Pretty In Pink

Fresh pink cheeks

From the moment you were born.

Pink little booties

Hide your tiny  toes.

Your pink Pooh snowsuit

Kept you cozy and warm.

Happy pink smiling lips

From your earliest days

Bring joy to all who see you.

The color flatters you.

Months go by.

A gift from our friends.

The color seems to be here to stay.

“Are you only going to dress her in pink?”,

Daddy cautiously asks.

“She looks great in pink, you know,”

My reply. Nodding head agrees.

Two years later, you choose your own clothes

Insisting to wear “Pretty Pink Dress”

Every day.

Not just any pretty pink dress

But the one with the pink satin trim

And pink satin roses adorning the hem.

A twirling blur of pink chiffon,

Wearing Mommy’s gold bead necklace,

You accessorize.

Mommy and Daddy watch you and smile.

No longer a rosy-cheeked newborn,

You are still

Pretty in pink.

My Superhero

I have a little rescuer

He is five-years old today

He helps me in so many ways

Almost each and every day

He rescues me in the store

When it’s an extra penny I need

When I am making a loaf of bread,

His little hands will knead

He helps his baby sister

When she needs help with her coat

He builds her houses and garages

And lets her play with his boat

When it was raining hard one day

My hero had to climb

Into the back of the wagon

Our umbrellas he had to find

That darn vacuum cleaner!

I can’t get it apart

What’s wrong with the CD player?

I can’t get it to start

In comes my little fix-it guy

He knows so very much

Just like his dad in fixing things

He has a mechanic’s touch

Most of all, my little guy

With a bright and happy smile

Rescues me on my worst days

And makes my life worthwhile

Why are you still not sleeping?

Why won't you close your eyes?

You just will not settle down

Despite my fervent tries.

You say you want to see Daddy

Then you want some juice.

I am ready for sleeping

So how about you?

Little Princess

Who is this little princess?

The one who does not want to wear pants?

Pretty pink dresses are your uniform everyday.

You love ballet although you can hardly say the word

Twirling skirts and glitter

Lipstick and earrings

Fascinate you today at the tender age of 2.

Did I raise you this way?

My only dresses are for church

Lipstick and earrings a rare occurrence

In my post-baby days.

Or is your sweet innocence sent by God above?

The One who made you “little girl”?

You are the One who knew

I needed to be reminded of the little girl

Buried deep inside of me.

Thank you Lord for my little princess

A constant beckoning from You to remember the sacred trust

You gave me when you created me female

May she always be Your little princess

And serve you with joy and gladness

All the days of her life.

A Child’s Prayer

Dear God please keep me safe and warm

Protect me from those who may cause me harm

God, hold me close and hold me tight

Guide me through the stormy night

Even when life seems hard and unfair

Please remind me you will always be there

Make me strong and help me stand tall

Even when I am afraid I will fall

Forgive my mistakes, I am not always right

Just continue to let me live in your light

Sometimes I feel small, weak and alone

Lord, please protect me until I get grown
