 Aug. 30, 2006 - Don't Marry Career Women?

Posted in Current Affairs
Check out this article if you can: The link may be killed at any time due to the "controversial" nature of the topic.

Basically, the author cites several studies stating the difficulties maintaining healthy marriages if the wife is working outside of the home.

Despite the eveidence from the sociological literature as well as the practical experiences of women everywhere who are tired of trying to "have it all", the totally predictable feminist outrage against the original Forbes.com article has been deleted  from the site.

Households need running, children need loving and marriages require nurturing and common sense dictates that if the adults in the household spend upwards of 80% of their time paying attention to work-related tasks outside the home, something (or more likely everything!) will suffer.

I and many former career women like me, have been there. We know the truth- that there are reasons that tradtional marriages work better in many respects.

It is sad that Forbes.com bowed to political pressure and refused to continue to air the truth. We must expose our young women to the realities about women "having it all".

Let our girls read articles like the Forbes.com opinion so they will be well-informed as they make their decisions regarding careers and family.

Right now, advice girls and young women are getting from mentors and peers stress the "girls can do anything" motto with no mention of the price that may be paid for that.

Ladies, we have to make our voices heard and let our girls know the truth! Of course this starts with out own families but hopefully our lives will serve as a shining light for others.

The Biblical model for marriage and family is the only one that has stood the test of time and our modern social sciences as well as evidence from the breakdown of our society as we stray from the model proves this time and time again.

I read the article and rebuttal. I was a career woman when we got married - I fit the article's definition. I couldn't wait to quit working when my first was born. I noticed both article were focused on the adults and their happiness - not much about kids. Feminists can't stand to have anyone say they should stay home. The spokeswomen of that group think they speak for all women, and that they are all about choice. But they are not, if the choice is to stay home.

It's not true that all feminists have a problem with women staying home with their children. You only have to read Mothering magazine to find a whole mess of 'em who believe otherwise. I'm another one, myself. I'm liberal, feminist, pro-choice, the whole bit, yet I stay home with my daughter because I believe it is best for her and because I truly enjoy her company. I couldn't imagine someone else getting to be with her every day.

I would like to respectfully point out that many feminists oppose staying home with their kids out of fear. If they are married women, staying home can and often does mean they will be utterly dependent on their husbands, and any marriage can go wrong, and not every divorced woman gets alimony, and not every ex-husband pays child support. Not to mention the issue of retirement: homemakers can potentially be left in poverty if they depend solely or mostly on Social Security. That's happening to elderly women right now as I post this, in fact.

If the feminists in question are single when they have their kids then of course they need an income; even child support often isn't enough to let them stay home, and welfare's been gutted. (If you're at home doing motherwork and housework you're not exactly being lazy, but that is how poor at-home mothers have been portrayed.) It pains me to realize this because I know daycare is not as good for kids as being cared for by their own parents, but what do you do once the baby's there? It does no good at that point to tell a woman she should have kept her legs closed, which seems to be a line both conservatives and some liberals use.

There's working at home but it's very hard to sort out the scams and among those businesses that aren't scams, it often costs money that the mom just doesn't have freely available. There are loans but they tend to go more often to small biz owners with storefronts, which negates the whole idea of working from home. Those who manage it anyway still need someone to watch the kids. And on it goes.

It's not about (or just about) trying to be men. It's about a system so messed up that women literally don't have any good choices unless we're very lucky and the men in our lives step up to the plate and stay there--and don't die, become disabled, or fall in love with someone else. If you've got any useful, realistic suggestions, liberal feminism would probably love to hear from you.
