Today I took my husband's Sunday School class for him. He teaches 3rd-5th graders. The lesson was on our abilities and using them for Him. And not only using those abilities but using them with our whole heart.
Today in church our Pastor made the remark that when you're doing the most menial of duties you're serving Jesus.
What do those two themes have in common? What ever we do we do it for the Lord. We clean our house for the Lord, we scrub a toilet for the Lord. We teach our children, sweep the floor, pick up dirty socks, chauffer, make phone calls, make dinner, meal plan.............all of those things we should be doing with our WHOLE heart for the Lord!
Colossions 3:23-Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men. (NIV)
So, if our husbands never thank us for keeping a clean house (although mine does), our children can't read even though we've tried every curriculum out there (been there done that), when the toilets get dirty again. It's okay! We're doing it for the Lord! We are being obedient and that is what counts. When I give account to the Lord for my attitudes, actions, and my daily duties I will know I have been obedient because I did them for Him.
One way that I have been able to help Him is to take our elderly neighbor shopping, pick her up for church on Sunday, take her to Burger King on the way home from church so she has a little lunch. This wonderful lady also happens to be a sister-in-the-Lord, that goes to my church. She feels as though she's putting me through a lot of trouble but how could I stand in front of the Lord and not have done my best for her?
'Grandma' as we call her passed out a few months ago and so has lost her driver's license. There is also talk of Alzheimer's. She told me today her son took her to look at an assisted living place where she can move to. She doesn't want to do that. We don't want her to do that. When I told my 9yos he said, "I don't want her to do that!" See this lovely lady bakes chocolate chip cookies for the men at church on Saturdays (she's using her ability), she hangs her clothes out on the line, she has the most peaceful of properties. (One man that was thinking about moving in next door to her came over to her front porch, sat down without saying a word and just sat silent for five minutes. She's thinking, "By golly, who is this fellow? He finally spoke and said, "Ya know, this is the most peaceful I've been in years." That's grandma though and that's her life. She has an old oak tree in the front with a tire swing, and a great big rock that little ones love to conquer. I don't want grandma to move. I want her to stay right where she is and be grandma. Maybe we can use some of our abilities and help her more...............
