My last post seemed to ring true in many households - it did in my parents also - they will be having a yard sale in a week! LOL!!
Well we not only have been battling laziness around here but also selfishness - this is such a hard one! It seems like no matter how many verses or stories we read or how much disciplining I do, it is a daily battle with our flesh to not think everything should go our way or be about us! Anyone else have this problem? No, of course not, I didn't think so!
So I started thinking back to how God wants us to be governed (see my previous post on this here) and that in the government of ourselves we have two commandments to follow that encompass all others: Love the Lord with all of our heart, mind, and strength and love our neighbor as ourselves. I started thinking about the time when Jesus said that whatever we do to the least of these people we are doing to Him and another time when He questioned Peter asking if Peter loved Him and told him to feed His sheep. So if I am to show my love to God then it is through how I show love to others. It is truly about serving.
Amazingly I am constantly asking my kids what they are seeking to serve or be served, but what I am realizing is that I have not set the pattern for them to follow in this area. We are so caught up in our own lives that we do not take time to see what we can do to meet others needs. It hit me that if this is the greatest commandment God gave us then I am to first and foremost show my children how to serve others and to always be on the lookout for a need that we can meet. It is like the popular slogan from the movie 'Robots' that came out a few years back - "See a need, fill a need!"
I am thinking this may be just the cure for selfishness - my kids need to be exposed to the joy one gets from serving others in order to establish a lifelong commitment to it! I can't help but think that there will be no more important lesson they will receive in our homeschool that will better prepare them for what God has called them to do - serve! |
