What Will We do Next Year for School?
Homeschool, of course!
We just finished a full day of worship, food, and great family times. I just now sat down to relax for the first time today. Tomorrow marks the beginning of the end of the school year for us. It is really winding down now. I know that many like to school all year -- it just has not worked that way for us. At the end of June, it seems we are on some kind of summer ride for the short season it is here in the north east. There is so much to be done in the summer months, that cannot be done the rest of the year - from home projects to picnics.
All that to say, the end of a homeschool year is bitter sweet to me. What did we want to do that we didn't get to? What fun unit study can we still fit in?
The "what will we do next year" is a non-issue for us. Anyone who knows me, knows that the title of this entry is fasicious. I used to wonder - "Can we continue to homeschool?" It seemed so daunting. I felt so inadequate. That was because I thought I had to copy the only system I had known. I now realize that the system I knew is broken. Furthermore, homeschooling and public school are two entirely different animals. Pubic school caters to mass education. It conveniences the staff and puts the students second. In so many situations, it is glorified babysitting.
As homeschoolers, we have such an opportunity before us, with our children. It is such a huge blessing. And of course, even though we formally take the summer off, learning never ends. What will we do next year for school? We're excited about a lifetime of learning, in a setting that is NOT for the convenience of mass education. Our children will be home with me. Home where they belong.

Thank you for your words. This is exactly where we are right now. It's the "end" of our first year HSing a K and 2nd grader. I am ready to give up. I won't put them in public school, but maybe a private, Christian school. It's just not working, but maybe....
That was because I thought I had to copy the only system I had known.
...therin lies my problem. But how do I get out of that box? I get so hung up on "doing the lessons". If the lesson doesn't get done each day and we don't move through the book, then how do I know they are learning what they need to? It's very scary to think of letting that go!

Dear Anon,
Congratulations for choosing homeschool, and nearly finishing your first year. You stand in a good place right now, with your first year almost behind you. You have learned a few things about homeschool - including what did not work.
"So what does work?" you wonder. That is part of the mission you are on.
One year, my numbers loving boy turned into a numbers hating boy. What changed? The tools I was using were not working. Lots and lots of writing the math facts, over and over again turned math into torture. When I tossed the book, and began playing math games, his love returned and his number crunching kicked back into gear.
Read the article just above this post, that was in the Washington Post. Be reminded again, that children must be on the same page in public school to satisfy the public school's demands. All children must read in public school, because mass education insists upon it.
In our homeschools, the children can keep a different pace. It can seem scary at first, especially with well meaning relatives breathing down our backs to see if our children are "keeping up" with peers their age.
Have you yet read "For the Children's Sake" by Susan Schaeffer MaCaulay? Or "Language Wars" by Ruth Beechick? These will help you step outside of the only system you know, and embrace a lifetime of learning.
What's normal? How much should we do? At what age? These are all answers that you will be able to give for your own children, as you pray for wisdom (God wants to help you!) and take a look at what others are doing, for ideas.
Don't compare yourself to anyone - there is no other family just like yours, and each of your children is unique.
