Sometimes they surprise you!!
|
My oldest dd struggles with many academic activities. She didn't really learn to read until she was almost 9. Spelling comes hard to her although she is learning. MAth is another tough area and some days she ends up in tears over what seems like it should be simple and for her it isn't.
So I was rather surprised when, after finding out that Jeannie Fulbright's science series Exploring Creation through... was available on the topic of plants, she asked for a copy of the book to read and study on her own time. I rather quickly went to CBD and ordered a copy for her and it arrived today. She has already read the first 3 pages and then asked me if she could narrate to me so she can make a notebook with narrations and projects related to botany. Mind you this is not something I am requiring of her. The science we are doing right now is Exploring Creation Through Astronomy and we are doing projects and narrations along with reading through each chapter. But she loves science and she loves plants; most particularly herbs. She already has plans for an herb garden this summer and we have several different seeds, some of which she is starting indoors.
I am greatly encouraged at her love of learning. I have not killed it, even though I don't do everything right. Some things are getting in there. God is faithful and I see it once again.

This is so great! I love it when they take on a study all on their own. It is so much fun to see their God-given interests shine through.
I didn't know that the Bradleys have a newsletter - is it regular mail or an e-newsletter that you get? I think I will have to sign up! ( :
Yes - it was me who invited you to be on my buddy list. I don't know why it is not showing up - I will go check to see if I need to do something now too. Have you got lots of great books through paperback now? Boy - I have! ( :
Warmly,
Mandi

Great news, Jennifer! Remember that the brilliant Einstein did not even speak until he was 4 years old and also did not learn to read for several years after beginning school. I have been told he was more of a Science guy than a reader, too:) Just something to remember...:)

Isn't it lovely when their interest is sparked and they take a step on their own? I love that! It shows that despite mistakes we make as teachers/parents that God sees when we need the boost to fuel us. I am back to blogging more often. I have missed it so.

a big part of A Thomas Jefferson Education (by Oliver DeMille) is letting your children have space to study what excites them, for if they love learning, they can learn anything. And our role as parent, is to inspire our children to learn, and get them what they need. Sounds like your DD got what she needed. :o)
