Week in review, October 1-7, 2007 (week 20)
This week was packed as usual. For our Bible studies, we read from Acts 18 to Acts 20. We read more about Paul’s missionary journeys, the abuse he took, and the courage he found to continue on. We read about the Cherokee Indian tribe and prayed for them using the American Indian Prayer Guide.
We continued learning about the Constitution by reading the rest of If you were there when they signed the Constitution. We learned about each branch of government, the system of checks and balances, and more about the various folks who were there at the Philadelphia convention. We also read from the Landmark book. Our readings from the Landmark book dealt mostly with the interactions between the thirteen states during this transitional time.
For poetry, we read from our Classic Poetry book. We read an Iroquois prayer and a hymn that we already knew, called “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot”. We had a good time singing the song together.
We read more about the Iroquois tribe. This week, we learned about Iroquois clans, names, and the kinds of foods the Iroquois ate.
For science, we continued reading from Living World Encyclopedia. We are still reading about the oceans and ocean life. We learned about fish and other sea life, both those that lived near the surface of the ocean and those who lived in the depths of the ocean, on the ocean floor. We also read about coral reefs and shorelines.
We also read about cold weather from Usborne Book of Science Activities, volume 3. This was good information for us, since it rarely ever snows or even gets cold where we live. We learned about burst pipes, frost, and snow. We had an experiment to do, but we didn’t have a small plastic bottle to do the experiment. We plan to get to it later.
We also were able to listen to our CD, The Story of Mozart.
K. had a very good week overall. She finished up her math studies for the millions place. She showed mastery of it and moved on to the next lesson, which was more multiple digit multiplication. She is doing multiplication of numbers in the thousands now, lesson 28 form her Gamma workbook, from Math U See.
For vocabulary, she worked on reviewing the words in Lesson 4 from Wordly Wise. We continued our spelling from Sequential Spelling Book 2.
Her Bible readings came from 2 Samuel to 1 Kings. She also finished George Washington, Our First Leader this week for her reader. We finished up Toliver’s Secret for our read aloud. We enjoyed the book and were glad that Ellen was able to see what a strong and brave person she was after all.
A., also had a good week. She continued to review multiple digit addition and did very well! She has finally mastered this and was able to teach it to me just fine. She should be able to move onto the next lesson next week.
For her phonics studies, she continued with her workbook from Modern Curriculum Press. She did pages 116-120. She also continued to do spelling from Sequential Spelling book 1.
We continued to do dictations and assignment sheets from LA 2, intermediate. She finished up Viking Adventure for her reader, and also The Secret Soldier for her read aloud. She enjoyed both stories. She thought it was sad that Sigurd had lost so much, but was happy that he got his Viking adventure. She concluded after reading about Deborah Sampson in The Secret Soldier that she did not want to be a soldier. :-)
Overall, a great week.
