Okay I think it is time that I address this issue for all of those seeking this answer. Every since I posted about parts of speech I have daily had at least one person visit my blog from a google search (or whatever search engine they were using) with the words 'Is I a noun?' or 'Is I a common or proper noun?'
I understand where you all are coming from - my own education in the area of grammar (among other subjects, well, pretty much all of them) is to say the least lacking. So in tackling my own children's education I am now relearning all of this and not too long ago could not have answered this question for you - in fact I would have been right there with you doing my own google search!
So to make your search easy I will just lay it out there for you and give you the answer you are looking for.
I is in fact a pronoun which is a word that takes the place of a noun like me, you, us, he, she, and so forth. They are great little words that keep us from having to write paragraphs like the following:
The other day Mandi's (insert 'My') family and Mandi (insert 'I') went to the store. While Levi, Mandi, Olivia, Garrett, Cole and Owen (insert 'they') were at the store (insert 'there'), Levi, Mandi, Olivia, Garrett, Cole and Owen (insert 'they') bought some ice cream and root beer. After Levi, Mandi, Olivia, Garrett, Cole and Owen (insert 'they') got done shopping, Levi, Mandi, Olivia, Garrett, Cole and Owen (insert 'they') went home and made root beer floats. The root beer floats (insert 'they') were delicious! |
