Almost done!

Feb. 27, 2007

hey all! I'm almost done with hunters ed now... Saturdays' field day was really fun! I'll tell you a little about it... we did(and in this order): 1. Skill Test 2. Shotgun 3. Compass 4. Fire building 5. Archery 6. Blood Trail 7. First Aid so yeah, there was a bunch of stuff, took about 4 hours! I'll give a description of each now...

Number 1: Skill Test. Skill test was preatty fun aside from the fact that we had to wait around for like 10 minutes out in thw wind for it... Rebecca and I were late so we got grouped with some other late kids who were still doing the first part of skill test. The first part of skill test was basic gun handling... I got skipped on shotgun though, they did .22 on me and I told em "yeah... I've shot a rifle before", did everything right, everything they said in class *yawn*, then I asked them if I should go through shotgun and they were like "nah I think you're ok on that" :] soo yeah, then after waiting around, we got to actually walk around and cross fences with the guns, did everything right with that too... 'twas pretty fun... there were a lot of cars around. I got asked to take a shotgun(empty yes) out of the guys truck, did everything right, and I put it back in... then we moved on to...

Number 2: Shotgun Now I really do enjoy clay pigeon shooting so this was just great. They had a 20 gauge so, barely any kick. pretty easy, I missed a number of the clays, but oh well, it was fun anyways. those earplugs are weird. Then after everybody had taken their turn(I was first), we moved on to

Number 3: Compass The instructor of this one was a funny guy, probably around 60, he made the adults take the class who were with the other kids. told us all about compasses and explained them pretty well, and gave us candy afterwards! we tracked to the one piece of wood and he said to pick of the other one and asked what it said on it... it said "Nope!" and the one we got to said "Good Job!" and then he was like "And look what's underneath it! CANDY! you hit the jackpot! Everybody gets one!". hehe so that was pretty cool... got some good candy... Then we moved on to

Number 4: Fire Building One of our instructors in class did this one, we all sat around a good fire(which was nice because it was cold out) and he told us basicly how to start a fire and what to bring with you to start a fire... already knew how, but it was fun anyways :). Then we moved on to

Number 5: Archery This one was the quickest class of them all! The guy was probably 25 or so, told us "this is a compound bow, this is a longbow, you don't want to shoot a compound bow dry. That means to shoot it without an arrow. The reason is, you don't want to shatter the bow. ok? who wants to go first?" it was very quick, everybody shot one arrow, some kids decided to shoot some more while we waited for...

Number 6: Blood Trail We waited around the campfire for about 10 minutes and just sorta talked. Joe's younger daughter just bellow Carolyn(she's taking the class too) was helping the instructor keep the fire going... I dunno if she knew where her dad was :P. Anyways, we did the Blood Trail, and it was fun! took us some time to get to the end of it, they said they made the blood out of ketchup and jello. It looked pretty real! and some of that blood was awfully hard to find... but finally, at the end, the blood started getting more frequent so, some of the kids started running forward. Then the instructor said "yep, they're probably all gonna start running", then something caught my eye! I turned around and there it was. a pair of antlers with a smorse box between them. And THAT was the deer we were tracking :D they gave us candy bars :P. Then after that, we walked back and finally made our way back to the lodge and there we took a class on....

Number 7: First Aid we learned about what supplies to take and stuff like that. the lady doing it had her son there doing demonstrations, funny kid, he hardly said anything at all as if he couldn't talk, and on one of the ABC's of first aid (Airwaves), he demonstrated having your head in a side position where the airwaves aren't clear... then the lady moved his head up to a more breakable position and he started choking on a chip he'd been eating :P. He was alright but it was funny, I was like "your airwaves are real clear now".

And after we got out from first aid, we were gonna go do the pelet gun shooting, but Rebecca needed to go home so she could get ready for work. so, we asked the instructors if it'd be alright if we went home. And our instructor said that'd be fine, just to bring our little card with us to class. So, now we're almost done! Tonight's the last class(or, we may have an extra I'm not sure), so we're almost done! It'll be fun! I'll let ya know how it goes once I'm home... possibly tomorrow :).

seeya'll later!

Benjamin

Wow... Here in MT the field coarse is a lot different. They won't let you shoot or bring live ammunition, and a fire outdoors is a huge no no (very dry and it could spread real easy).

Sounds like a blast! I've never shot skeet; just deer =P
