Under His Construction

• Feb. 25, 2008 - Inheritances: The Biblical Answer to Debt?

In our debt ridden society that we currently live in we have grown up with the view that going into debt at the beginning of one's life after leaving home is the normal. We take out college loans because this is just how it is done right?  We believe that there is no other way to start a marriage then to go into immediate bondage to the banker in the purchase of a home.
Over the last few years God has been challenging to rethink these ideas and measure them against His Word. So what do I find? Well for one, I now regard getting a college degree with less value than I used to, in fact I find no value in it when it comes to secular institutions with only few exceptions, but that is another topic for another time.
In my research I am seeing that God has a lot to say about building inheritances for our children to be passed down from generation to generation. Not just money inheritances mind you, but spiritual ones as well.
A quick word search of the word inheritance at Blue Letter Bible brings up 203 verses in which the word appears 239 times. This is not even including all the related words that would be connected. in the OT God set up rules and regulations for how inheritances were to be passed down. Proverbs is loaded with verses about the wisdom of passing down an inheritance (spiritual and monetary) and what the character of a child should be in order to be worthy to have that monetary inheritance passed on to them. And while this inheritance can be passed on when the parents die it is by no means limited to this. We today tend to think that this is to be willed to our children and passed on when we die, Does God put these limits on it or do we? Isn't this really His money to be used for His glory? Can it be used to help our faithful children get a fresh start in life without going into debt? Can it be used to aid them in their endeavor to serve the Lord according to His calling?
It is interesting to look down through history and see that while debt is the normal of today this has not always been the case. Families did not used to just live "in the moment" for the here and now. They took their God given roles of training their children up to serve the Lord seriously. To build up an inheritance to be passed down from generation to generation to be used for God's kingdom. Going into debt was frowned upon. Don't believe me - ask your grandparents and even great grandparents if you have that option. Ask the elderly in your church. But don't go by that alone, go to the source of truth. What does God's Word say concerning debt?

Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.
Romans 13:8

The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower [is] servant to the lender. Proverbs 22:7

In Deuteronomy 28 God told the Israelites that if they obeyed Him (verses 1-2) one of the blessings would be that they would not need to borrow from anyone (verse 12) but if they disobeyed (verse 15) they would be cursed and one of these curses would be that others would lend to them (verses 43-44).
As with most everything in this post Christian culture we have forgotten the wisdom of the Bible. We have forgotten that God has the answer to all situations including debt. We have embraced debt and view it as the only means to getting an education and buying a home. We no longer hold to a generational view of families. We have quit looking at building an inheritance as a tool to be used for the kingdom of God and passed onto our future generations to continue that work. We are allowing our children to begin their lives in debt.
I encourage each of you to research this as a family and seek God for wisdom in how to break this cycle of debt bondage in your own individual family. It truly begins with each home.

Thanks for these reminders. I tell my husband often that we are giving a spiritual inheritance to our children.

Peace to you,

Hi!
Thanks for your blog and your message. I so agree with you! My husband and I are working our way out - of debt. We are trying to sell our house and scale down. (we'd appreciate your prayers!!). It is such a bondage to have debt hung over our heads. It takes away from every aspect of life - robs you of your time, joy, energy, etc. I am new to the blog world. If you have a minute I'd love you to visit me:

I will be visiting you often. Keep writing about this - it's good for me!! :-) Michelle

We are trying to teach our children to learn from our mistakes. Not to go into debt for ANYTHING. I think a lot of Americans go into debt to give the appearance of being "successful". I pray that our children will learn that they don't need to be concerned with what the world sees, but what God sees.

Debt free. a pipe dream! Ok, I know not really, but I can't imagine getting to that place personally. I have to say that it's terrible how even the church has sold out on that issue. Looking back, it Really bugs me that I was encouraged to go into debt to get a degree so that i "could take care of myself." What a terrible burden to put on our young women. I did what I thought I was supposed to do, went far into debt for a Master's degree, worked for 2 years, and now am a very happy to stay at home mom who will, Lord willing, never go back to my using my expensive degree. But my DH will be paying off that debt for a long time. I am SO against going into debt for an education. If the Lord doesn't open the doors for a woman to further her education w/o incurring lots of debt, then she shouldn't do it. I feel like a whole generation of women sold my generation of women down the river. They thought they were making us "free" to be able to live our own lives w/o being dependent on anyone, but in reality, we have a whole generation of women in their 30's and 40's who are slaves to their careers and debts. So I intend to break the cycle in my own home and encourage my own girls to seek the Lord's path for their lives. If that includes a college degree,He'll provide for that (and maybe through our provision for them). It kind of bugs me when people ask my preteen girls (even Christians) "what do you want to be when you grow up?" How about Godly.
Ok, that's the end of my rant!! Good post =) I haven't posted much on my blog lately, I think I'll go cut and paste and rant to the world <G>

This is a difficult topic. We're working our way out of debt like so so many others. I appreciated the verses you mentioned. America really started the debt trend, and it's contagious like a terrible virus. A friend in France tells me that they really don't use credit cards there, and in Italy it's been unheard of to do anything but pay cash for your home. However, America's debt habits are spreading, and even these formerly cash-only societies in Europe are beginning to catch the disease.

Renae - that is the mot important inheritance by far! It's the only inheritance I have to offer my children as well right now.

Michelle - Hey thanks for coming for a visit - I look forward to hearing from you more! I tried to comment on your blog but I don't have an account there so I couldn't. ) : I am glad you enjoyed this - I have been pondering these things a lot lately! We live in debt as well and it really is such bondage to us! I will definitely pray for your situation.

Corey - Yes - I was just reading 'If I Only Had a Green Nose' by Max Lucado to my kids and thinking of all the green noses I had sought throughout my life. It is hard to let go of the group thinking we all were brought up under the influence of - instead of seeking to be the unique individuals that God created us to be, we try to fit in with the group. ) :

HisPoima - We have lost a Biblical vision of a woman's role in our culture and, yes, within the church as well. Feminism is really just another form of Humanism - us trying to take the place of God somehow. I have been very blessed by a DVD called 'Return of the Daughters' produced by the Botkin sisters who also co-authored 'So Much More'. I encourage you to get ahold of either of these resources - you will be blessed! Godly indeed! ( : And that is exactly the answer they should give when asked (in love of course). ( : I look forward to reading your rants!
Jennifer - America's debt habits and so much more! We can thank the Federal Reserve for much of these problems - talk about the consequences of an idea! It is very interesting the things that are taking place economically in our nation right now - definitely some hard hitting consequences of our national debt coming down the pike. ) :

This is something my dh really talks about alot, wanting to leave something for our 4 dc. I don't know if we will be able to do what we want, but I think God honors those desires.
Haven't stopped by in awhile; lots of good stuff here as usual.
