MindTrap #9 + exercise challenge

Posted in Mindtrap Monday

An easy one today, since I am SO behind from being gone Thursday-Saturday. I even had a faithful blogger friend post my Show and Tell, but apparently it didn't work. Oh, well. I should have my Costa Rica S&T ready for THIS Friday. It's the Spring Rush and I'm clambering to catch up on everything!
OK...on with the MindTrap for today.

In Hawaii, if you drop a steel ball weighing five pounds from a height of 45 inches, will it fall more rapidly through water at 20 degrees Fahrenheit or water at 40 degrees Fahrenheit? Or will it make no difference? (This is a good one to ask your kids).

OK, I didn't know I was supposed to officially "Check In" every Monday morning with the Mr. Linky here:
EXERCISE CHALLENGE.
But now I know, so here goes...
This week was just an OK on my exercise "meter." I was faithful Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday, and even Sunday (since I missed Th and Fri). I was out of town--east of the mts.--being the Keynote speaker (gee, that sounds cool, doesn't it?) at a young authors conference for a little school in the Methow Valley. We did walk down to the river Th and F so I'll count that as a 1/2 mile each of those days. We couldn't walk all the way on Sat. am because the rivers are flooding so fast because of the record-breaking temperatures on both sides of the mts. combined with record snowfall in the mts! Yikes!

The other days I faithfully donned my 5# weighted vest and did my treadmill for 2 miles. Haven't lost anything yet, but I sure can "feel" it when I have that vest on. My goal---going 2 miles with 10# vest by the end of the summer.

I've been doing this for 8 weeks? Doesn't seem like that long. I hope for the summer to go back to my Book Review Mondays for summer reading options. But for now I'll toss out a few more of these delights for the crazy people who like to think harder than they should. LOL

Sid Shady is in prison and is planning his escape. The cell he is in measures three meters by three meters by three meters. The walls are made of reinforced concrete and they extend two meters below the dirt floor. The only openings in the cell are a locked door and a skylight one metter in diameter. Sid thinks he has found a way to escape so he begins by digging a tunnel. He knows that he can't tunnel himself out, but digging a tunnel is crucial to his plans. How does he plan to escape?

Are you ready for this? It's a little tricky, but it CAN be figured out.

Clem and Joe work in a coal mine. At the end of the day, Clem and Joe come out of the mine and bid each other farewell for the night. Clem's face is dirty and Joe's face is clean. As Clem and Joe set out for home, Joe wipes his face and Clem doesn't bother. Since both men appreciate cleanliness, whey doesn't Clem clean his face?

Have fun!

OK...this one is offered with no pictures, because if I post a picture it will give the answer away. Ready? It's a riddle:

Four men sat down to play,
They played all night 'til break of day.
They played for gold and not for fun
With separate scores for everyone.
When they came to square accounts,
They all had made quite fair amounts.
Can you the paradox explain,
If no one lost, how could all gain?

I'm no good at riddles; but if anyone has hobbit blood (as everyone knows, hobbits are renowned riddle lovers), they will probably be able to solve it. Check back on Wordless Wednesday for the answer.

MindTrap #5

This is bordering on the ridiculous. Last Monday my Firefox closed down 3 times; today, so far, once. But I shall save this to draft BEFORE it happens again! Anyway, only one problem today, as I'm off to a school visit and have to leave in a couple of hours!

Shadow had parked his car under a tree and was heading toward the suspect's house when a vicious dog lunged at him. Luckily for Shadow, he was just beyond the dog's reach. Since the suspect wasn't home, Shadow decided to leave, but he had a slight problem: the dog, straining at the end of his chain, was following Shadow's every move. With the chain attached to the tree, the dog had access to both car doors. How could Shadow get into his care without the dog being able to reach him?

Ready for another MindTrap morning? I'm about ready to give up, however. This is the THIRD time I've posted this. My Firefox has shut down the internet right in the middle of posting the pics--every time!

OK, I'll write fast this time...

Easy:
If you were to step into a sealed room filled with 100% methane gas and strike a match, what would happen?

Challenge:
Shadow was visiting on the Isle of Begule. This is an island where the natives always lie and the visitors always tell the truth. Shadow was walking through a mall when Bill, Frank, and Joe approached him. Joe said, "All of us are natives." Frank said, "Only one of us is a visitor." Who is the native and who is a visitor? Explain your reasoning (if you can!)

MindTrap Answers

Posted in Mindtrap Monday

Ooops! Sorry. In my excitement to post Val's site on Weblink Wednesday, I forgot to post the answers to MindTrap Monday. I'll get to that in a minute. For now, I must tell you that I am humiliated into the very dust! I waited and waited to become caller #1 to find out why my website had disappeared, after my hosting service said their moving to the new servers was a rousing success. Well....I learned that I had forgotten to....uh...well...renew my domain name and service! AUGH! What timing. What embarrassment. But luckily, an easy fix. Just whip out the ol' VISA and pay 'em.

OK, the answers to MindTrap Monday....

Easy: (real easy this time)
If an airplane carrying the U.S. swim team crashed directly on the border between the United States and Canada, in which country would the survivors be buried?

The survivors wouldn't be buried in either country.

Challenge:

A man and his son were rock climbing on a particularly dangerous mountain when they slipped and fell. The man was killed, but the son lived and was rushed to the hospital. The old surgeon looked at the young man and declared, "I can't operate on this boy: he is my son!" How could this be?

The doctor was the young man's mother.

Good job, those of you who got the answers!

MindTrap #3

Well, lots of time this morning to post this, catch comments I missed from last week, and visit a few folks. Why, you ask? Because I am now "Caller #4...waiting to speak with a representative...thank you for your patience..."  I want to know WHY my website is still DOWN, after they sent an e-mail message that says their fancy move to a new, upgraded something-or-other was a rousing success. Uh...I have news for them...my website is not there any longer. So I called them at least a half hour ago (I started the morning as Caller #32). Yep. I'm still holding. But it's an 800 number. So...perhaps by the time I get done posting this I'll be able to talk to a live person!

OK, for those of you who can't seem to start your week without your brain being challenged, here you go!

Easy: (real easy this time)
If an airplane carrying the U.S. swim team crashed directly on the border between the United States and Canada, in which country would the survivors be buried?

(remember, I don't make these up. I copy them from our game). LOL

Challenge:
A man and his son were rock climbing on a particularly dangerous mountain when they slipped and fell. The man was killed, but the son lived and was rushed to the hospital. The old surgeon looked at the young man and declared, "I can't operate on this boy: he is my son!" How could this be?

I'll post the answers as soon as I can. Have fun!

Ready for more MindTrap challenges?

Posted in Mindtrap Monday

I wrote this ahead of time so I could post it from my folks' computer, up in Mt. Vernon, WA.
So...ready or not...here we go:

Easy:
How many three cent stamps are in a dozen?

Challenge:
When the day after tomorrow is yesterday, today will be as far from Wednesday as today was from Wednesday when the day before yesterday was tomorrow. What is the day after this day? (Try saying THAT fast 10 times!)

I'll post the answers as soon as I can. Have fun!

This Week is Crazy!

Posted in Mindtrap Monday
ANSWERS!
Oops! Lyric reminded me that I hadn't put up the answers to MindTrap Monday (supposed to do that on Tuesday). That is just a taste of this week--a rush all the way around. So, with no further ado, here are the answers: (a couple of you were RIGHT ON!):
Easy:
How long will it take to cut a wooden log into ten (10) equal pieces if it takes one minute to make each cut?
It takes 9 minutes to cut the log into 10 pieces, since you only need 9 cuts.

Challenge:
Shadow and his men searched the frozen tundra for escaped convict Sid Shady. Just as they were about to give up, one of Shadow's men spotted a body. Shady was found lying dead in the snow. There were no tracks leading to or from the body. The cause of death was partially due to the unopened pack on his back. Shady did not die of thirst, hunger, or cold. What was in Shady's pack that led to his death?
An unopened parachute was in Shady's pack. Splat!
Have a great rest of the week (which is going by WAY too fast!)
