Aug. 15, 2008 - I'm a yarn!

I'm a yarn!  Amanda of Dyeing to Fly dyed this beautiful colorway and named it "Sarah".

Now ... how do I get some of myself to knit into gorgeous fall/winter longies for Maria?!

Aug. 7, 2008 - 6th shorties and I'm done ...

For the shorties season, anyway.  Maria still needs longies for the upcoming season!  A knitter is never done. :-)

Maria now has 6 summer shorties.  Purples BFL, Bleeding Hearts BFL, Bella 100purewool, Pinks 3 ply 100purewool, Hardly 3 ply 100purewool and Drake Cashmerino.  Whew!  It's nearing the middle of August but we should have at least a month of shorties weather left.

I need to send my undyed purewool off to some talented dyeing-mama for at least 4 of our fall/winter longies stash, and then I want to order some gorgeous colorways from Wooly Wonders by Nada, too.  I'm thinking at least 6 longies for the next season ... we had 6 for winter/spring and that was a good number.

As I contemplate the fall/winter stash, I'm knitting some sweet girly newborn longies.  I hear that Cathy will be knitting some handsome boyish newborn longies and then we can stock together again!

P.S. - to see pictures of Maria in these pink shorties, feel free to check out my personal blog at http://www.unlikelymother.blogspot.com!

Jul. 12, 2008 - Drake by Plumknit, knit by Mama

Knitting still continues ... a few days ago I finished the Drake Cashmerino (dyed by Plumknit) shorties.  Not exactly a girlish colorway, but very nice!  Reminds me of my husband's school colors.  And it matches perfectly with her red, gray and black solid shirts!

Here is beautiful Miss Maria, modeling her new shorties!

On the needles next is "Hardly" 3ply 100purewool.  Green and 2 pinks ... should be pretty!

Jul. 3, 2008 - Maria modeling "Bella"!

5 months old already!  Where does time go?  I can't believe I am knitting MEDIUM shorties for this little girl.  It feels like just yesterday I was casting on 70-ish stitches, and now it's 90-ish.  Aren't these cute?  I had to make the inseam very short because she has such short legs!  The first shorties' inseam was 2.5" and they were capris at first!

Jul. 1, 2008 - Finally ... pictures of THREE shorties!

I apologize, it's been a long time since I have posted!   Because this is strictly my "knitting blog", I have moved all personal/homeschooling/children/etc posts over here.  Feel free to visit!

So anyway ... I finished 3 great shorties recently.  The first ...

Is a custom-dyed colorway - shades of purple BFL - from Wooly Wonders by Nada.  It's been done for awhile but my camera had a near-death experience (left in rain for the entire day!) and I couldn't take a picture.  When I finally got it back, amazingly it still worked!

And the second ...

Also dyed by Wooly Wonders by Nada.  This colorway is called "Bleeding Hearts" BFL.  It's a favorite around here and matches so well with the red and pink shirts I bought from Americal Apparel.  I love those shirts!

The third shorties I finished just tonight, and took a picture at night and so I'm not sure how well they look but they are REALLY pretty.  "Bella" by Zen String.

These will match a lot of shirts too. :-)

Next on the needles - Cashmerino from Plumknit - "Drake"!  It's reds, blacks, grays and small hints of purple.  Cashmerino is a DREAM to knit - I'm excited!  I haven't had much for knitting time but I'm feeling the urge now as it's JULY and Maria only has these three shorties!  I have yarn set aside to make her 8 ... but I may only get to 6, we'll see.  She's in medium shorties now ... my little girl is growing up!  5 months already!

I'll post pictures of her IN these shorties soon!

May. 30, 2008 - Just finished ...

This ...

You know what bugs me?  The legs ... they don't look like that (uneven) in real life.  I mean, yeah - the "pattern" isn't exact in real life but they don't stand out like they do in pictures.

Anyway, this is the last custom.  I finished this recently too ...

Now I have about 8 yarns sitting before me - waiting to be turned into Maria's summer shorties.  I'll post pictures as I finish them. :-)

May. 19, 2008 - Retiring?

Why I am semi-retiring from the knitting business?

I suppose I could have wandered off quietly, but I wanted to share the reasons why.  Well, I've been knitting shorties and longies for Adventure Knits since August of 2005.  It's almost been 3 years since I have been knitting for children all over the US, Canada and even cool places like Australia, Croatia and England (Cathy has knit for someone in Norway, too!).  It has really been fun and a pleasure!  I always love to get customer emails, especially if they send a picture of their child in my creation!

When I started knitting, I had two children and was pregnant with my third.  My busiest time probably would have been from the beginning until the fall of 2007, when I was pregnant with my fouth.  I started homeschooling my two oldest children (the oldest is K-aged now) and that was a higher priority.  I also began knitting for the little one and WOW did she ever get the dream stash!  I didn't knit enough for my third child so I was over-compensating for the fourth!

Anyway, I had full intentions to get right back at it after Maria was born in late Jan 2008; however, she has the same odd skin condition that her next oldest sister had as a baby.  Some of you may remember that.  It's not as bad but it does make her very uncomfortable and I spend a lot of time holding her.  Of course I LOVE holding her, but it makes it hard to be a speedy knitter like I used to be.  That's one reason.

Another reason is that I recently enrolled with a medical transcription training school online, and I want to devote my energies to this as well.  Because my hands-free time is limited anyway ... I need to devote that time to this new endeavor.

Another reason - I began REALLY homeschooling the children this spring.  I had been doing more preschool activities with them but I knew I needed to buckle down and get a "curriculum" for them.  We decided to go with Sonlight, which is GREAT.  It's a lot of reading and that alone takes up (good) time.

And so ... for these reasons I have decided to put the needles away - commercially, anyway.  Of course Maria needs new knits!  And perhaps I will stock a special custom every now and then.  Maybe I'll create an instock if I have time, who knows?  But for now, it's time to concentrate on these new parts of my life.  A Mama can only do so much!  I would never want to add so much to my plate that my children suffer for it.  That's WHY I stay home with them - to be the best possible mother to them.

Of course I'll still be around, on this blog, on messageboards where I have made good friends ... I'm not going anywhere!

May. 16, 2008 - What I'm working on ...

Right now I'm working on some shorties (or capris?) for Maria in a custom Wooly Wonders by Nada colorway.  I asked for purples, and I got exactly that!  I am about 40% done with them.  The weather here isn't exactly shorties weather yet so I have time!  My plan is to make EIGHT shorties for her this summer.  We'll see!
