I am loving my new found knowledge of grammar and I can tell you about modifiers with complete confidence in what they are now! Any of you not sure what they are? A little grammar lesson for you:
Modifiers are simply words that modify another word. For example, I can write a sentence about the sky like 'Look at the sky' but if I change it to 'Look at the blue sky' then I have just modified the word sky by using an adjective to describe the noun sky. Another example using an adverb to modify a verb:
Without modifier: I ran fast.
With modifier I excitedly ran fast.
You can even use an adverb to modify an adjective like when beautiful becomes exceedingly beautiful.
So the whole purpose of why I am writing this is to share some great games that show kids the many great uses of modifiers.
1st game- Played like charades you will have your kids make two lists of words. The first list will be all verbs (jumping, singing, eating, ect.) and the second list will be all adverbs (vigorously, speedily, disgustingly, etc.) You will need two hats for each set of words to dram from. Each player will draw one from each hat when it is their turn. They will need to act out the verb in the way described by the adverb. And of course you know the rest, but make sure both words are guessed correctly!
2nd game- This one we picked up for the kids for Christmas and it is now a favorite! You all remember the old Mad Libs books where you fill in the parts of speech to complete a crazy story. I loved this as a kid and was so excited to see that they have turned it into a card game! It is so much fun and the kids are learning how much fun modifiers are! Yes- modifiers can be fun when you are making up crazy sentences like....
"Lovely poodles wickedly despise extremely ugly prom dresses!" |
