To LOVE is to SERVE

What is your motivation for Service?

Revelation 2:1-7 - God is speaking to the church in Ephesus through Paul.
He commends them for a number of things
 -- Their hard work!
 -- Their perseverance
-- Their solid stand on the doctrine of Christ

Wow, they sound like a pretty fantastic church, eh?

God must be so pleased with them...  but wait...

A warning comes...  verse 4 says they do all these things that are right, but they have lost their first love.  They have forgotten WHY they are  doing these things!   They are no longer motivated to service (action) by their LOVE for Christ.  The Bible doesn't delve into what their motivation has changed to -- is it tradition?  is it habit?  is it self-fullfilling?  is it to please man?   The details aren't listed, simply the imploring to turn back - "REPENT"  it says.  Turn back to your first love - actions motivated by a love for Christ.

I think back on the things I do - I care for my children, do devotions, go to church, teach children's classes, even the way I dress for church and the way I act....  what  motivates me?  Do I do it because that's what's expected?  Do I do it for some self-fulfilling resons?  Do I do it out of habit?

The Bible is clear...  our actions are to be motivated by LOVE for CHRIST.  I should be doing my devotions because I LOVE Jesus and want a better relationship with him - not because I feel obligated to.  I teach my children (and other children) about Jesus because of my LOVE for Him - not because there's no one else to do it!  I dress modestly and appropriatly because I LOVE Christ - not because of what someone else will think of me....  I go to church because I love to fellowship and worship with others who also love Christ - not because it's expected of me.

What is your motivator?  Do you need to get back to your FIRST LOVE?  Consider the church in Ephesus - doing all the right things, but still missing the mark because their hearts were not in the right place.

Hard work is NOTHING if not done to Glorify Christ alone.
