Homeschooling from the Heart
My Dad and Me

For God so loved the world that He gave His

I am actually excited about next year! (Here's my plan)

I love the freedom I feel to go with the creation science with my (15 year old) son, rather than the typical biology, chemistry, physical science, etc.  This is what we're doing for science:  From Answers in Genesis we are doing The Answers Book, and will be using their free, on-line study guide.  We are also doing The Exploring Series available at AiG.    For history, I am purchasing Ruth Beechick's World History Made Simple which we will begin with, and then onto Mystery of History.  I believe these science and history materials will take us through the next two years.  We will continue with Algebra 1 from Teaching Textbooks for math, but I also purchased Mastering Essential Math Skills to review the basics.  For more help in the basics (of all subjects) we are getting Learn This!, 500 Keywords for the SAT and 100 Math Tips for the SAT.

For the younsters (2nd and 3rd, but in reality more like 3rd and 4th) we are doing God's Design for Life for science.  I do not believe ANY formal science needs to be done with this age, and nature hikes, library books, etc. are fine.  However, I am hard pressed to find creation library books!  Amazingly, I found a creation dinosaur book at the salvation army once.  Science AND history are those subjects that I really do like to take advantage of the great materials coming out from a few good resources.  Looking over the sample pages of God's Design for Life tells me that my curious, inquisitive children are going to enjoy this.  For all of the other subject, I will be using materials I already own -- Miquin Math, Addison Wesley Math, a multi-age level geography book that is now out of print, another out of print math book that I can't remember the name of right now.  Oh, yeah -- also we are purchasing The Natural Speller (as a resource), Draw-Write-Now and Handwriting Without Tears.

All of this will be Beechickized (keeping her methods at the heart of how I implement it).  All I listed above are materials.  What goes on in our home, how we learn is a whole 'nuther thing.  It's OK to use materials younger than your child's age.  I am pretty much doing that for my 15 year old son.  I'll post on this separate.  It isn't because he's a dummy.  He's a smart kid.  But he does not love reading.  Oddly, he's way up there in his language skills whenever he takes the standardized test.  But something really big wordish is a bore to him, and I need to keep him interested.  I read a book on WWII, specifically about Hitler, that was on about an eighth grade level, once.  I was an adult at the time.  I got more out of that than most books on an adult level ever gave me. Well, I'll say more on that another time.  I'll just finish by saying, some adult books in the adult section of the library -- biographies, etc., have way more information than anyone would ever want to read.  Sometimes we need the over view that a lower grade book would give us.

Isn't great to feel the excitment of teaching your children in a way that pleases and serves the Lord! I get goosebumps each time we do a English lesson using the Bible or everytime my son chooses to draw a picture of the Bible story we learned that day for his art. It is how it should be. We are so blessed to be able to teach our kids in his light! :)

Your excitement for schooling is encouraging to me! Thanks so much for your post! I also have Mystery of History. Have you thought about doing it with all your children as a unit study..? I believe that's what I will do.. my daughter will be in the 8th grade and son in the 3rd grade.

Jun. 22, 2006 - Prayers Please

Had a phone call frrom my sister earlier this evening - seems that my Mum was taken into hospital this morning. They say that she has had a mild heart-attack. Not a lot else I can tell you at the moment........also not much that I can do, as I'm seeing the neurosurgeon in the morning myself! My parents live quite a distance from us (about a two hour journey), so it's not easy to just get up and go over there. My sis is going to keep me updated and I've warned her not to tell Mum that I'm seeing the doctor in the morning - don't want to add to her worries! I've got a number for my Mum's phone at the hospital, so I'll ring her later tomorrow when everything at this end is done and dusted. Off to bed now before I fall asleep at the desk!

Well, it looks like you have it all planned out and ready to go...ok, thanks for the inspiration. After what happened to my van (see my blog) I will have plenty of time to stay home next week and work on my plans for next year! See, God always knows how to make us do what we are supposed to be doing!

You really sound like you have it all together. I am kind of stumbling around for the right fit still. I am using a variety of materials and have no real curric. purchased. We are doing a wicked weather unit right now for science. We are learning alot and doing alot of experiments. We are using the Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness Books we love those. Lots of pics and factoids. Good luck with the new year.

Jul. 25, 2006 - Very Inspiring

Posted by 1xxand2xy4me

I am new to the HS world, this will be my first year, and I have found your blog(s) so helpful and inspiring. I don't know much about Ruth Beechick but I am very interested in learning more. Do you know where I could read an excerpt from one of her books? Thanks for your insight to HS and life. I will keep reading your blogs.
Oh, do you mind if I add you to my friends list?
In Christ's Love,
Anne
