Under His Construction

• Jul. 10, 2008 - It's a Good Thing

Like Martha Stewart, I love a 'Good Thing', especially when it comes to homeschooling, homemaking and food.  I so love to find out from others their favorite things that I thought it would be fun to share some of my favorites that I have found over the years here.
So my first 'Good Thing' that I want to share I actually just bought a few weeks ago and it has quickly become a favorite. Every year we anxiously await the arrival of the newest edition of several different homeschool catalogs. So when the new Veritas Press catalog came I quickly perused through to see what new recommendations they had. They have not steered me wrong thus far and so when I saw that they had software for teaching word roots I knew I had to try it out.
I am so glad that I did! The game is fun and an excellent tool for teaching etymology to your kids. I knew my daughter (10) would have no problem understanding enough to be able to play but I was not sure how my son (9) who just finished 3rd would do with it, but I am happy to say that they both are loving the game and have learned many prefixes, suffixes, and roots already.
The game begins by giving the kids a list of words and their definitions. The kids and to figure out what the individual roots and a prefix or two means from the definitions. They then move on to the next part where they are given all of the prefixes, suffixes, and roots and their meanings from the words and are to build the word again with only the definition of the word as a clue (they have seen these words from the previous round but it is hard to remember what they were - trust me - I know!) (  : After they have successfully built the words they move on to the last part of the game where they take those new vocabulary words and place them in the correct sentence. The object of the game throughout each part is to rebuild ancient ruins from ancient Rome and depending on how well they did through the game they either were successful or they need to try that set of words again. I hope that all made sense but if not you can go to The Critical Thinking Company's site and download their FREE trial software!  Lots of good looking titles over their as well - if they are as good as this one I am a sold customer.

Mandi, thanks for the great recommendation. I trust your judgment on these things! By the way, the Jonathan Park series you told me about - I was able to purchase all the CDs from Vol. 1 from a local homeschool family for just $10 - we just finished it today after only having it for a mere few weeks! It's a wonderful series.
