Little Pieces of Heaven

Posted in Family

A couple of years ago I took the kids to a candy factory right about the time that the new Willy Wonka movie came out.  It was a really neat field trip.

Not only did we get the chance to see the factory in action but they also took us into a room and showed a movie all about chocolate.  This stuff is chock full of goodness.  And according to the speaker there is hardly any caffiene.  It is really very healthy as long as it is dark chocolates you are eating.

The informational movie showed the history of how chocolate came to be.  We finished watching the movie and then they led us to a glass wall.  There we watched all the different concoctions being made.  It was wild to see the huge vats of chocolate.  There were giant pipes that carried the chocolate to all the different machienes.  When we were done there we were each given a lovely piece of chocolate to try.

Since then I am always looking for those little yummy pieces of heaven.

Our Trip To The Lake

Posted in Family

I realized that I hadn't shared anything about our trip to the lake.  Some friends from church offered us the use of their lake house.  This was such a generous offer.  And so we took it.

It was just one of those laid back weekends.  It consisted mostly of eating, sleeping, fishing, and swimming.  But it was exactly what we needed.  The last couple of vacations that we have took have not been the relaxing type.  This one was just that.

There was nowhere to go and no rush to do anything.  We really enjoyed ourselves.  The only complaint was that it just wasn't long enough

Here is the house we stayed in.

Lots of just hanging out together.

Are You Aware?

Posted in Family

I am fully aware that there is no shortage of predators in this world.  It is sick to think that there really are some who would want to harm children.  Sometimes I think that we as homeschoolers have a false sense of security simply because we have the ability to keep better track of our kids throughout the day.  However sometimes we may be unaware of the convicted offenders who live very near to us.  So, I do regularly check the Sex Offender Registry.  I am very thankful for Megans Law which make this registry possible.  You may be a bit surprised to know who is living near you and your kids.

The Toaster Oven's Appeal?

Posted in Family

When Rich and I were dating I noticed something different about his family.  Every one of the women have a toaster over proudly displayed on their kitchen counters.

This may not seem all that strange to you.  But I'd never seen one before and had no idea what they were even used for.  I think I grew up on an island or something.  So anyways , when we got married his aunts had to make sure that I was an official member of the family.  You guessed it, they got me my very own chrome toaster oven

I was very young and very much domestically challenged.  So after cooking a couple of bagels in the thing, I decided that my regular toaster was good enough for me. And besides there wasn't anything complicated like temperture setting to deal with.  Besides in those early days I didn't do much at all in the way of cooking.  We were the fast food family!

So here is my question for you.  What are the benefits of the toaster oven?  What kinds of things can you cook in it.  What is your favorite recipes?  IBeing the more mature woman that I am today, I would really like to understand the toaster oven and its appeal to many.

Richie Was Attacked By.....A Cougar!?!?

Posted in Family

Today was the unofficial start of volleyball season.  A bunch of girls from JV and Varsity got together to play volleyball at a park.  It sounded like a chance for the girls to just get together and hang out.  But I knew better.  This was really a chance for the coaches to evaluate the girls before the real tryouts begin.

Kalene had a good time.  She'll be trying out for Varsity this year and she was a little nervous moving up from JV.  But she quickly made friends with the other girls on the Varsity team.  So today was really just a preseason practice and get to know the coaches.

Since the park was quite a hike from our house, Richie and I stayed.  I read a book and he climbed trees and practiced with his weapons.  I think I have mentioned his obsession with weapons before.  When I noticed that there was a creek, I got Richie and we went to explore it.

The first order of business was to find a way to cross this creek.  He could have just taken off his socks and shoes and walked across the little trickle.  But that is not nearly as adventurous as gathering up a bunch of sticks to make a dam and walk across the sticks.

This is all due to the fact that grama allowed him to cross the Escanaba River last year.  Now he just has to cross any moving water he sees.  Let me just add here that this was barely even a creek in some spots.  The Escanaba River however is really a river.  A fast moving river that could have carried him away.

Grama, for the record you are still officially way cooler than I am now.  Allowing Richie to cross rivers and Kalene to drive definately puts you in the top spot ;-)

Oh, I want to add one more thing.  While Richie was playing in the creek barefoot a lady came by walking her black lab.  Richie didn't see it coming towards him.  When he did he freaked out and tried to run up the bank to get away from it.  The dog just wanted to play with him, it was alright.

The funny part is the Richie told me later that he thought it was a cougar at first.

Chicago Day #1

Posted in Family

We came back home on Sunday night.  It was a wonderful trip.  I am so in love with Chicago now.  It's an exciting place to be.  We had all kinds of plans, but we didn't get to them all and we didn't feel like we missed out at all.  It would have been neat to "meet" up with you Jen.  Maybe next time.  Because we are already trying to figure out how and when we can go back.

We came into the city late Thursday night on our way to our hotel and I was speechless.  I grew up in Detroit and still live very near to it.  But it is dwarfed by Chicago.  My 87 year old neighbor told us before we left that Chicago is today what Detroit used to be.  I find that very sad.  I know that there are efforts to bring it back to its former glory.  I hope that it succeeds.

The first day that we were there Rich went to see the Navy Graduation while me and the kids hung out at the hotel and had breakfast and watched a movie.  Richie and I thoroughly explored the huge hotel trying hard to get lost.  Once everyone came back from the graduation we went to dinner.

Then Rich and I took the kids into the city to visit the Navy Pier.  Here are some pictures from our fisrt visit to the city.

We saw an amazing show of actors, musicians, and trapeze artists that were hoisted up 200ft in the air by a huge crane.  They became a human carousel and played the most enchanting music.  It was mesmerizing.

We didn't get back to our hotel until 2 AM.  So we went straight to sleep.

Skate Shoes

Posted in Family

My daughter has a very unique sense of style which is something I absolutely love about her.  She does not care what the majority of the group is wearing.  She wears what she thinks is cool.  And I think that is the coolest thing ever.

One thing which she loves are skate shoes.   Especially Vans skate shoes. She has always leaned towards the skater style quite a bit.   She has passed a little bit of this same sense of style on to her brother now.  He bought himself his own pair of Vans skate shoes this passed year with his own money.  I thought it was kind of cute.  It was such a grown up thing to do.  He used to spend his money on candy now he is buying shoes?  I guess that is what happens when you have an older sister with a passion for clothes and shoes.

Buyskateshoes.com has all the coolest skate shoes, including Vans.  They even carries clothes.  So Kalene should be happy with this one all around.  Shoes and clothes - that a dream come true.
