Under the Sky

So many books, so little time...

At least that is my personal opinion! Last August of last year I posted a list of books and movies from the Victorian, Regency, or just slightly after that time period that I had either read or viewed or wish to. Jun. 22, 2006 - Great list!

I enjoyed your list and found a few I need to read like Lorna Doone.

Loved Great Expectations, Oliver Twist, Persuasion by Jane Austen. Have not read, but have in the pile North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell, Romola by George Eliot, Evelina by Frances Burney, and Mary Barton by Elizabeth Gaskell. I was a lit major in college, and I, too, enjoy reading these books for fun. Also I noticed the absence of Henry James, whom I really enjoyed.

Jun. 23, 2006 - Movies, movies

Hello Kate!

"Victoria and Albert" is not on your list! You must see it! :o) I also like the somewhat more recent "Mrs. Brown."

I like "Daniel Deronda" by George Eliot (?). And "Berkeley Square" is a BBC TV miniseries that follows three nannies from different households. It's a bit like watching a period soap opera, but if you like that era it really is entertaining!

Have you tried Netflix? We just discovered it and it is great! You can do a free two week trial from their website. I send in a movie on Monday and get a new one back by Wednesday in the mail and they have a large selection of British movies (so many I never knew about come up on their "recommendations" for me).

I also saw "Far from the Madding Crowd" several years ago. I think you've read that one as well?

Happy reading/watching!
:o)
Amy

OH! Have you seen "Remains of the Day" and "Howard's End" with Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson? Those are two that I watch over and over again. I also liked "A Room With a View" but haven't seen that in a while and can't really remember it.

And don't miss "The Winslow Boy"--one of the greatest movies!

I must stop. This is getting way too long....

What a fantastic list!!

Two years ago I started "The Great Expectations Classic Book Club" for Jr/Sr High homeschool girls and we've read 18 books in those two years! Many are on your list. If possible, we top off the book with a video/DVD based on the book. It's fun to discuss the differences with the girls and to see which they liked better - the movie or the book.

Now...tell me true...which Pride and Prejudice movie do you like better - the A & E version with Colin Firth or the new one with Kiera [sp?] Knightly? Personally, I like them both, BUT I prefer the A & E. Probably because it's MUCH longer and can go into more of the book, but also because their version of Elizabeth and Darcy are exactly like what I always imagined them to be.

I'm also VERY attached to Emma Thompson's version of Sense and Sensibility. It's one of the very few movies where Alan Rickman plays a GOOD GUY! HA!

I know I don't comment much - but I just LOVE your blog!!

You are a very well-read woman. I'm JEALOUS! I have this problem of getting overwhelmed b/c I want to read ALL of those books (at least most of them) so I just don't set aside the time to read ANY of them! I need to overvome that. I'm sure I'm missing out on a lot of really good literature. What do you recommend I cut my teeth on?

Blessings,
Traci :)

Wow! Great list. The Victorian Era has never been my favorite and I find Bronte and Austen a bit tedious...but that is just me. And some really bad high school memories of having to prepare a project meant for five myself because my fellow classmates didn't desrie to do their parts. Maybe I'm projecting my dislike of my high school English class on Victorian Literature and should give it a second chance : )

I do like Dickens, though.

I know this is an old entry but I just love book lists. I have never heard of Elizabeth Gaskell and I'll have to go and check her out. I have tried quite hard to read Dickens but haven ever finished. We do enjoy the Masterpiece Theater offerings, however.

I've read a few on your list and I try to read at least one "classic" each year. This past year it was Brother's Karamazov and it was quite an undertaking. I think I'll move back to England for my next foray.

Again, thanks for the list.

"Dawn's Early Light" by Elswyth Thane is about a young Englishman who comes to Virginia in colonial America just before the revolutionary war. It is a great read for anyone of age 14 and up.

About Me

I love to read, I love my husband and children, I love my Savior. I enjoy dark roast coffee with cream and sugar, Earl Grey tea with scones and clotted cream, long walks in forested areas and Redwood trees. I have a mad passion for history, strong sound Reformed theology, and good creation science materials. I have strong opinions, but respect those of others. I am grateful for my life, for every breath, for each day that the Lord has made. I will rejoice in His mercy.
