Growing up as I did in central Texas, I didn't see a lot of snow. When it snowed in Austin, it shut down the whole town for as long as it took to melt the white stuff. I am, therefore, a bit childish about snow when it snows here. I dance around in delight and announce, "It's snowing, it's snowing!" to the girls. I used to call my mom and tell her that it was snowing and she'd always reply, "Better you than me!" We had a big old snow Sunday morning. Well, big for this winter, when we've gotten nothing but rain. I went to bed about 11 on Saturday and there was nothing going on. To be honest, I figured the weathermen had messed up again and there wouldn't be any snow. I was quite surprised to look outside when we got up Sunday morning and see the ground and everything else covered with snow. Instead of my usual, "It's snowing!" I said, "Uh oh. It snowed...better get up, we'll have to leave earlier than usual." When I was growing up, we had to go to the snow. My stepfather and mother usually went skiing at least once a season and on occasion we also went. It was great fun to see the white banks of snow all around, to get out of the car and dive into it, to make snowballs and snowmen. That was a lot more fun to me than the skiing was. Probably because I really wasn't much good at it. I remember taking ski lessons (so that Jerry and Mom could ski and make sure we didn't kill ourselves or anyone else in the process). My brother and I were lousy skiers and the instructor could be heard to complain about us in the lodge après ski. My favorite part was riding up on the ski lift to the top of the mountain. It was frightening to be that high up but it was so peaceful and beautiful there, looking down on the snow-covered mountain, the sugared-looking trees. Skiing down was in the future, as were the sore muscles and sunburn, but the present was blissful and quiet. It was a lovely time. I can't see that I'll ever ski again and I don't plan to take the children skiing either. It's just too much money for the experience. Nowadays we get a similar experience from hiking in the woods after a snowfall. If we go on Monday, the experience is free. If we go during the week, it's less than $10 for the six of us. But of the memories I have of childhood, it is one of the more pleasant and occasionally it's good to remember that. |
