Jul. 30, 2007 - Laundry

Posted in Our Life

I got this idea from another blogger...which one was it? I don't know.

Anyhow, I drastically reduced the amount of laundry I wash by making a simple change. I took all the clothing out of my children's drawers except for 2 or 3 nice outfits and 2 or 3 play outfits. The rest of the clothing was put up into the top of a closet.

I didn't think I could do it at first. Could I stand to see my children in the same outfits over and over and over again? What would other people say? Would they notice my children always have the same clothing on?

Guess what. Nobody noticed! Here are some of the benefits I have noticed-

  • I also take better care of the laundry as far as getting stains out because I don't want to drag the tub out of the closet to replace a shirt if it gets stained.
  • My children can get dressed quicker because the outfits are already separated.
  • They also make sure that they get thier clothing in the dirty laundry because they know if it doesn't get washed that they have to sit around in a robe or pj's until the clothing gets washed.
  • Our drawers are also neater because the children only have a small amount of clothing to keep folded- plus the drawers close nicely.
  • I am able to keep better track of what we do and don't need because I get the tub out once a month or so to replace stained or outgrown clothing.

This was one of the best changes I have made in a long time. I have been doing this for a few months now. Since January or February as a matter of fact. I figured I better try it for a while before I blogged about it- that way I would know if it was really going to work. Guess what I found? I WORKS GREAT!

Interesting idea...I am going to ponder it awhile and mention it to my husband. Right now, my Lambies closets are full! Everyone we know gives us clothes!

You know, I'm really not surprised no one noticed. It is amazing how little people pay attention to such things. Now, of course, if the clothes were, say, large balloons on a striped background, or enormous flowers on top of dogs, people might begin to talk!

Great idea.

I also have to tell you I have tagged you. Please stop by and see what it's all about. You don't have to play along if you don't want to.

What'll they think of next? LOL!

Cool idea! Not sure if I am brave enough to try it.

Actually... maybe we could just have one outfit! Put them in clothes made out of bib fabric and spray the kids off in the yard! LOL! I don't think it would work with my girls... but my son would think it rocked!

Very cool! I think this is a great idea! Unfortunately we have absolutely zero storage space, so the drawers and closet are where I need to keep our clothes for now. BUt I Love the idea!
Makes me want to go throw out some clothing ;)!

That sounds like a really good idea. I think I will try that maybe with a total of 7 outfits this time. It will be perfect to try with the changing of the weather. I have been trying to think how to reduce laundry and mess.
Thanks for the idea,

I've been doing the same thing with my 5yo twins. Laundry was getting out of control. MUCH easier to put the rest in the closet. Hurray for less laundry :-)

I have heard of this several times, I just cannot bring myself to do it! I think I would hear complaints at least from some of my children. It would cut down on things, we have 8 children I am washing for!
One thing I did do, is assign each a towel and that is the only towel they get! That really helped!

What a fantastic idea! I think this would be an amazing switch. 2 of my kids could care less what they wore anyway. This would help significantly with our drawer space, putting things away where they go and the...I'm out of underwear again saga....hmmmm...maybe I'll try it out for a couple of weeks.
