Update

Posted in About Me
Sorry, I haven't blogged for a while.  I have been so busy that I have forgotten blogging.
Anyways, Yesterday I finished my second babysitting job, for the same people. This time though, I watched the baby too.   I got paid TWELVE Dollars!  (because I watched the baby too.)  The mama got the kitchen totally clean, and a few other things too!  I am so glad I can be a really big help!

About the kittens:  Today Samuel went to our friends house to live and R (the girl getting the kitten) will  love him a whole lot! Last Monday another friend got Jonathan.  We are keeping David and Goliath.  Abigail needs a home though.

Got to go,
Emily Rose

My First Babysitting Job

Posted in About Me
I just finished my first babysitting job.  Well, it wasn't really babysitting, it was more like distracting the children and keeping them out of the way.  The mom needed to do some housework, so I took care of her six year old son and younger daughter.  I brought  a "Surprise bag" with felt puppets, coloring books, crayons, and story books.  The stories were a big hit.  The younger girl almost fell asleep in my lap when I was reading to the two of them.  We also played with the boy's balls and the girl's dolls.  I think we all had fun.
When the mom was took me back home, she wrote a check to mom so she could pay me. The check was for TEN DOLLARS! I was shocked, and so was mom, 10 dollars is a whole lot to pay an inexperienced 11 year old girl for just 2 hours!
I had fun though,

Homeschool Kids Write Entry #7

Posted in Stories
Today I decided to do a Homeschool Kids Write assignment.

Todays Assignment: Below are three pictures by the famous 20th century American artist Norman Rockwell. He is best known for capturing our imaginations on the covers of magazines. In 1913, at the age of 19, he became the art editor for Boys' Life, the magazine for Boy Scouts. His first published magazine cover, Scout at Ship's Wheel, appeared on Boys' Life September 1913 edition.  Three years later his work began to grace the covers of The Saturday Evening Post and continued for 47 years with over 320 covers to his credit.  His work could also be found on the fronts of The Literary Digest, The Country Gentleman, Leslie's Weekly, Judge, Peoples Popular Monthly, and Life Magazine.

There’s an old saying that a picture is worth a thousand words. A lot of times when we look at pictures we make up the story in our mind.

Choose one of the three pictures below and write a short story about what is happening.  Try not to just describe the picture, but pretend that you are part of the picture either as one of the characters or someone just out of the artists view, watching the scene.

Here is the picture I chose!
Once upon a time, a little boy was sent off to his Grandparents farm, which, was 3 miles away.
The little boy's parents had wanted to send an older sibling along to accompany the little boy, but, he had insisted that he "Twusth Big Enuff." Because he had "Dust turned fife," and "twusth" a "Big Boy."   The parents finally agreed and the little boy set out with his little bundle of clothes and toothbrush. He got his daddy to tie it on a stick for him so he could carry it easier.  Then he set out with careful instructions to Grandma and Grandpa's farm pinned in his pocket. That way, if he got lost, he could show someone his instructions and they could take him there.  About half way there he got tired, and it being his normal nap-time he lay down in a patch of green grass and fell asleep. After a while a policeman walked by and seeing the little boy waked him and asked him what he was doing.  The little boy replied "I wuth, I wuth sleeping." The policeman looked at him and asked him where he was going, the little boy replied "My Grana's house."  "Where is that" the policeman asked.  The little boy pulled the paper out of his pocket and showed the policeman.  "That's easy to find little chap," the kind policeman said.  Then he posed a question: "Shall we go get some ice cream first?"  "Yes,Yes!" cried the little boy.  So the policeman took him in to the nearby Ice Cream Parlor and they had a nice treat.  Then the policeman took the little boy home.  THE END

beans...Beans....BEANS!!!

Posted in Learning Fun
I grew some beans for a Botany experiment a few weeks ago.

The pictures are good examples of how the seed grows.

First you get the things you need.

You Will Need
One round clear cup, glass, or wide mouth canning jar
A paper towell or two Or a piece of fabric would probably work too.
A bag of cotton balls that is at least half full
Bean seeds

Instructions

Get the clear container.  Take the paper towell and roll it up loosely.  Drop the rolled paper towell into the cotainer and fold the edges down so they stick about  one fourth or less over the top of the container.   Fill the inside of the paper towell lined container with cotton balls about three fourths full.  If you were to draw a line right through the middle the layers would look like this: Container edge, Paper towell, Cotton balls, Paper towell,  Container edge.   Now put  some beans in  between the edge of the container and the paper towell, Wet it untill there is one inch of water on the bottom and you are done.

Here are some pictures of what mine looked liked.
This one is pinto bean and the one above it is lima.
A few hours later than the last one.

The next one is what they look like from the top.

That's it!

A new Poem

Posted in poetry
Mama gave me the choice of writing a poem for my writing assignment today and so, of course, I chose it!

Thoughts

This world is full of lots of things,
Things to make pleasant thoughts,
Like roses, smiles, a little child,
And Jesus near and dear.

So when you find,
The thoughts your thinking,
Turning sour like lime,
Just think about a pleasant thing,
You'll find your thinking pleasant thoughts again!

Surprise..... KITTENS!!!

My brother's kitty, CeCe had kittens!  Yesterday, I was finishing up my schoolwork and CeCe (who happened to be inside) was lounging on my foot (which happened to be up on the couch with the rest of me), when she let out a cry. I put her in the garage thinking that she might want to get something out there but she came back to the door and asked to come in. I let her in and she jumped up right next to me, started purring, and let out another cry.  I started  to wonder what was happening.  I called Mom and she came over, looked at CeCe, and then said "Quick, CeCe is  going to have kittens.  Get big plastic bag, one of the old blankets from the garage, and the box with all the old towels.  CeCe is going to have kittens.  Right here on the couch."

"On the couch?" I gasped.  "Uh, Ok!"  I got the requested items and then before long Cece started to have kittens. Over the next few hours she gave birth to five kittens in all, right on the couch! They are so cute!  Here are some pictures.

This picture is of the first kitten shortly after it was born.  I am holding it.

This is CeCe after we thought she had had all her kittens.  There are four kittens in this picture.

This picture was taken this morning and it is of the fifth kitten.  I have been calling her Abigail. She is the only girl, and also the only one that has white as the main color.
This also shows how tiny the kittens are.

I am glad CeCe had kittens!

Butterflies- Their Hatching!

Today the Painted Lady Butterfly chrysalises that we were growing started to hatch!
5 butterflies have hatched and 2 haven't yet. We will have 7 in all when they are all done hatching.
Mama read that they turn themselves into liquid while in the chrysalis and then change into butterflies.
Here is a poem I made up about the butterfly.
               Caterpillar
        Growing,     Ugly
    Squirms,     Grows,     Spins
Coccoons,     Larvea,     Wings,     Eggs
    Flaps,     Dries,     Flies
        Pretty,     Gracefull
Butterfly

Butterflies take a long time to dry out and even Butter-by who was the first one to hatch and hatched about 8:00 this morning is not flying much yet. The butterflies were in a little cup that had a lid on it this morning but we transfered the butterflies to Forests big huge tarrarium to hatch and live for a little while.
You will probably hear more about the butterflies because not all have hatched yet!  It will be an adventure to see all the butterflies hatch!

Homeschool Kids Write Entry 6

For a change I will do one Homeschool Kids Write assignment and then an entry about my trip!
Assignment six is:  The Time Machine, the first novel written by H.G. Wells and published in 1895, tells the science fiction story of a man who travels through time.

You have found a time machine.  You may go back to any one day in your life to live over.  What day would that be and why did you chose that day? What would you do the same or different?

They day I would choose would be my 11th Birthday.  I chose my birthday because I got some REAL "I-Love-You" time with Daddy.  I would do it all the same except I would have the video we watched last twice as long because that was my favorite.   That day I woke up knowing it was my birthday and got up. Nothing exciting was happening but I wasn't expecting much because Forest and I usually get no favors on our birthdays except maybe school off if we are lucky enough to have our birthdays on a week day and Mom and Dad are in a good mood.  That day I wasn't really expecting much though.  My birthday was on a Wednesday. I didn't have to worry about that though because my birthday was just one day before a Holiday that had a week of vacation. So I had "A week of Birthday Vacation"!  Daddy was home that day and I had the joy of playing with him most of the day. That morning I stayed out of the way as much as possible so that all secret surprises that were probably being prepared would be kept secret and surprise as long as possible. I could tell after a few munutes something was happening because there was a mysterious silence that was quite loud.  Mama was making breakfast and Daddy and Forest were smuggling something in to the house.  I kept out of the way as much as possible.  Mama called me to breakfast in the dining room and I was surprised to see my favorite: Peach Smoothie and something else I can't remember.  There was also a big Sparking Candle and gift bag. In the gift bag was a Pinafore for a dress I had and a Matching bonnet. A pare of horse pants and a vest of the same material plus a black turtle neck shirt and a cream white shirt and a  blue brown silver and white striped shirt too. then in the bottom was something wrapped in tissue paper. I pulled it out. It was heavy, and flat.  I opened it up. It was a black brief case of something. I unzipped the case. It was a Laptop COMPUTER from Daddy. I needed a moment to soak this in, I had used old computers of Mama's and Daddy's before that but now I had my own computer! I looked at it, It was an IBM Thinkpad and had all my favorite programs on it. It ran Linux (daddy's favorite operating system that I must admit is pretty easy to run comparing to Mac.). Daddy helped me set it up during the day. In the evening we watched a video about the life of Jesus. It was pretty good. But my favorite part was just sitting with Daddy.  Right now I am using mom's mac because it is in a convenient spot but I use the computer Daddy gave me quite a lot.

Camping

Posted in Family Fun Time
When we got to Death Valley that  night of March 20, 2008 (or should I say morning of March 21, 2008?, it was 12:30 AM!).  Our first thought was a campground.   We had a close one in mind:  Stovepipe wells campground. It was closest to us.  We drove in to the campground and looked for a spot for tents. No such luck.  the spots we wanted  were all filled.  So we took a RV spot  in front of the spots we wanted hoping that in the morning someone in one of the tent spots we wanted would leave. This time we guessed right, lots of people left that morning and we found a wonderful spot that was right in front of a big place to play for Forest and me.   When we had got the ticket for a campsite the night before we had gotten it after midnight so the silly machine acted like we had bought the ticket in the next afternoon!!!

Here is a camping quiz.

Category A  questions are easier than the harder Category B questions

Category A                                                                     Category B
True or False:  There are lots of campgrounds        True or False:   A teardrop is a style of van that you can
all over North America.                                                   pop the top up on.

Are both RVs and tents aloud in all                           Are campfires permitted in all campgrounds?
campgrounds that you don't hike in to ?

POLICE!

That's right, I said police!  We got a good dose of them too!  No, We didn't get any tickets or even official warnings. But I guess we look strange enough that they want to see what hippies we are.  The first one we met was a sheriff.  We were trying to figure out how to get to a highway and had not totally pulled out of the lane of travel. Well, anyways, the sheriff drove over, parked in the ditch, and came over and said "Hey, your car busted or something? Your in the lane of traffic."   Daddy answered "Oh, sorry, we didn't notice (starting the car and pulling over)."  Mama adds "Can you help us figure out how to get to this highway?" The sheriff looked at the map we had and quickly showed us the way to go.

The second encounter with a policeman wasn't so pleasant.
Forest wasn't wearing his shirt and was kind-of slumping sleepilly in the middle of the car.  The middle seat in the back of the car had a lap belt.  I had a shoulder belt because I was on the side of the car.  We pulled up to an intersection and I glanced out my window.  There was a policeman on a police motercycle.   I always think of these as "Modern Mounted Police"!  I wondered why he kept glancing at us.  I said "Daddy, do you know there is a policeman beside us?"  Daddy said yes.  The red light changed to green.  Daddy started to go.  When we were half through the intersection I noticed red-and-blue flashing lights.  At that moment Mama said "Henry, Your being pulled over by the police"  Dad found a side street and pulled over. The Police guy pulled over behind us. I don't think they ever pull over in front of people, do they?  He walked up to us with a scrutinizing frown on his face and asked "Do you know why I pulled you over?  Dad answered No in a puzzled tone.  The policeman then said "That little boy in the back seat, is he strapped in to anything? Daddy, Mama, Forest and I all answered in unison " YES".  The policeman squinted and Forest sat up a little straighter so he could see. He then asked "Is it  plugged in?"  Forest and I lifted it a bit to show  him it was.  He squinted a tiny bit more and said "It's pretty loose, better tighten it."  Forest did and he asked for Dad's drivers license, asked if he had ever had a California drivers license, Dad said no so he asked his little microphone for the status on dad's license then said to fix our right brake light when we got wherever we were going.  After that he left.

I think those times where the most exciting  times of the trip!

Better go,
Emily Rose

Drive to Death Valley: The Story of Our Trip #2

I got a comment from Hildegard and she was wondering if the ice chest crunched Forest Zoo and I.  I thought that was a good question.  The answer is that no, the ice chest didn't crunch Forest and I. The front passenger shoved it against the seat. It is fairly large so it was stuck fairly tightly. If we wanted to get the ice chest out we shoved the seat forward.

CHAPTER 2 Of:  Drive to Death Valley

After passing the town that Sir Henry's teacher lived in we drove for a long time. We stopped only for Rest area's and Gas.  After a really long day of driving we  arrived in Death Valley. It was 12:00 but still quite light outside because it was a very bright full moon that night.  We drove into Stovepipe Wells Campground at 12:30 and looked for a camping site for tents but there were none.  We found a spare RV spot and put our tent there for the night with plans to move in to a empty tent one that was vacated in the morning.   Since it was after 12:00 the silly machine that we payed assumed that it was the next afternoon and gave us a ticket for 2 nights for the price of 1!   We finally crawled into our sleeping bags at 1:00 AM and fell asleep....

End of Chapter 2. (I know, it was more of a teaser than a chapter wasn't it?)

Drive to Death Valley: The Story of Our Trip

 Chapter One: The Early Drive
We left early in the morning of March 20, 2008.  It was 6:20 AM, Sir Henry (Daddy) was driving, Elizabeth Joy (Mama) Occupied the front passenger seat while Emily Rose was happily seated in the left passenger seat and Forest Zoo claimed the middle, our large ice chest resided in the right back passenger seat.  I now think it a very good thing that policemen do not give out tickets for un-buckled Ice chests because ours did NOT have a seat belt on!  As we drove over the mountains that are close to our house you could see little white snow flakes falling.
The snow flakes caused a brief bit of worry but it did not last long as we could most certainly see that it was not sticking.  As we got higher we started to see a small amount of snow building up beside the road, but that did not cause much worry. Then the road was starting to look a little bit slippery so Sir Henry slowed down. It got slicker as they started down the other side of the mountains and Sir Henry asked that everyone in the car be quiet so he could concentrate.  The car's occupants slowly quieted down and they finally made it to the bottom of the last hill with snow.  They Approached a town where Sir Henry's favorite grade school teacher lived.  Sir Henry called him on the Ham Radio.

The End of Chapter one.

More Soon!

I Got To Go To The Zoo!

Guess What? This last Thursday, We were at my Auntie K's house and Auntie T suggested we go to the Zoo so we went! The pictures are at Aunt T's blog because she was the only one who remembered her camera!
Take a look at those Polar bear pictures!  They sure were active!  I got to push Felicia in her stroller quite a bit, but a lot of the time she would hold someone's hand and toddle along beside or in front of them!   The petting zoo was quite interesting and I loved the hay pile to jump on, The wooden barrel horse (the reigns were quite original,  made out of nylon webbing, you can see in the picture part of the bridle is made of the same material).  The eagles nest was a lot of fun too!

A song about the Zoo
By Emily Rose
(Tune: Mary Had a little Lamb)

We went to the Zoo Zoo Zoo,
Zoo Zoo Zoo, Zoo Zoo Zoo,
We went to the Zoo Zoo Zoo,
We saw some animals!

We saw a great big eagle,
Big Eagle, BIG EAGLE,
We saw a great big eagle,
It did a nice- show!

We saw two big Polar Bear
Polar Bears, Polar Bears,
They were active Polar Bears,
They splashed and chased the ball!

We saw some white Mountain Goats,
Mountain Goats, Mountain goats,
They were quite the thing to see,
They jump from rock to rock!

That was really lots of fun,
Lots of fun, lots of fun!
That was really lots of fun,
I had fun at the zoo!

We Went On A Trip!

Have you been wondering why I haven't posted a blog entry in a while?  Well, wonder no more, I was on spring vacation with my family!  We went to southern California!  It was nice and warm there, Plus we went to the San diego Zoo and Sea World in San diego!  I earned a few Junior Ranger badges, But some parks were out of the booklets so they will mail me a booklet .  I will order the booklet online from another National Park. I will do a blog entry about my Junior Ranger things soon.  Another thing I did was to collect some sand.  If I can I will do a blog entry with some pictures and information on my sand collection, by the way, My sand collection is quite small because I just started it this trip but I will show Great Grandpa's too. (that is if I can find it!)
We went through Death Valley, Yosemite, Sequia, Kings Canyon, Mojave And Joshua Tree National Parks or Preserves.  Johua Tree National Park was really neat with all its Monzo and white tank Granite.  Forest and I climed quite high on some rocks, but that is another blog entry.

Better Go for now,

Homophones and Homographs

Posted in Learning Fun
Homophones and Homographs can be lots of fun.

Homophones are words that sound the same but have different spelling.
One example could be Pare and Pair.

A homograph is a word that is spelled different but has the same sound, It also has different meanings.  Two examples of homographs are Batter ( The batter in base ball and the batter you use to make cake)  or Dressing (salad dressing and getting your clothes on.)    Make a list of how many homophones you can think up.  Then do one for Homographs.

I have thought up a few homographs and written an explanation for each of the meanings.
You get to guess the words though!

I. If I were in the Army I would need to drill doing this quite a lot.   I am also a month of the year.  What am I?
II. I am a round fruit.  I am also a color.  What am I?
III. I get whacked with a hammer and am on your fingers and toes.

I would love to see the list of Homophones and homographs you come up with along with your answers to the activity.  So, please comment!

Being the "Salt of the Earth"

Posted in Articles
I have been studying my Young Disciple Sabbath School lessons this week, even  the dig-deeper part!   Well,  I have learned a lot from this weeks lessons.   The topic is being the “Salt of the earth”  and  the memory or Key Text  is:  “Ye are the salt of the earth, but if the salt hath lost its savor wherewith shall it be salted?  It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under the foot of men, Matthew 5:13.”  My Sabbath school lesson says this on the subject: When Jesus told his followers “Ye are the salt of the world”  he was saying we are preservatives to “preserve the world from utter moral corruption,”  (Thoughts from the mount of blessings p. 36 By Ellen G. White.)  Pastor L preached a really good sermon about this subject a while back and he referred to the savor of the salt as it’s punch or power.  He gave us a good recipe which he had gotten from another pastor for helping us give a really good shove in the right direction.   The potion: HP + CP + CC = MI    The result of this potion is MI or Maximum Impact. That  is what we want. We want the most people to be influenced towards Christ.   Now lets skip to the beginning of the potion.   HP or High Potency, High  Potency means lots of savor or punch.  Lets say this: You are a practical joker,  you decide to play a joke on your dad.  You loosen the lid of the salt shaker so that it is just resting on the body of the salt shaker.  Your mom calls for supper and your dad tastes his food.  He calls “Pass the salt please” and you carefully hand it to him.  He flips it over and all-of-a-sudden his plate is covered with salt!  He doesn’t dare try it because he knows it is too powerful.  But if he did Whoa! He would probably jolt forward like someone had punched him. We want that much power to go for a good cause.  We want the salt to be really powerfull and the salt shaker lid to be loose! We also need some CP or Close Proximity to help us not miss the mark.  I had a hard time understanding what Close Proximity is but I will do my best to explain.   To my understanding  Close Proximity is being with the people, Mingling and mixing.   My Sabbath school lesson has helped me understand this a little more.  I will give you a few examples of to help you the way my Young Disciple helped me understand.  Suppose you are visiting Grandma and Grandpa. They live on a farm.  Grandma cooks oatmeal for breakfast.  At the last minute she remembers that there isn’t any salt in it. She quickly adds it and then dishes the oatmeal up.  You take a bite of yours.  What a surprise, your oatmeal is too salty, And your brother is asking for the salt!!!  What happened? The  oatmeal wasn’t stirred very much so you got all the salt!  That is not what we want.  Yes, we want High Potency but if we went that way we wouldn’t get maximum impact.
You see,   if we mi the salt in and it is powerful enough it will cause a great stir! The Close Proximity is when we mix in and give them the  blessing too.   Here is something else my lesson says:  We can’t bring others to Christ if we keep ourselves totally separate  from them.  Instead, Christ calls us to stay so close to him that we won’t be influenced by this world. ( Young Disciple Bible lesson quarterly, 1st quarter 2008, p. 87) If we have Pure religion that is undefiled do we get contaminated by the world?  James 1:27 has the answer “Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.”   That means we don’t have to be covered with the “ dirt” of the world!  The next help in letting us make a huge impact is CC or Clear Communication, which  means make it easy to understand,  I sure hope you understood what I just said!!!  Emily Rose

A poem I like

Posted in poetry
Here is a poem I have memorized and really enjoy.  I have also added another verse on to it!  The original work by Shel Silverstein is in green and my verse is brown.

Tree house

A tree house, a free house, a secret you and me house,
A high up in the leafy branches, cozy as can be house!

A street house, a neat house, Be sure and wipe your feet house!
Is not my kind of house at all, Lets go live in a tree house!   By Shel Silverstein

A street house, RV house, or microscopic flea house,
I don't like any one of those! Please, build me a tree house!! By Emily Rose

PST. take time to look at all the week 7 entries, choose your favorite and then send me an email with your choice to: joyinthemorninglight at yahoo dot com. (Remove the spaces and fix up the email so it will work.) The winner will receive a really cool Dover Publications Wildflower Coloring book and a neato set of Prang watercolors, some watercolor paper and a piece of graphite paper. If you have any questions be sure to ask.

I have a set of Prang water colors and they are really good, but somewhere along the way Mama has found me a more profeshional set and that is what I like to use most of the time!

My entry is a picture of 2 black eyed susans  that I painted just a few days ago especially for this event! and I have also written a poem to go with it.  The poem is below the picture.

Now my poem.

Black-eyed Susan

Black-eyed Susan's out to play,
In a field of grass or hay,
Today is such a nice day,
Mother, may I go out to play?

Black-eyed Susan wants to play,
in the field of grass or hay,
She would like to dance away,
In the field with flowers and hay.

Ask your mother, "Please may I,
In a field of grass or hay,
go and dance the flowers with,
on this pretty flow'ry day?"

Mother answers instantly,
" I will come and dance with you,
I'll fix lunch the morning in,
while you dance with flowers all day!"

I would like to go and dance with the black-eyed Susans, Wouldn't you?
Especially if my name was Susan and I had black eyes!
Just so you know, the first stanza is about the flower black-eyed Susan and the rest of the stanzas are about  a girl name Susan with black eyes!
