Meet our feathered friends!

Posted in Homeschool

Along with the million other things we have been working on around here, one has been such a treat and a breath of fresh air! Bird Watching!!

Before I had children my big hobby was bird watching, I would go on weekend fieldtrips with avid bird watchers here in Louisiana and spend hours on walks watching and looking for new birds on my list.

I have binoculars, books galore, feeders, birdbaths, you name it we have it! I love birds! Both of my grandmothers loved birds and this was always one way that I felt closer to them, still do. For years (Since having children) my binoculars have become dust collectors, my books are under piles of clutter and my bird feeders and baths have been empty. :-(  About a year ago we started filling the feeders with the boys and watching the birds with my binoculars and the whole family has come to enjoy this pastime.

Winter is the most amazing time of year to see the birds that visit for a short time as they go about their travels. I often pray that they will stop at our home on their way to their final destination but year after year it just never happens.

This season has been the best ever for bird watching; we have been like crazy people jumping around in excitement over the birds we find at our feeders each day (Especially me). After bird watching for over 10 years I finally got to see a very special and rare bird that I had honestly given up hope of ever seeing. Would you like to see the little beauty???

A Painted Bunting!!! In living color (no punt intended) they have been coming to the feeder daily all day long for a few days now. I thought I was dreaming when I first saw the little guy at our feeder, Troy thought I had lost my marbles as I ran frantic about the house grabbing cameras, video camera and binoculars for all to come see! I don’t know how long they will be with us but I sure am going to enjoy them while I can! J

Would you like to see the rest of our daily visitors???  Some of these birds are year round friends and others are here for the winter. I have not listed them all but these are our favorites!

Click on the birds names to read more about each bird and hear their song.

Red-winged Blackbird

Black-capped Chickadee

Northern Cardinal

House Finch

Purple Finch

Brown-headed Cowbird

We are looking forward to the Great Backyard Bird count coming up, this is a wonderful project to do with the children along with a unit study on birds.

http://www.birdsource.org/gbbc

What is the GBBC?

The Great Backyard Bird Count is an annual four-day event that engages bird watchers of all ages in counting birds to create a real-time snapshot of where the birds are across the continent. Anyone can participate, from beginning bird watchers to experts. It takes as little as 15 minutes. It’s free, fun, and easy—and it helps the birds.

How to Participate

It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3!

1. Plan to count birds for at least 15 minutes during February 15–18, 2008. Count birds at as many places and on as many days as you like—just keep a separate list of counts for each day and/or location.

2. Count the greatest number of individuals of each species that you see together at any one time, and write it down. (You can get regional bird checklists here.)

3. Enter your results through our web page.

Here is a neat study that we use along with the GBBC.

Nature lesson birds

If you get a chance fill those feeders and put out some fresh water. If you happen to be in the south fill your Hummingbird feeders because they are here and looking for food!! We have been filling ours and the sweet little hummers have been coming by to visit us daily!

Those little nimble musicians of the air, that warble forth their curious ditties, with which nature hath furnished them to the shame of art.  ~Izaak Walton

I almost forgot the geese, they love our birdfeeders too and drink out of our birdbaths! Yes, we have Geese poop everywhere but we love them nonetheless! They are so pretty!

Have a blessed weekend and take some time to enjoy the birds!!

Hugs & blessings,

Tiany

P.S. I am so sorry about my blurry pictures, hopefully I can upload some video soon!

Great post about your birding. We love to watch birds too. Wow, the geese land and hang out in your yard.We have red wing blackbirds, goldfinches (state bird), other finches (they've nested on our porch decorations before)and hummingbirds.

Cardinals are so pretty, we don't get those, boo, hoo. I don't think we get the fabulous painted bunting either! That is a dazzling bird. We'd be excited to see one too. Now we know where some of our spring/summer time birdie friends hang out during the winter! At your feeder. :) Ha! They are 'missing' the 20 degree weather here. Smart birds!

They are living good where you all are.

Thanks for sharing God's feathered creations with us.
In Him,
Marie

What a beautiful collection of birds! We have them too but not as colorful, except for Blue Jays and Cardinals. Geese are here eating snow for drink...poor little guys.

I love to watch brids from my back porch. I'm hoping that one day I will be able to identify more than two birds, cardinals and bluejays.

Hi Tiany!

We love bird watching too. Not so much in the winter, as I am very opposed to stepping outside for any long period of time in these freezing temperatures. ;o) We have a lot of yellow finches, cardinals, blue jays (which are very fisty), and hummers. Hummers are my favorite. They get pretty fisty with one another too, when it comes to drinking from our one feeder. This summer I am going to add a couple more feeders around the porch. Hope you have a great week. Thanks for sharing your beautys with us!

Blessings,
Lori

You saw a painted bunting! I think they are so beautiful, but have never seen one up close. Gracie just did her notebooking pages on that one the other day and she colored them so pretty!
Gracie and I love watching the birds. We need to fill our feeders. Thanks for the inspiration.
Is that picture at the top a poster? Do you own it? I love it!
Heidi

P.S. In our local paper this past week, there was an article about a very rare bird (for these parts) that's been hanging around~ a bullock oriole. It was interesting to read about all the local birdwatchers flocking to where they can see this bird!

I can't believe you got a photo of the painted bunting! Jump up and down fun!!!!! We here are glued to our windows watching, too. If you visit my nature blog you can see my feeders, but not any birds. My camera doesn't do a good job taking bird pictures for some reason.

Fantastic Show & Tell! Thanks for all the links. We have been anticipating getting more into bird watching since we moved into this house with great bird-yard potential. I see you have a feeder hanging, it gets so windy here, I'm wondering where to put them...

One bird we are amazed to see around the parks here are red-headed vultures! yikes!

Oh, I like to watch birds, too. Not to the extent that you do, but our feeder (just like the one you posted) hangs just outside our dining room window. We've seen some pretty birds, and many "regulars", but only during the spring and summer months. They must go south for the winter and hang out in places like yours. Our winter birds are the scrub jays who are still trying to find a hazelnut or 2 that the squirrels haven't burrowed away. LOL

What a great Show and Tell this is. My Hummingbird feeder is empty since they are all at your house. How exciting to see your special visitor not once but daily for a while. I love the picture of your son "Learning"!

Your numbers will be impressive I'm sure.

with the boys. Gosh, I must be tired, I'm envisioning little boys obediently sitting in the bird bath saying "Mom has really lost it now!"

Thanks for the heads up about the bird count

I have to admit that I know very little about birds, but I'll tell you a little story. I was working as a bookkeeper for a small business. It was run from the home of the owners. They were avid bird watchers. Their home was completely decorated with bird photos & boarders.

I was working away at the computer when I suddenly heard gun shots. I ran to the window to see what was going on. I was sure we were being robbed since it was a vending company & they had thousands of dollars in quarters on hand on any given day.

I was shocked to find it was the owner shooting at a flock of birds surrounding the feeders. He walked back into the house & saw the stunned look on my face. He explained that he had to scare away this one type of bird because it kept the other birds away. I can't remember the names of the birds. I just remember being scared to death! I had no idea he had a gun...and he made me nervous BEFORE this happened!

Anyway, that was a very good show & tell. Very educational. My daughter wants to learn about birds, so I have a feeling that I'll be checking out some bird books soon.

Your excitement is contagious to!

We are using Jeannie Fulbright's Zoology- Flying Creatures of the fifth day. I had wondered about the Great American Bird Count. I'm thankful for all of your information.

My husband will be glad to know where the red wing blackbirds are residing. They pepper our road ways in Iowa throughout the spring and summer. He drives a lot and they are his entertainment!

Thank you for this educational and delightful show and tell!

I love this post! You have clearly communicated your enthusiasm for birds, and the other commenter is right. You're contagious to us all!

We tried to have a feeder a few years ago, but we have problems with the dogs, darn it. Wish we could figure out how to have a feeder again....

Thanks for sharing! You are such a blessing to me as I watch how you are schooling your boys!

I did not know there were painted buntings in Louisiana! It is beautiful. We've been bird watching for several years as well. We mostly see sparrows, finches, doves, cowbirds, and red-winged blackbirds- oh, and a family of great horned owls live in our backyard. We got to see the babies emerge from the nest last year. It was quite an experience. :-)
