Unconventionally Yours...

Dancing Goth Mom...

Yesterday, Christopher took me shopping.   I got some great gifts, too.  Albeit, some of it may be considered strange by my homeschooling, Jesus-loving, conservative friends, and my kids, too.  My kids...we had some interesting conversation, yesterday.

You see, we went to the mall.  In the mall, we made our usual first stop at Gamestop.  Ironically, *I* spent the most money.  This was a first.  I was standing there, looking somewhat longingly at the Dance Pads and Dance-Dance Revolution games.  My darling man gets so happy when I want *anything* in Gamestop.  Next thing you know, I was walking out with the best dance pad and a cool new dance game.  My kids thought I was nuts.

I wasn't done, yet.

Next door is that creepy, but oh-so-interesting goth store. This place is endearing to me, because I bought my wedding dress there about 5 years ago.  For the record, it was white - not black.

So, there's me, Christopher, and 3 kids (including one in a stroller) walking through Hot Topic.  My kids are okay with that part.  Then I went to the dressing room.  I wish I had a camera for when I came *out* of the dressing room.  My husband's eyes twinkled knowingly, as my kids stood there with their mouths gaping open.  Goth Mom at last.   Christopher knows I have a goth trapped in my body, but the kids were shocked to see me in a long black skirt with buckles and laces and a sleeveless black shirt.    I loved it, especially the skirt.   We bought my new clothes and headed out.

Here's where the conversation comes in, and I wish I actually had some readers, so I could hear YOUR opinions...but all is well anyway.

On the way home Jordan explained that he didn't like the "all-black" thing because it doesn't look "Christian."

That's a big observation from a 7 year old.    We talked to Jordan about judging a book by it's cover, and getting so wrapped up in appearance and what others may think.   We talked about how we're suppose to avoid appearance of evil, but how we need not get ourselves into religious bondage.  It was really a great conversation.  I want my kids to know that it's okay to serve God and still enjoy life, so long as it's not SIN and their hearts are right.

So, all in all, it was fun!  And, I've been dancing the morning away already...  What a great workout.

I like the way you said that...

"We talked about how we're suppose to avoid appearance of evil, but how we need not get ourselves into religious bondage."

Thanks for that thought. Very timely for me.

Hi! I stumbled upon your blog. I'm random blogging tonight. Anyway, I agree with you and your conversation with your 7 year old. Yep, avoid the appearance of evil but that doesn't mean you have to be a cookie cutter Christian. Or that your outside has to be a certain way. It is your heart and the fruit in your life that counts.

Anyway, I wanted to say hello and I enjoyed your blog tonight :)

You go, girl!

Hey, more power to you!

I'm an old Christian rocker, and I've been listening to goth and industrial (in addition to my usual dose of metal, grindcore, punk, etc.) for nearly 10 years, so I'm glad to hear that you got yourself some gear. And black's a perfectly fine color for Christians to wear (even homeschoolers!).

We're in our 12th year of homeschooling, and we love all that wonderful goth/industrial stuff. Not that our homeschooling compatriots understand us, either (if we did the all-black thing, they'd be rather shocked). So we dabble.

Keep up the good work!

Peace,

Jeff
