K.'s work up to date 7/26/07

Posted in Children's Work
Wow, I can tell this blogging thing is going to be tough for me!!!  But I will do my best to keep it somewhat updated.  I can at least publish the girls' work.

So here is K's work, up to date.  Our first writing assignment in SL's new LA 3 Adv program was called "The Thing!"  The assignment was to describe "that thing" under your bed or in your closet.  What does it look like?  What does it do?  Etc.  Well....K. shows her scientific nature in this assignment.  Instead of talking about a scary monster under her bed, she created the Sarpa bird and wrote a rather scientific article about them.  Here is what she wrote for her first assignment:

Sarpa Bird written in June 2007
Sarpa birds are very pretty.  This is an example of a sarpa bird's life.  Their eggs are as a chicken's egg but is round.  First beaks are about as long as a bottle cap.  They turn their heads and make a hole with their beaks.  First they are very cute and smell of mint.  They look like the mint leaves around the nest.  As they grow, they begin to turn into a rainbow of colors when mating season starts.  A male will go to a female and does tricks.  Then he goes to the female and spits a substance called moffabite on the female and makes her able to lay eggs.  They make a nest out of mud and grass and lime and surround it with mint leaves.  They are ready.  The female lays her eggs.  They begin to turn dark violet again.  The cycle starts again.

Written like a natural zoologist, eh?

The next week's assignment was to write a story about the Thing!  Here's K's story:

Starpa! written in July 2007
I couldn't believe my eyes!  My sarpa bird, Ohn, had stepped up.  A few minutes before manager Harpi said that a girl had disappeared!  My family and I were going to see Ashlen, my sister.  She was having a gym meet.  Ohn had taken the girl's place.  I didn't watch much since Andu, my other sister didn't feel well.  At awards, they said that first place was Ashlen!  And then, BIG surprise, Ohn came in second!!  Ohn was just a Starpa!!

The third week's assignment was to merge the two assignments--to summarize both assignments into one assignment.

Sarpa Bird #2 written in July 2007
Sarpa birds are dark violet except in breeding season.   They eat fruit and drink water.  Sarpas have up to 10 eggs at once, the babies crack the eggs with their tiny beaks.  Sarpas, though not mammal, are much like humans.  That reminds me of the time Ohn, a clever sarpa entered the single-person Amathyst city meet.  Ohn was a level 2.  A girl was missing so Ohn took her place, and won 2nd place!  What a Starpa!!

Last week, the assignment was to look at a picture and try to create a story based on the picture.  The picture basically showed a few people on a raft, holding sticks or oars, and a girl in the water a few feet away, reaching toward the raft.

Untitled (written week of July 16-20, 2007)
A tiny boat floated up the lake.  Four boys and two girls were on it.  They looked extremely energetic.  As they played, a girl fell iin the water!!  "The water's cold as ice!" she screamed.  One boy held out his oar.  "Climb!" he called.  She did.  Quick as a rabbit, too!  After that they were able to notice the crystal clear water, soft breeze and beautiful green leaves on the sweet smelling trees, and the diamond-like dew on the grass.  What an adventurous day!!!

Okay that is it so far for this LA program.  We are having a lot of fun with it.  K. had always done very well with SL's old LA programs, and we had started their old LA 3 program this year but it was so bogged down with grammar and rules and such.  We stopped it at week 14 and I bought the new LA 3 Adv.  I am so glad I did!  SL did a great job re-focusing their programs to incorporate the grammar with the creative writing assignments.  We both just really love it.

Tomorrow, I will publish some of A's work.

Thanks for reading!
