Making Gluten Free Mixes Better: Bob's Red Mill GF Chocolate Brownies
If you have anyone in your house struggling to stay gluten free; you know that many of the pre-made mixes which make life so much easier are pretty lousy in the taste department. I happened on the idea of perking up the Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free Brownie mix on my own; and it was so good I decided to share it with you. The main problem with the mix seems to be a lack of chocolate flavor. To solve this problem; I simply added 1/4 C of Hershey's Baking Chocolate Powder and 1/2 C of chocolate chips. The taste improvement was huge; and I enjoyed the brownies as much as my little gluten free girl did! Now, I won't mind so much shelling out $5.50 per mix; because I know she will be enjoying brownies that taste wonderful.
I think these were even better then the "regular" brownie mixes we use!
Hi I was just looking through your site and love it. It is a good mix of topics for moms.
I saw your side bar with the momys blogs and that is so great. Where did you collect all of them from? If you want to add me, www.homeschoolblogger.com/brown
I have been blogging more recently and am trying to see what's new.
I would love to have that list on my sidebar too. How do I do that?

Not sure if you've got Trader Joe's stores where you are at but they've got an incredible Gluten Free Brownie mix that is around $3 and in my opinion doesn't need chocolate added though you can never have too much chocolate either. Here's their website page listing stores http://www.traderjoes.com/locations.asp
I haven't tried the BRM brownie or cookie mixes yet, though I get the BRM gf flour, rice flour, breads and other mixes. I REALLY want to try the new gf pizza mix...but haven't found it yet. Bummer. Anywhooo..back to brownies. Thanks for the cooking help...I'll have to try that! BRM does have a blander taste than some gf brands I've tried with a lot of their mixes. We use Pamela's chocolate cake mix for brownies and chocolate cakes. It's cheaper and tastes terrific! It also gives variations on the package for different ways to use the mix. Also...it's cheaper than the BRM brownie mix. I also saw someone posted about Trader Joe's on here. I haven't been to one yet, since the nearest is an hour away. But I hear the place is AWESOME for us gf people! So if you have one near you, give it a whirl!
Hey...have ya tried BRM's gf choco chip cookie mix? If so, does it too need modification for taste? I've been considering getting it at Krogers lately instead of making from scratch with the gf flour. Want to know if the mix is worth it. Thanks!
We haven't tried the chocolate chip cookie mix. I really like the Peanutbutter chocolate chip cookie recipe over at glutenfreecookingschool.com! If you comment over there, tell her I sent you :).
The bottom line is; We try not to insist on parent-led learning or gravitate toward child-led learning. We try instead to focus on God-led learning and ask for His input and perspective on every aspect of our home school. That way, when others fuss about what Dan and I are doing and make me second guess our decisions -- I can go back to our decision process and find God's fingerprints, reminding me that this is His way.
