We don't have any pets...

There. I said it. Yes, right now we don't have any pets. Not really. We do have three silk worms that have been in cocoons for a couple months now. (I imagine they'll emerge next spring, but that certainly isn't what the pamphlet said! It said they wouldn't take very long at all!LOL)

Oh, and we are currently awaiting our order of tadpoles. My dad bought DD a "frog kit" during his little visit here with us on his way home from Iraq. She's very excited and eager about  them arriving.

We've had pet snails in the past (when we lived in San Diego) and they made MARVELOUS pets! Super easy to care for and not too messy. (Exactly MY kind of pet. LOL)

Having no pets is mainly the reason I signed us up for this week's field trip to Petco with our field trip group. The sign-ups said "Higher level thinking related to animal science and animal care will be introduced on this field trip. While interacting with different animals, students discover interesting details and facts about the animals' traits, behaviors, and habitats. The trip also covers the basic needs animals and humans share and will help increase students' respect for all animals. Responsibility lessons taught on this field trip impact students not only at home with their pets, but also in their global environment."

This was for grades 3-8. Our field trip group had SUCH a big response to the outing, though, that the leader split up the group into two age levels and had two separate groups. We attended with the older group.

Here are some photos from that day (9/13/07)

This was a nice little start to our field trip season. (We had a family barbeque last week with most of the families in the group.) Of course, it left DD wanting "a pet" (I think she'd be happy with most anything, but specifically asked for a lizard of some sort.) That's all fine and dandy but 1) we move a lot and travel out of state on a regular basis, so that needs to be considered,  2) no pet I've seen takes care of itself , and 3) she hasn't convinced us yet.

I know our field trip group leader said she picked this field trip because it came up as a "free trip" at the Field Trip Factory. (Our group tries to rotate free trips with ones that cost something so everyone has something they can afford to attend. I think that is a GREAT idea!)
