I have a great book called 'Fun Projects for Hands-On Character Building' by Bob and Marilyn Boyer that is full of great and creative ideas for using Scripture in raising our children!
I have tried many of their ideas and love them! Our latest is Scripture flash cards - you write down verses that you want your children to learn on one side of index cards. On the other side you illustrate the verse with some sort of cartoon that will trigger your child's memory. For example - for the verse "Better is a dry morsel with quietness, than a house full of feasting with strife" Prov.17:1 , I drew a line down the middle of the card and on one side a happy family sitting around a table with very little food and on the other a family with a large feast spread out on the table that are angry and arguing (I used things that my children often argue with each other about to make a more personal application) and a mother yelling at her kids to "stop fighting!" And for the verse " A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the grief of his mother." Proverbs 10:1 I again drew a line down the middle and on one side was a father smiling with a shirt on that said "Glad Dad" and beside him is his smiling son with a shirt that says 'Wise Son". On the other side is an angry looking boy with a shirt that says "Foolish Son" and beside him is his mother who is crying "Boo hoo".
You can also do ones that have a word clue and a picture. One we did like this was for the verse "Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him." James 1:12. I drew a stick person with a large crown on his head that has the word 'Life' written on it and across the top I wrote "When I am tempted to sin..."
By the way - don't let your kids miss out on all the fun - have them join you in making these - my kids are having a blast making them!
Scripture memory and life application all in one - can't beat that! |
