Weighing in on the economy...

So on one of my email loops I brought up the topic of the skyrocketing gas prices. Instead of rethinking it all to post here, I'll just edit it and repost here...

These crazy gas prices! We buy gas on base and even it is skyrocketing. It's put a real damper on those things that I'd otherwise have done/attended/participated in. Like tomorrow, we had a HS day at a ceramics place to go to ... but, because it is about 30 minutes away, I've decided to forego the outing-- because it would be a round trip to GO and paint the piece, plus the cost of the actual piece (though I could have just given DD a $$ amount to stay under) plus another round trip a week later to pick up the finished (fired) piece. Gas just rules that out. Kiddo has a month of track starting on Thursday which we've already signed up/paid for and both DH and I think it is a great opportunity for her that we've decided to suck up the gas expenditure and take part in this homeschool track program (offered in May only) which meets 2x a week.  The meeting place is about 20 minutes from home. Heck, I've already prepaid for a field trip to a factory (in downtown Chicago) but I'm strongly considering not going and just forfeiting that money (only $6.00) because it would be at LEAST 45 -60 minutes getting there in traffic and most certainly more coming home, due to the time of day--- all that time sitting in traffic just sucking down gas. *sigh*

So, has gas changed ya'lls outings yet? If not, how are you dealing with the higher gas costs? Ya know, come to think of it-- if it were JUST gas prices raising, we could deal with that. But obviously everything is raising (string cheese is now $3.09!!!! when we moved here it was under $2.00! Needless to say, I don't buy it now. Instead I buy a block of Colby-jack and slice it into pieces. Yes, DD loves cheese and eats a piece every day! She'd be happy with a piece at every meal...but I frown on that. LOL)

And now I read this article and feel "validated" in my thinking/observations. Funny, my online buddy was the first to inform me about the rice hoarding going on. So I mentioned that to a few homeschool moms a couple weeks ago when we were discussing gas prices. They looked at me like I was crazy! Now they might not think I'm quite so crazy.

I'm even reevaluating if I *NEED* the items that I was going to purchase through the food co-op, or if I ought to change some of those items to other things that the prices have already been going up, to try to stock up more on those. This is all driving me nuts, I tell you. We were already on a pretty tight budget due to the HUGE pay cut we saw moving off of sea duty in Hawaii to shore duty in Illinois. Money isn't very stretchy nowadays either. LOL  This one-income,  homeschooling family definitely has some purse strings to tighten. Pretty soon, I think, that so-called purse is going to be inside out from so much tightening though! Ugh. I even sold a few books via email lists here lately. Something I said I didn't see me doing again anytime soon, due to the headache. Well, having even a tiny bit of extra cash flow far outweighed the potential headache. Now to just sit and wait for those money orders to arrive!

So, readers... weigh in. Has the rising gas prices (and even food costs) played into your homeschooling yet? If so, how? And, how are you coping?

I don't know if I'm coping well or not. We went to grocery shopping last night, and what I thought might be around $100 (I wasn't adding in my head, just a mental picture of what I thought the things would add up to) was in actuality around $200! Ugh!!!

One way I'm trying to 'cope' is watching gas prices. Fortunately, for the past couple of increases that we've seen (like from 3.34 to 3.42), we were able to get it at the "lower" price at a gas station that hadn't changed their signs & prices yet. The next day, they *had* changed. (Does this make sense?)

Anyway, don't know if this answers your questions, but I thought I'd share anyway.

(p.s. I'm an Army Brat, and sometimes I really miss the somewhat "cheaper" gas, the commissary, and PX/BX no-tax items.)

Hmmm...How I'm coping

Posted by diabetesmommy
I currently live in NJ. Due to the current economy, my hubby has not worked a "full" week since before Christmas. "Full" meaning with overtime. He is in construction. Since we live in the Pine Barrens, most land around is "protected", so even after the economy picks up, our situation may not. I work outside of the home and add a little money, which normally goes to homeschooling activities/books. However, I carry all of the insurance.

In my area rent for a very small, dumpy, two bedroom is $1000/a month with absolutely no backyard and a bunch of local drugs. Our string cheese goes for $4.99 not on sale for a 16 oz. package. Gas is $3.45, but I drive a diesel car and my fuel is $4.22 a gallon. (It is illegal here to pump your own gas though, so I guess that is one plus.)

So, what all of this means for me is, we have decided to move away from my family to an area closer to his family, in West Virginia. Rent would be about $200 (inlaws own it), no gas bill since they own the gas rights. We would have 3 acres for a nice garden, (and a greenhouse), but in-laws have another 17 acres if there ever was a massive food shortage (but we WOULD all be able to drive with our "corn cars").

So, the plan currently is for hubby to go down within the next few months, while I continue to keep the insurance. Then, after he is settled in a job, we will follow.

Scary, scary stuff (for me, since I've lived here practically all of my life).

All in all, I can't stand the plan. However, I see the writing on the wall.

Our gas prices here are fairly high but we get most of our gas in a neighboring state where it is cheaper so that's how we save that way. With food prices, we haven't really seen too much of high prices here yet. We are starting to get a food storage together in case we need it but nothing major yet.
It hasn't really cut back on what we do but we run less errands and make sure when we are out that we do everything we need to and make only one trip to the grocery store instead of 4.

There aren't a lot of perks to the military life, but sea pay is definitely one of them. 8) We're both former Navy, but now Hubby's a pastor of a small church (very tight budget). I've started being very picky about leaving the car running while one of us runs in somewhere, fewer trips, etc. Our biggest gas problem is that the nearest decent library is 30 minutes away, and we can only check out 15 things at a time. With 4 voracious readers in the house, that makes it pretty tricky. As for groceries, I'm still in denial. Hopefully my habits will catch up to our budget soon! Thank the Lord I like to garden!

I really enjoy your blog,

More Awareness

Here in California the "cheap" gas is going for around $3.87 a gallon. We have been paying over $3.50 for about a year now so when it soared up to just about $4 a few weeks ago it was ugly. It came back down again and I plan my gas so I can be at Costco to get the cheaper price.

Food is just incredibly expensive. I live in the fruit basket of the country and I'm paying $4 for strawberries.....or I would if I purchased them. I did pick some up for $2.50 the other day but the basket was skimpy and the bottom layer was mushy. All that to say, we are paying more for less and getting poorer quality. Where is the good stuff going?

We went from a two earner to one earner six years ago and we had to really change our lifestyle. We need a new car but I do not want a car payment so we make due with our 10 year old car that is paid off.

The one thing that has really impacted us in our area is the price of our utilities....propane gas and electricity and water and garbage. I won't even tell you how much we pay, it is insane and we are the most conservative family I know. Here again we are paying more and getting less. We have cut our propane use by almost 30 percent but we are paying double what we paid a year ago...does that make sense? The garbage company changed their rules and we can only have a 33 gallon can instead of a 50 gallon can but we pay the same price. Go figure. The local water company had to build a new sewage treatment plant so our price for water and then the sewer has gone from around $75 per month to almost $200 a month in the last three years. We can't afford to flush the toilets anymore....just about anyway. :)

You asked, that is how it is in California right now. Hubby has a state govt job working for the forestry department so we are pretty much stuck in this state for now. We could move out of town, have our own septic system, a well, solar panels, a bigger garden, and anything else that would reduce our costs but the gas prices to drive to and fro would kill us. For now we are just sucking up and eating the most plain and simple meals we can, driving less, and turning off electrical items and reducing our yard watering.

This is a sore topic around here, if you couldn't tell.

Hey! Looks like you've got ALOT going on, lady! Gunea pigs, soccer, and volleyball? Oh, my!

Have the gas prices and other shortages affected us in our homeschooling? Yes and no. I think the prices have forced conversations like this one, which, in essence is, what do I really need to do? I've been thinking. You know what's amazing? The best academic programs in the nation advertise a small teacher to student ratio, progressing at the student's own pace, environments that enhance learning with lots of encouragement and support. What is that but an imitation of a homeschool? Then, what do we do? Take our kids out of that environment and take them all over the place in the name of networking, socialization, teamsmanship and group fun. So, have the prices slowed us down? No, we've probably focused in more on what makes our environment unique and fun.

We've also enjoyed certain blessings, one of them being my husband's company car, so any "extra" runs I've made have been balanced by using his car.
One thing I tried this year after speaking with a homeschool friend was to pack our books and get out of the house more. After 2 such outings, I learned that our kids really enjoy being at home in their bathrobes (unless we have to go somewhere), grabbing a snack when they want, and knowing that the bathroom is clean. Who's to say that all this gadding about is a good thing, anyway?

Yes, raising gas and food prices have cut into our homeschool budget in the extra-curricular areas. Like activities. We have cut back on activities that are far away, or are somewhat costly. And enrichment classes too. Those are a luxury nowadays. Great post. Blessings!
