Hello Gena, just wanted to check on you and your family. I hope your enjoying your new home. I have enjoyed reading your blogs. They are very straight forward and to the point. I like that. We don't say what we need to near enough, or stand firm as often as we should. Thanks for all the encouraging words.
I need some chocolate!
I assign weekly reading in the Nature Readers to my 2-5th graders. They enjoy the nature lessons, and I love the easy Christian science lessons. The Nature Readers, other science picture books, and Nature study are the only science I assign to my elementary aged children. My oldest daughter just finished her final Nature Reader a month ago. My second daughter is still reading them, and my 3rd daughter will start reading them next year, when she has a better handle on reading. This was one of the best homeschool purchases I ever made!!
This was one of the best homeschool purchases I ever made!! It is the only science "curriculum" I use with my elementary aged children. I love that it serves dual purposes: reading practice, and Christian science lessons. My children have all been a little slower to begin reading, so I could not assign independent reading in these in 1st grade, but we did begin them in 2nd grade. My oldest daughter (6th grade) just finished the series. These work well with a Charlotte Mason method of education ... perfect for the gentle art of learning.
I have been subscribed to The Old Schoolhouse for a year now. I still had another year to go on my 2 year subscription, but I love TOS so much that I renewed already. I'm so excited to be able to receive it for another two years, and I know what will be on my Christmas list when my subscription ends.

The corn tortillas sound great. I haven't made them before, but I do make whole wheat tortillas very often. They are not to much trouble, but are worth every bit they could possibly cause. My whole family loves them, and Gabriel likes to eat them plain. I've been reading a book called Home Safe Home, and it has really motivated me to make even more things from scratch, like toothpaste. Did you know that if a child ate only 1Tablespoon, it could kill them??? Thus the new warning label toothpaste has carried for the past several years. I am going to start adding tips on my blog that have been working for my family, and saving us money. I am so glad to hear from you. I look forward to seeing you soon. Maybe we'll have another bingo night soon.

I'm going to go check this out cuz I've started doing step aerobics (please don't try to visualize), and I need some calories to burn off.
Please pray for a baby named Alina who is having open heart surgery this morning in Colorado. She is given only a 10% chance of survival. Her dad is currently serving in Iraq and cannot be there with his daughter or his wife. I'm not sure if there is any other family around to support this mother while she goes through this very difficult time so we need to lift her up in our prayers collectively so that she will feel the peace and strength of God to help her get through.
I followed the link for the contest and I'm glad I did. I noticed the prayer request for the baby and I will be praying!
A Review of the Draw Write Now Book - Animal Habitats:
I love these maps! Over the last couple years I struggled to find appropriate maps for my children to use as we studied History, so to discover this set has made my job so much easier. I like the fact that two versions of each map are supplied - one with major cities etc filled in and one that is pretty much blank. My two younger children (Kindergarten and Grade 2) use the complete maps, and my older two (Gr 7 and 9) use the blank maps. I also use the blank maps as part of the unit tests I make up for my oldest. I actually own the entire set - the world history and American history maps - but have only used the ancient history so far. I am looking forward to using the rest.
Before you sit down to read this book, make a pot of tea, and have tissues nearby. You will not want to get back up once you commence to read. Told in the style of Dicken's the story relates the woes of a little girl, who befriends a church cleric. Unknown to him, she follows him to the church to observe him and the congregation. Feeling the weight of her poverty and unrighteousness, she hides in the shadows. God had a better plan, however, and you can tell from the title of the book that Jessicas life takes a turn for the best. This is a precious story. This makes a great read aloud or a book read to oneself, young and old. You will see yourself in Jessica, poor and unrighteous before God; but God has better plans.
Hedge of Thorns had been recommended to me for my pre-teen boy, but as I read it to him, I saw so much in it to teach my heart about God, and how he hedges us in. This tender story of a boy and his unbridled curiosity is worth the reading and re-reading. Each time I read it I am captivated by the drama and truama that he reaps upon himself and his family, how the lad learns to trust God in and through adversity, and that God allows adversity for our instruction and protection.
Don't tell the kids the educational advantages of the Party Sticks. They will love it, and be motivated by them to develop coordination, concentration, and more. I was introduced to party sticks at a birthday party for pre-teens children. I thought they would think it was a game for younger kids, but they had such fun with them. The sheer size of them added a dimension to an old game that was fun to explore. This is a fun game for a family night. Young and old will enjoy this new take on an old favorite.
Fellow Christian, prepare to be challenged to cherish God's Word as much as Mary Jones. I realized as I read this to my children how much I took God's word for granted. We rarely need to walk to another room in our home to access a bible. Barefoot Mary walked 25 miles. Because she could not have her own, she committed much of it to memory. This book will remind you, and show your children how blessed we are to have easy access to a bible in our language, is a great conversation starter for your family about how many people groups are still waiting for their own bibles. A great read aloud, or for personal reading, and for the missionaries you support, a great encouragement to "not become weary in doing good for in the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." (Galatians 6:9)
Stepping up the unit study "plate is easy with Amanda Bennet's unit studies. The baseball unit provides you with lots of information to get you started, and lots of great websites to research. This program helped my 10 year old boy become comfortable using the computer for word-processing, and also increased his comfort level using the internet for research. By the end of the unit, he had a fabulous notebook full of information about his favorite sport, and its celebrities. Amanda's unit studies are the best in the market.
I confess I enjoy drawing the sketches in this series myself! I have never been adept at sketching, and following "How to draw books has always been a mystery to me. The Draw Write Now series takes out all the mystery, and inserts all the success. This is a fun series for children just learning to write, but also for the child who is clumsy, shall we say, when it comes to drawing. It helped me too!
The only thing that makes the hymns more endearing is knowing the stories behind them. Listed in alphabetical order, each hymn appears with its music, followed by a brief explanation for how the hymn came to be written. You will never sing one of these hymns again, without your mind harking back to the tender, sometimes heart wrenching stories attached to each. We were thrilled to see the sequel, 101 More Hymn Stories!

Every Lamplighter book I have read draws me passionately into the story and leaves a burning within me to imitate the truth it protrays. "The Bird's Nest" was no exception. When I recieved my beautiful copy, I read it cover to cover that evening. While many of the Lamplighter books target the junior high/high school age, this one can be easily understood by a younger child. For one, the book contains four short stories, "The Bird's Nest" (after which the book is titled) being the first. I read it outloud to my oldest 4 children (ages 6-10), and each time I began to close the cover, they begged me to continue a bit more.
