A March Tradition • Mar. 17, 2008

We have this goofy March tradition in our family that goes way back to my childhood, when my oldest brother would take me to get Shamrock Shakes from McDonald's.  My kids love this, and we have trekked from one franchise to the next when they have run out.

Recently we were laughing about a Shamrock Shake run that happened two years ago...

Of course, you can make them at home.  We've done that, too.  Saves a lot of cash and they (dare I say it?) taste better:

  • 2 cups vanilla ice cream
  • 1 1/4 cups milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon mint extract
  • 8 drops green food coloring

  • Add some Andes mints... oh my... somebody stop me!  I have to deliver this baby in eight weeks!

but sadly, they do not sell Shamrock Shakes in the south! (yea, I heard you gasp. I can't believe it either).

The funny thing is, in Feb. we drove from Grand Rapids MI to Harrisburg, PA in one day to pick up my dh from the airport and his plane was delayed by 2 hours. So, (since we hadn't eaten because dinner was waiting for us at my in-laws in Lancaster) we decided to get a bite at the airport and the only place still open was McDonalds and what do you know, they had Shamrock Shakes! I think we were more excited over that, then seeing the plane land.

funny. and fun memories. nice to know it's coastless (meaning, not for just one coast).

Think I'll have to give these a try for our afternoon slump (do the Irish have a tea um...coffee time?). Thanks!

We just made this with one variation. I try to avoid food coloring so I blended in a couple of handfuls of spinach with the milk first to get a lovely minty color. Once you add the ice cream and mint oil you would never know the sneaky ingredient:)

I think the rule is that if you blend up the Andes mints to put in the shake, all the calories are released into the air. Really. Then it's safe to eat them. =)

We've never done anything special for St. Patrick's Day, so my kids were pleasantly surprised when I served shamrock shakes for dessert tonight. I couldn't believe I had all the ingredients on hand! I almost had them believing they really had shamrocks in them.

    St. Patricks Day? - Mar. 17, 2008

I had no idea it was St. Patty's day, until I read your blog. I looked up some info on St. Patrick, (who wasn't actually Irish - weird) and made a quick impromptu lesson on this great man.

Now Sven is on his way to get us some shakes! How fun thanks!

Since we don't frequent McDonalds I might have to make a few of these shakes this weekend.
    Thanks for posting the recipe.

Shakes not sold here... - Mar. 18, 2008

Funny story. My husband went out to get shakes, and they don't make them at our local Mikey D's. So we were all sad, for like a milla second cause we still got shakes for no reason. So all in all, a successful trip. :-)

Hi Kenj-We had no mint extract so I looked recipies up in the essential oil book and found that yes-we can eat some of them! I made a vita mix full of them with just 2 drops of peppermint essential oil. Next I am goint to use cookies n'cream ice cream to copy Jack in the box Oreo mint shake.
    I love your food posts!
