Book selling-Answer to Monday-Wednesday Comment

Book business-First off, I've been selling on ebay for about four years under a different name. I've sold women's clothes, baby clothes, my WHOLE maternity wardrobe, used books, toys, memoribilia. I've gone to Ebay University a few times (actually went out of town and on a plane for one of them), read a vast amount of books, researched the net and other ebayers.

Now, I've always wanted to open a book store. With eight children, homeschooling six of them, there is NO WAY I can do that away from my home, nor would I want to. Ebay is a wonderful option. So, since my husband's family has run a successful plumbing business I approached him with the idea. He was game!

First he went to the bank to open an acct but they wouldn't open one unless we had a FictitiousName filed with the county. I went and did that, it was painless but did cost $25. I want you to know that I take my children with me when I do these appts. so you can imagine five-seven of us in front of a business lady. Once you have a name and it's registered, you have to publish it in a paper. Several papers sent us the info so we chose the cheapest.
Then, we had to apply for a Reseller's permit with the State so that we are legal, thus we have to charge and pay State Taxes.

We also opened up a Business Account at a local bank.

My husband does have a Financial Advisor/Tax Consultant through his work so he makes sure with her on a monthly basis or so what advice she has for us or what we need. (We'll pay our first taxes soon and she told us what records we needed.)

With a Name and a Reseller's Permit you can now contact book suppliers and ask if they will sell wholesale. They all wanted a credit application. You will need money upfront to get the deepest discounts, (we use a credit card and then pay it off when the bill comes), if you use their credit then your discounts are lower.

So, my husband does the ordering, inventory intake, finances and records. We just got a 8-box ordered delivered today so he'll go through that to make sure everything is in order. I do the listing, communications and packaging. My children run the packages into the post office or as in the case today, since my son is now driving, he took a package to work with him and will drop it off when he gets off work.

I'm trying to teach different ones in my family how to do it so we can expand and they learn some job skills in the process. We just got permission to sell at our ISP Parent Meetings so that will be new for us! I've been selling individually to moms that I see but not on a larger scale. We're also finding out the info on selling at our local home school fair in April/May.

I probably told you more than you wanted to know but if you still have a question please ask

No, you told me enough to realize that I was really sooooo not "in the correct thinking department" (ha). I just thought you buy books at a discount, sell and make a profit.......just like selling on ebay (or not? are we supposed to go through all that just to sell household items and clothing on ebay?) Anyway, I am so glad you posted because I didn't go back to reread your comments from 28th (I didn't know how---I am new at this). Besides the above two questions, I have one more. How much time does all this take??? Do you still have time to homeschool, etc? thank you so much. I enjoy reading your posts.

Yes, I do sell on ebay under www.thebiblicalfamily.com. and in person to other homeschooling moms.

Do you have to go through all that to sell household items? Well it depends on how successful you want to be. It's like anything else the more knowledge you have the better the results. We are a business and therefore need a certain amount of professionilism (sp) to do well. We need to know what we're doing and be trustworthy enough that people feel comfortable buying from us. There is no way we could run seventy-five to a hundred auctions at a time and be sane. Because of my past experiences over the last four and a half years my mistakes are fewer and far between.

We still have items damaged in shipping so we offer replacements where we can. Bigger packages land on smaller packages or packages get caught in the post office machines. We want others to be happy with their purchase and we know they spent hard earned money with us so we take great care with their purchases and how we package them.

Time-I spend ALOT of time doing this. My youngest is five though so I don't have any babies to nurse or take care of. (We haven't been blessed with a new one in five years!) My children are all trained to help around the house so I have a lot of household help. I do work around the house daily vacuuming, cleaning dresser tops, dishes, (I love to do dishes in the hot, soapy water), and I do our laundry. My husband also helps around the house because he loves a tidy house. He likes the house to look like no one has been there all day! My oldest is twenty-two (and moved out) so you have to figure I've been doing this housewife stuff for a lonnngggg time and have it down to a science.

I'm always available to my children and if they feel they're attention deprived any one of my four youngest boys (10-5) will plop themselves right down in my lap. I play games often with my five year old. Every night my husband and I go to our room at the same time. So the time I'm spending at the computer listing and answering communications is time I would spend watching tv or reading or some other leisure activity.

Time to homeschool: We school almost every day. My 15yos does SOS-he's self-taught and he works daily M-F at the lunch hour. My 14yod uses books and she's self-taught. My 10yos is pretty self-taught but will plop himself at my feet if I'm on the computer to ask me a question. I sit down daily with my 8yos and 6yos to do reading/phonics and math. My 5yos joins us when he wants. He's a late 5yo so was technically to young to do Kindergarten so I don't push him but am available when he wants to do book work.

Thanks Vikki for taking the time to explain this .... I'm really glad you posted about it. I've often wondered what it entails to buy/sell/have an eBay store, etc ...... I used to sell some of our own odds and ends on eBay before I started homeschooling and even did some TA selling for some of my relatives. I really enjoyed it but it started taking more & more of my time .... = ) It sounds like it works wonderfully for you & your home ..... that's so awesome!!! ; )
