Gardening up close

While the kiddos were out playing soccer after dinner I inspected my garden and container plants, watered, and hosed the patio. Here are some photos I took this evening...

Broccoli peeking out

Cukes growing tall

DD's flowers (anyone recall what these are ??  I can't remember their name.)

A row of lettuce in a container

a peek at some of the cherry tomatoes coming in.

Shimmery view of the "pinks" tomato flowers

Basket of flowers on the pole with the hummingbird feeder

Healthy strawberry plants (see the flower buds at the top left?)

Also a strawberry plant, but looks unhealthy, don't you think? What's that odd coloring on the stems and leaves? It *is* putting out runners (need to read up if I'm suppose to pinch those off or just guide them to where I want it to go) and flowering, though. I do have to spray off (with fast water) what I believe are black aphids (??) each day. I really don't want to use an insecticide, and have read the homemade soap sprays can be harmful. Any ideas/suggestions? (please leave me a comment!)

Well the sun is almost down here, DD just got out of the shwer and is having her snack. DS is playing his computer game and I'm listening (in the background) to a repeat episode of "Deadliest Catch" (which I really find fascinating and horribly dangerous work!) I hope everyone had a great Monday! I think I'll attempt the granny square again tonight.

hey there! garden looks great! I think those little pansy looking flowers are called johnny-jump-ups. For your strawberries - ladybugs eat aphids. Try relocating ladybugs your dd finds to the strawberry plants, or buy ladybugs. I love all your containers, everything looks so healthy! :-)

Yup, those are johnny jump ups. It looks like a weed coming up out of your strawberries. Is that tall part attatched? Your lettuce looks beautiful! I have slugs in my garden eating holes in everything. UGH! Ok, I am looking in my organic gardening book and it says to grow nasturtiums around your strawberries. Also, don't let your stawberries dry out. Keep them watered. Fertilize, fertilize, and water some more. Paint a small pan yellow and fill it with water. Add some detergent and you have yourself a trap. The book is called The Organice Way to Plant Protection. It has come in very handy for me.

Oh, the runners on the strawberries, I just guide them where I want them to go. But, I think that once they start sending out runners, they aren't going to produce fruit. But that's only an I think. This is my second year with strawberries. Last year we got 3 fruit maybe but this year we got a ton.
