Under His Construction

• Feb. 24, 2007 - A Biblical View of Education

"...and you will know the truth and the truth will make you free" John 8:32

I know I use this Scripture alot, but it rings true in every area of our lives including education. As God has been renewing my mind in the area of education over the last few years I have been amazed at how much the public school had skewed my views on education. I had been holding myself in bondage to their methods, subjects, and calendar.

In James Rose's 'A Guide to an American Christian Education', he has a chart comparing Noah Webster's definition of education with what the Bible says about education. Look at how nicely these go together:

EDUCA'TION, n. [L. educatio.] The bringing up, as of a child, instruction; formation of manners. Education comprehends all that series of instruction and discipline which is intended to enlighten the understanding, correct the temper, and form the manners and habits of youth, and fit them for usefulness in their future stations. To give children a good education in manners, arts and science, is important; to give them a religious education is indispensable; and an immense responsibility rests on parents and guardians who neglect these duties.

"All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

Let's compare these-

Enlighten the understanding=for teaching

correct the temper=for reproof and correction

form the manners and habits of youth=training in righteousness

fit them for usefulness in their future stations=adequate equipped for every good work

So the Bible becomes our primary text and God is the authority in education and tells us what we are to teach our children. I see so many mom's struggling because they are trying to model their homeschool after the public school model mostly because that is all they know and don't realize that it can be different. For me the turning point came when I started to see how God views education and this truth truly has set me free!

The title I was recommending to you is Modern Fascism by Gene Veith.

And I have never explored the Principle approach because all the descriptions of it that I read have never grabbed me in a positive way. Perhaps I really would like it and have never given it a fair trial.

I use Truthquest HIstory. Is this something the fits the Principle Approach?
