if it ain't one thing......

it's another, I tell ya........if you want to read about the milk/dairy product scare, poisoned with melamine (sp?) check out here:

http://www.chinapost.com.tw/taiwan/

and you'll see a number of articles. I had JUST bought some products to make milk tea, now no one here in the house will drink it. Though they are now saying that it will ONLY cause kidney stones IF you drink large quantities of products tainted with the stuff. Funny, the head of Dept. of Health refused to have a drink of coffee with creamer in it at a meeting............that's a bit scary!!

AND the news here said that another fatal case of the enterovirus 71 happened this week, it was of a 4yr old. Now, this makes no sense..... the child was sick, didn't go to school that day, but wanted to go to the activity the school had. So, his parents took him, sick and all, to the activity, which he got on the stage and all and then had breathing problems, blood pressure went up and they called 911......he died the next day....................why if the child was sick would they take him in public and now possibly infect the other kids around them??? that is what gets me.........I told dh (who is still in China) and he said "DON'T go out anywhere!!" like I am taking all these kids out by myself!!LOL!!

Dh gets back tomorrow thank the Lord! We had a typhoon come through this week, thought my screens all got blown off.......goodness and we weren't even IN the storm...........it will be good to have daddy home.

Question for my 3 readers out there:-)........spelling........do you make your kids write the new words? or just have them do exercises and then say an oral test or what?

I know I never comment, but I am here reading :D.
Sorry to hear about all the illness and the storm. I hope you and your little ones stay safe.
I make my kids write their spelling words every day for a week. They are slow learners when it comes to spelling though. It wouldn't have taken that much for me when I was a kid.

I currently have my kids do detection on 12 verses from Proverbs everyday for spelling. I have them read first then I detect. Of course Alison will have more than 10 misspelled words. I just have them write 3 times for each misspelled word.

I pray for continued safety for you and your husband. And for God's grace to cover over you all!

I have already been commissioned for one painting, with 50% going to Morning Light- so I'll soon have $110 coming your way! Hopefully more to come before the end of October.

Regarding spelling. Our 3rd grader is the only one doing spelling right now and I have him do things like alphabetical order, write the words 3x, write sentences using each word. then we take a pre-test mid week and the words he gets wrong we immediately write two times properly. More excercises the following day, and then test on Friday. Words not correct on Friday carry over to the following week for continued practice. So, we keep working on it until it is stuck in his mind. He has a hard time with spelling, though. Some kids may not need as much practice but I can tell when we haven't done enough.

We pretest out loud...and then she writes any she spelled wrong...then we orally test again the wrong words 2 days later, and then Friday she writes them all.
She's more verbal and doesn't like writing, so we only write what she gets wrong to help her visualize the right way adn she spells them outloud as she writes them.
Then we write them at the end of the week to have a record of work done :)

Sep. 26, 2008 - spelling words

Deana,
I am glad to hear DH will be home tomorrow!
In regards to spelling tests- our kids have marker boards and practice writing their words in different colors several times each. Last week I took all 17 kiddos outside with sidewalk chalk and let them write their spelling words on the sidewalk. It was very nice day for this.
This week we actually used shaving cream. I sprayed a small amt of shaving cream on their desk and then the kids were allowed to use one hand only and write their spelling words in the shaving cream. Bit messy- but the kids loved it. :) I also have them write short stories using some or all of their spelling words. You could also use small flat or low cut cardboard box and sand and let him trace his words in the sand vs shaving cream. My third graders take a pre-test on Wed and retakes on Friday if they do not make 100. We have 15 words and 2 challenge words. Our kids are also learning to write in cursive. So I also let them "practice" writing their spelling words in cursive as well. Have a great day!
Laura/KS who is really enjoying student teaching. :)
