Under His Construction

• Jan. 26, 2007 - Reaching Your Child's Heart Through Foundations

I have found that there is nothing more powerful than the Word of God for doing this! This is always where you will go to lay the foundations of every subject and you will also find the principles that govern every subject also.  God said that "if the foundations be destroyed where can the righteous go?" and this is so true!  So in other words our foundations must be based on truth.  We want our children to question what they believe and why- if someone puts their faith in Mohamad then why? Do they have something solid to put their faith in?  Why should they believe what he said? The same is true for any belief- So I want them to question why they believe the Bible to be true- and because Mommy said is not acceptable! So I use prophecy (among other things) to show them that the Bible is the infallible Word of God- besides those things that have not come to pass related to the end times, the Bible is 100% accurate in its prophecy and these are not just general prophecies that anyone could have predicted, but very specific prophesies foretold often hundreds and sometimes thousands of years ahead of time.  So once the foundations are laid for the Bible being the complete Word of God, completely reliable to build their faith upon, then we can use it to lay all of the foundations for all of the subjects.
The foundations can be looked at three ways- Biblically; why study this subject and how do we look at this subject through God's eyes (for example: Science is the study of God's world and we study it to find out more about our creator and how to properly steward his world), Academically; what are the natural divisions of the subject (again the example being science: we would look at creation to see on which days all of the branches of science were created, 1st day- physics- light, chemistry- elements, atoms, 2nd day- meteorology- weather, oceanography-waves, tides and so on...)   The third way to look at the foundations is historically- what is the history of the subject (so for whatever branch of science we are studying we would look at the history of this branch for example if we are studying we would look at a timeline for the history of the subject and when different things were discovered and then maybe key in on one individual like Linneaus for Zoology, George W. Carver for Botany, Galileo for Astronomy, and so on...)
We work our way in each subject from looking at the subject as a whole and then moving to its parts- so again for science after we have looked at the subject as a whole by laying the above foundations (except the Historical because for science it is easier to study the history of each individual branch as you are studying that branch rather than trying to look at the entire history of science all at one time) then we will move to whatever branch of science we will be studying in depth and again you will lay the foundations for that subject- so for Meteorology we would define what it is and what God has to say about the weather and why we would study it. We would also look to see if their are any natural divisions we could make like seperating the study into two division: air and water.  So for air then we would study the atmosphere, cold and warm fronts, wind, severe weather like hurricanes, tornados, thunder and lightening and such. For water we would study the water cycle and all the ways that water falls from the clouds, an in depth look at the clouds, and so on.. Now something else we would do is look at all the jobs available in this field and the different instruments used to measure weather, and of course we would look at the history of this subject.
The Principle Approach is so awesome and it is the most important part of the study  because the whole reason for learning these things is to gain a Biblical worldview, so we use these studies as a catalyst to teach Biblical principles.  So for Meteorology I would decide ahead of time what I wanted them to know concerning the Bible and this subject.  I would most likely use our weather study to teach the kids about how powerful God is when we look at the severe weather and its power and realize that God is bigger and much more powerful than that, I would also use this study to teach the kids that God controls the weather and uses it for His own unique purposes to bring about His will. So when we study about clouds we would read about how God used a cloud to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt and to guide them to where He wanted to go, we would also look at Elijah when he was in a sense mocking the Israellites for worshiping Baal and telling them to have Baal send down lightning and when they couldn't he called upon God to send down lightning and God used that to bring the Israellites back to Him.
And isn't that what it truly is all about...bringing it all back to Him!!

Thank you for telling everyone the simplicity of it (Principle Approach). It took us (Mandi and I started the same time) a good two years to figure that out, and if someone can skip the beginning years of tears and heartache~ then all the better for this family. It really is amazing how fulfilling and freeing it is when one can grasp the 'GRACE' in it all. Another key point that a new homeschooler to the PA method should begin to do is renew their mind on,the indoctrination that was received in the public education system. That is what most of us grew up in and that is all that we know. And unfortunately this is what we feel is the model that we have to go by. Not remembering that it did not produce the kind of education that is built on truth~ or a firm foundation, as God's Word can give us!!! Getting away from the public school model will be freeing, especially when replaced with the Lord!!!
Mandi, I would love to read any 'key points' that you have gleaned from the two different world views (Vision Forum~ DVD's).

Done! I will definitely post on the key things Doug brings out! It will most definitely bless everyone! Thanks for what you added- getting away from the public school model is so essential! I am still finding ways from the ps model that I am having a tough time getting rid of!
BTW- Jen and I have known each other since Kindergarten! Her friendship is a precious gift from God!
