May. 2, 2007 - "My First Little House" Article Published in TOS!

I am so thankful to God for the opportunity given to me by The Old Schoolhouse Magazine (TOS), sponsor of this site, to write about my experiences designing unit studies from the "My First Little House" series of picture books.  Very well-suited for the kindergarten through second-grade set, I have enjoyed designing science, Bible, character and hands-on learning about American history through the series.

If you have a chance check out the latest issue of TOS.  There are some very interesting articles about Little House on the Prairie and farm unit studies as well as the usual encouraging word for Christian families dedicated to homeschooling.

Particularly interesting in this issue of TOS is a lengthy and thought-provoking interview with Ken Ham of Answers in Genesis on the topic of protecting our children.

So many Christians decry homeschooling and insist on sending their children into public school to be "salt and light".  Ken Ham has a very interesting response to that decision in his very informational comments.

What are your thoughts on sending children into public schools to be "salt and light" ?  Do you think that is what Jesus meant in his treatise on the subject?

Jun. 30, 2005 - Book Review: Jesus by Leith Anderson

With excellent writing and careful historical documentation, Jesus: An Intimate Portrait of the Man His Land and His People by Leith Anderson will be a valuable addition to any Christian’s library.  A biography of Jesus that integrates the four Gospels in chronological order, Jesus gave me a fascinating look at the life of Jesus that added to my knowledge and understanding of the Bible.

Difficult to put down, Jesus is written in such a way that the reader is captivated, wondering what will happen next. Of course, I was already very familiar with the stories of the Bible. Jesus gives an added dimension of history and geography (including maps) that vividly reminded me that Jesus was in fact fully human while he was fully God.  While reading, I could feel Jesus’ sorrow upon the death of Lazarus, concern at the Wedding at Cana and his anguish towards the end of his life.  The apostle’s confusion, the amazement of those who were healed and the anger of the Pharisees was nearly palpable.

Informative sidebars give historical references, cultural backgrounds and definitions that add to the understanding of the related text without being disruptive.  “Legion” and “talent” are defined, towns are described and people are profiled.  In fact, those sidebars are one of my favorite features of the book. Larger boxes containing information on major topics were also very helpful and were found throughout the book. The Herods, the Samaritans and leprosy were a few of the topics discussed in this manner.

Some major points that were bought home to me as a result of my reading of this book about the life of Jesus:
1. Jesus spent much time traveling and this travel was often uncomfortable and difficult
2. Jesus spent much time healing and bringing the joy that comes with healing to others
3. Jesus spent much time teaching, often repeating the same lessons for different crowds
4. Jesus felt that prayer was essential, despite his very full schedule and frequently sought periods of solitude.

Overall, this book made me feel closer to Christ and desire even more to become more like Jesus each and every day.

Thanks to Mind and Media  for graciously providing this book for review in cooperation with the publisher, Bethany House.

Apr. 19, 2005 - Cold, Hard Cash for My Writing!

I am beginning my career as a freelance writer in earnest now. After going through a bit of a dry spell, God has been blessing my efforts lately. Although a book proposal was turned down by Zondervan, I had an article accepted by Christian Parenting Today and received payment for an article that I wrote for Westchester Parent. God is good.

And if all that was not good enough, I found a pretty cool set-up at Associated Content in which they will pay freelancers to write articles to be featured on various websites.

They just accepted 5 of my articles, Praise God. I could use some cash in my PayPal account about right now.

All you homeschool moms (and dads) who are freelance writers (real or aspiring) should check them out.

And if you mention that I sent you and you actually start writing for them, I could get $20.

Hope this is helpful.

Apr. 17, 2005 - Reviewing Books is Fun!

Okay it doesn't get much better than this. I love to read and I love to give my two-cents worth of an opinion on everything and anything. So what better role for me than one of a book reviewer. I spoke with Stacy over at Mind and Media and she informed me that I have been approved as a reviewer. We had a terrific conversation. She is an awesome woman of God!

Alright! If you are interested, check out her site here.
