But I am getting in today's and I will post a few of the pages and things that I have been doing from before today too.
First, for today:
History:
I learned about a 1870's corrupt politician, Boss Tweed, and a cartoonist named Thomas Nast who brought him down. What really got Nast going on making his cartoons? The invention of the NY subway.
I thought that the history of the first NY subway was very interesting. The inventor, Alfred Ely Beach, had to make it secretly because Boss Tweed would have had to have been paid millions of dollars to get Boss Tweed's permission to build it. That is how Tweed operated. If you wanted to do domething you had to pay him bribe money. Instead, Beach hired workers and they build the tunnel at night, even padding the wheels of the carts to make the wheels silent. When it was finished he invited the media and the NY elite to see the grand opening. Everyone was very impressed, except for Boss Tweed. Boss Tweed made money from the streetcars, but now people flocked to the subway. When Tweed came against Beach and his subway, the cartoonist Nast had had enough of the corruption and he let Tweed have it. His cartoons helped make Tweed's corruption public. Tweed eventually was sent to jail. Unfortunately, by the time Nast was out of the way and NY officials could then turn around and help Beach with his subway, Beach was a tired man. It wasn't until 1912 that NY's subway was finally built.
ART:
Today I worked on my transportation studio assignment. Here it is. The picture will link you to a full screen picture of it.

Grammar, Usage, and Mechanics:
I reviewed verbs and pronouns today. These two grammar topics are quite a handful. Verbs have many tenses from present tense through perfect progressive. Not to mention what a transitive verb is and how to tell if a verb is a linking verb. Pronouns are even more involved! You need to understand if they are subject, object, or possessive. They can be predicate nominatives in a sentence. That is just a few of the things to know.
I did other more everyday things for school too. But I thought that I would give you the highlights. |
