The other day I read an archived email on one of my lists about these wonderful art videos by Jan Brett.Well I downloaded one to try out later.
So tonight at about midnight (yes really) I got that infamous wild hair (or hare?) to have a go at her lesson. I truly didn't think I was going to do very well at all, and didn't think I'd even bother to complete the lesson. I just grabbed some sketch paper, mechanical pencil, stick eraser, water color pencils, water brush and 2 & 3 tipped Micron pens. I turned on the video and followed along.
Well, who knew about 20 minutes later I'd be MAD at myself for not having grabbed the WATERCOLOR PAPER!! (that stuff is sorta expensive so I didn't want to "waste it" on a try-out practice run... sigh)
I am rather please with the results. It certainly isn't a masterpiece, but not too shabby for a first go'round.
Five things I like about it:
-
The ears
-
The whiskers
-
The shadow
-
The inked fur outline
-
The light reflection in the eye
Things that need improvement:
-
length of the body-- too long
-
shoulder-- too abruptly rounded
-
fur along "eyebrow" area is inked a bit heavily/too exact
-
the muzzle--just looks odd, but I thought Jan Brett's was odd too, just don't like the shape.
Anyway, I've cut out the bunny from the sketch pad. I'll save the little guy, even though he's on buckled paper. I truly didn't think I'd complete this lesson or I would have used watercolor paper to begin with! Oh well. Good practice for following directions, nonetheless!
I challenge you to try out her bunny lesson, even if just using pencil! If you do, please be sure to let me know! I'd love to see it!
