Mar. 11, 2008 Being the "Salt of the Earth"
I have been studying my Young Disciple Sabbath School lessons this week, even the dig-deeper part! Well, I have learned a lot from this weeks lessons. The topic is being the “Salt of the earth” and the memory or Key Text is: “Ye are the salt of the earth, but if the salt hath lost its savor wherewith shall it be salted? It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under the foot of men, Matthew 5:13.” My Sabbath school lesson says this on the subject: When Jesus told his followers “Ye are the salt of the world” he was saying we are preservatives to “preserve the world from utter moral corruption,” (Thoughts from the mount of blessings p. 36 By Ellen G. White.) Pastor L preached a really good sermon about this subject a while back and he referred to the savor of the salt as it’s punch or power. He gave us a good recipe which he had gotten from another pastor for helping us give a really good shove in the right direction. The potion: HP + CP + CC = MI The result of this potion is MI or Maximum Impact. That is what we want. We want the most people to be influenced towards Christ. Now lets skip to the beginning of the potion. HP or High Potency, High Potency means lots of savor or punch. Lets say this: You are a practical joker, you decide to play a joke on your dad. You loosen the lid of the salt shaker so that it is just resting on the body of the salt shaker. Your mom calls for supper and your dad tastes his food. He calls “Pass the salt please” and you carefully hand it to him. He flips it over and all-of-a-sudden his plate is covered with salt! He doesn’t dare try it because he knows it is too powerful. But if he did Whoa! He would probably jolt forward like someone had punched him. We want that much power to go for a good cause. We want the salt to be really powerfull and the salt shaker lid to be loose! We also need some CP or Close Proximity to help us not miss the mark. I had a hard time understanding what Close Proximity is but I will do my best to explain. To my understanding Close Proximity is being with the people, Mingling and mixing. My Sabbath school lesson has helped me understand this a little more. I will give you a few examples of to help you the way my Young Disciple helped me understand. Suppose you are visiting Grandma and Grandpa. They live on a farm. Grandma cooks oatmeal for breakfast. At the last minute she remembers that there isn’t any salt in it. She quickly adds it and then dishes the oatmeal up. You take a bite of yours. What a surprise, your oatmeal is too salty, And your brother is asking for the salt!!! What happened? The oatmeal wasn’t stirred very much so you got all the salt! That is not what we want. Yes, we want High Potency but if we went that way we wouldn’t get maximum impact.
You see, if we mi the salt in and it is powerful enough it will cause a great stir! The Close Proximity is when we mix in and give them the blessing too. Here is something else my lesson says: We can’t bring others to Christ if we keep ourselves totally separate from them. Instead, Christ calls us to stay so close to him that we won’t be influenced by this world. ( Young Disciple Bible lesson quarterly, 1st quarter 2008, p. 87) If we have Pure religion that is undefiled do we get contaminated by the world? James 1:27 has the answer “Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.” That means we don’t have to be covered with the “ dirt” of the world! The next help in letting us make a huge impact is CC or Clear Communication, which means make it easy to understand, I sure hope you understood what I just said!!! Emily Rose |
