I love scented candles and the season Fall makes me want to burn them even more. Its that cozy comfy smell that is just wonderful in my home! My all time favorite are Swan Creek Candles.
They have them free standing like the picture above or in a jar! They are the BEST smelling candles. You truly feel like you are smelling a great pot of coffee when you light the hazelnut (Mocha) This scent is my favorite but I love many of them. Pumpkin, gingerbread, crisp cotton and many more! When people visit and I have them lighted they always enjoy the scent and ask me what kind of candle it is. So I thought I would share one of my favorite things with you!

One of my first reviews for the The Old Schoolhouse Crew is the helpme2teach website. We were given a 3 month subscription to try out the site and review it.
Over 2000 Safe, Educational Links for Children, Parents and Teachers
Updated Daily
Pre-K through High School
Use as a Complete Curriculum or to find Supplemental Material
This site is a search engine type site. It gives you sites to go to on every area of study. So if your looking for American Goverment, you just click on the American Goverment link and it shows you many sites you can see to teach American Goverment.
Pros-things I liked about the site/ Its kid safe, your kids could look up sites and its a totally safe enviroment, I love the way they color code the sites. They will have a code on them letting you know what for preschoolers, elementary, or high schoolers. It would be a great site to help you save time, you go to this site and it leads you to the many that interest you. Its user friendly, I had a sign in problem and I emailed them and they fixed it right away with a email response. There are enough sites to put together a whole curriculum. Even with the membership fees, if your were on a tight budget and couldn't buy boxed curriculum, this would be a wonderful site to help you put together your own.
Cons- There are not a lot of Christian sites, no creation based learning- no lapbooks. However they are hoping to increase in this area very soon. If enjoy searching on the internet like I do or take advantage of some of the great sites homeschoolers have already put together, you can probably find the sites for free yourself, however for ones that are feeling overwhelmed with your time this would be a great investment. Homeschool moms sometimes forget that our time is worth something. If you are on a tight budget this would not be a must have site.
This is the subscription prices and they do take paypal.

I just LOVE Dove's new line Go Fresh! The body wash is my favorite! Put this on a loofah and watch it lather and smell Wonderful! The Grapefruit & Lemongrass is my favorite out of the ones I have tried! Even my young children love it when I let them use this, I can't tell you how wonderful the smell is. I look forward to the jolt it gives me after the shower. They have this in deodorant, body mist, the soap bar (which I like a lot too), and shampoo! You can see these at the website http://www.dove.com.

If you are doing a study on the US, this is a such a fun book! The Vice Presidents wife Lynne Cheney wrote the book and Robin Glasser's illustrations are WONDERFUL. The book takes you through each state and has fun illustrations to tell you fun facts about the states. We put this book in our book basket while we study North America in our geography! My son loves to look through it and he is quick to point out all the fun stuff. They have all the Presidents in it under the state they are from, where certain product is made (some of the fun stuff) and where all the landmarks of this great country are! She has also done a book similar with the same illustrator called America. I would love to check that one out!
Well-we are reading At Home in Mitford for the book club book at HappyAtHome! I read this book many years ago but have been wanting to read it again to refresh my mind on the characters so I could continue to read the series. There are so many that follow this one now! For the ones who read here often you know I usually don't read fiction too much. I have always had the attitude I should read books that help me in some area being time is limited and as much as I love to read there is not always enough time but lately with the burdens of life I feel some good fiction would allow some healthy escape and maybe just want the Lord wants for me now!
Anyway the first week's assignment was to read chapters 1-8. They want us to tell about our favorite characters in the book. This is so hard because all the characters are just wonderful and even the grumps bring something so wonderful to the story but I thought I would tell a few that really stand out to me.
Well I LOVE the preacher of course-Father Tim- He loves his town and his church. He gives all to this ministry God has given him, he is very understanding of his people even with their flaws! He has come to love this dog who loves him and its fun to watch the relationship of them two grow into something wonderful! The town loves him and looks up to him for sure, they gave him the greatest birthday suprise!
I also love Emma-she can be difficult at times but I can relate to her character too! She takes care of Father Tim as his secretary. She keeps him on task and is a real worker! You can tell she has a real respect for him and although its hard for her to show emotion you find yourself knowing that she has a soft side!
Miss Sadie- Not only is she a giving person, wow! But I love the fact that she has passion for what she wants, even in her older age. Not only does she want a nursing home built she wants all the bells and whistles in it as well. So that the people who live there can still enjoy life, great books, a fountain, a greenhouse, live birds. If only we did make nursing homes that exciting. Wouldn't it be great to do this in real life for our elderly?
And of course the town Mitford. Wouldn't we all love to live there? A small town with so much beauty and love? You can just picture yourself living there and knowing everyone! How wonderful it would be to walk around this wonderful place.
We read chapters 9-16 this coming week, come join us!

I read about this book quite awhile ago in the Old Schoolhouse Magazine. I love it. I have always wanted to garden but never had the confidence at all in doing so. I so admire all of your blogs out there that show off your gardens. This book really talks to the one who has never been brave enough to try it. You make your square foot boxes and you can plant anything. Flowers, fruit, vegetables, herbs-anything at all. I really like the way the author explains everything step by step. Another fun thing is your whole family can have their own boxes, so I could have a child that wants to do flowers in their box and I may plant tomatoes in mine, it sounds like a lot of fun. This is a major goal I have to start a square foot garden next spring. I also dream of having a herb garden someday! This author also has a curriculum out there on gardening and you can count it as a class, I would love to look into that! His website is http://www.squarefootgardening.com/

Well I know most of you have probably already seen this but if there is anyone out there that hasn't you MUST! My family finally was able to watch Faching the Giants this weekend, WOW what a movie. All three of my kids-9,6 and 4 just watched-they were all so into the movie. I don't know what it was that kept their attention. I expected my oldest to like it but I was suprised to see my others so interested. This is such a great faith booster movie. I could relate to so many things, the couple having many trials and just getting to a point in your adult life that you feel hopeless. The Kid David who loves the Lord but walks aroud defeated most of the time because of confidence and insecurity.
So many times when they do a Christian movie it has a cheesy feel, this one did NOT! It was great quality, there was only one scene I thought was a little borderline corny but any movie can have one scene like that. It is where one of the coach's is trying to teach David, the soccer start has to kick in the middle not to the side and he starts quoting scripture about the narrow gate, I don't know I thought that was a little stretching it.
I think what I loved what just imagining what life would be life if everyone was living Godly principles in every thing they did like this football team started to do. Imagine how wonderful life would be, everybody was doing their careers, running their churches and schools, sports teams, families, politicians, by the coachs guidelines. What an AMERICA we would have!
If you have not seen this movie run out and get it THIS WEEKEND, it is too good to pass up. It would be a great story for your children as well-to see what turning everything over to the Lord can do for their life!

Today I thought I would share the Language Arts (English) program we are using. In a previous review I talked about our spelling program called Sequential Spelling-you can find the review here.
We love the First Language Lessons by Jessie Wise, we used the 1st and 2nd grade book with my oldest and now my middle son is doing it. Its very short lessons on grammar, short fun stories for reading comprehension, poems to memorize, abbreviations and much more. The great thing about this book is the lessons are short and sweet and everything you teach you repeat three times. I find everytime I teach a subject that is 5-10 minutes a day my children learn that subject the best, there really is something to that short but good approach, especially with young children that can get so bogged down with information. Its a classical approach that repetion helps children really get it and it WORKS! This book is really fun too, my kids enjoy it, my oldest used to say I love the blue book-that's what he called it. I think if you can find a book to make grammar fun its a MUST HAVE!
We are now using their new 3rd grade version, my son is in 4th and that's suppose to be out later this year however the 3rd grade is a great place to start with the new books, its really just the start book for you if your child doens't have a strong background yet in grammar and studies show children don't retain those rules anyway until an older age so you should start with the 3rd grade version unless your child has a strong backgroud and has retained it! I will have to let you know later how we like it!

We LOVE James Herriott books. The great stories about a veterinarian's adventures with his towns people and their animals- the Treasury for Children is our favorite. Not only do I love the great stories about the horses and cats (tabbies are mentioned a lot and of course I'm biased toward them) and all the other animals but the illustrations are just beautiful, they bring the stories alive! You can just picture yourself there on a farm having the vet stop by and visit and having some cold lemonade while he visits with the cats laying at your feet! He now has a book on Labs I would love to get! Its on my wish list.
This is such a wonderful book for your young children and even 8-10 yr olds, well I'm an adult and I LOVE it so I guess its for any age that has a love of animals. This is for sure a book I will be saving for future grandhchildren when they visit!

I recently received a subscription to the Digital Old Homeschool Magazine to review! How fun!
I really was skeptical before reading my copy. I just couldn't imagine reading my favorite magazine on the computer and not in my hands. This is the magazine that I can't wait to open every month and read every article AND the ads. It is by far the greatest homeschool magazine I have seen! Could I really enjoy it in the same way on the computer?
Well I did! The pictures were colorful, and you can zoom in on any page for a closer look! My favorite thing was everytime you see a website, EVEN in the ads you just click on it and it actually takes you to the site, how great is that? You can look at all the pages in one screen so you can pick what you want to read in case you don't want to read it in order. If you own a laptop and take it with you a lot you can read it on the go! Another great thing is you don't have to store the magazine, you can just save the articles that interest you-I'm so bad about keeping all the magazines and telling myself I will go back later and tear out what I want to keep but never seem to get around to it. This way you can just store it and always have it and not have to organize a large amounts of magazines.
It is a truly wonderful way to read your magazine! You have to try it for yourself, you won't regret it! You can go here to get your own!

I just bought a bathing suit. I hate buying bathing suits-even when I was a nice thin woman I hated wearing them. I never felt they were modest enough, I thought it was crazy you had to feel naked just to go swim. Well now that I'm NOT a skinny woman I sure don't want to be wearing one, its even worse. So I decided I was going to get one this year I felt comfortable in and was very modest, I knew I would have to pay big for it but it was worth it if I was going to be in public with it. Well I found one on the Lands End website, it looked perfect. Now I didn't know how it would look on me since I don't look anything like the professional model that wore it for the website so I was still skeptical until I tried it on. I LOVE it. It is very modest (as modest as it can get I guess) and its so comfortable. It looks like shorts and shirt. It was 59.50 but I will keep it for years, even if I do good and lose some weight it should fit and well if I lose ALOT thats worth the reward of a new suit. If your looking for something comfy and modest this is it!

Today I'm reviewing the IF/Then chart and The Blessing Chart from doorpost. These are some great charts and they really help in your discipline and help you to stay calm when handing out the consequences. I had seen these for the first time at the doorpost booth at a convention but didn't think much of it. However when I read Terri Maxwell's book Homeschooling With a Meek and Mild Spirit I really became interested in the charts. She talks about her struggles with her temper when her children were younger and how the frustration came because sometimes the punishment seemed too easy or too harsh and never consistent. It was causing her to yell and not really know where to go somewhere with disciplining her large family. The if/then chart changed all that. It has the sin/bad behavior in one column, a scripture verse in the next column about that particular problem and then the consequence. So for example if you have a child who was caught lying you would take the child to the chart, read the verse together and give the consequence for lying. She didn't need to yell anymore. It was just you did this, this has to happen now. If they continue to argue then you go to the arguing problem. If you have never done this before and your children are used to you yelling, negotiating, giving in, etc. It will take awhile to adjust but if you are consistent and you don't lose your cool it really starts to be effective.
The Blessing chart has the same thing except it rewards exceptional behavior so when you catch your child doing great things you can have a little reward to encourage it. It doesn't have to be a gift. It can be 15 minutes later bedtime, extra snack, etc. Of course you don't want to reward for expected behavior but it is a great thing to reward really great things your kids do sometimes. Its really encouraging to them, especially in a character trait they need work in. My son has really struggled with greed lately, (really bad) We have really been working on it, I truly wondered if my husband or I was getting through and just recently I have really seen him putting himself second. He actually gave something to his brother today that he really WANTED because he knew it was something that meant a lot to his brother. Thats so exciting for a mom to see.
We laminated our charts so we can change the consequences and rewards when ages change, etc. My husband actually colored the black and white images so its really colorful now and the consequences and rewards are written in a black erase pen so they can be erased easily. They are in our hallway!

I thought it would be fun to review Tiany's new projects. What a gift her and her husband have on the internet! They have started a couple of things and I LOVE them both!
The first one of course is the Homeschool lounge, I know most of you know about this great resource but I thought I would share for the ones out there that haven't taken the plunge yet and made a page. The homeshool lounge is for homeschool parents only, which makes sense of course. It reminds you a lot of myspace without the bad stuff that comes with it. You can create your own page, decorate it with the colors that you love and truly make it personal using your own pictures and putting in some of your own music in. Tiany has thought of everything, for the ones who aren't creative in the designing sense (like me) she has all kinds of things you can chose to decorate it with. For the ones who are super creative in that area can do their own thing. You can add lounge sisters and chat and join fun groups just for us moms, how fun is that! She even has little buttons you can add to your blog, you can see mine on my sidebar. This is also great for the ones who don't have a blog and really don't want to put the time in that a blog takes. It is so much easier and your can write blog posts right on it. If you do have a blog you can link your RSS feed and people can read your current blog right on your page. This is great fun and you can meet so many people over there. I am the leader of the My Fathers World group so if you are a MFW user come over and join the group!
The newest thing these creative minds have come up with the homeschoolbar. You just go to the site and download it and it will be your toolbar. Its WONDEFUL! It has blogs(you can get your own added) news stories about homeschooling, great sites about homemaking, frugal tips, homeschool resources and more. It has things for the children in your home as well. Educational sites, library button, activities and fun. Make sure you stop over and download the bar for your own computer. You won't regret it!

I find most women either LOVE or HATE bath n body works. I think for the ones who hate smells and perfumes this isn't the store you run to but the ones who love fragrance and soaps and lotions in fancy bottles usually have a great time in this store. Even if you feel this line is too pricey for you, its usually a really fun store to just go in and INHALE! I love it, my budget doesn't usually allow too much spending here but it is a fun thing to get in my Christmas stocking and fun small gifts to put on list people ask me for at Christmas time! One of my favorite things in the store is their soap, but not just any of their soap-what I LOVE is the gentle foaming one. This one just lathers so much and so good, it comes in a great pump and big white suds just pour out into your hands. It doesn't have the constant drip like their other soap either, so you don't end up with a glumpy mess on the sink. You can get this in many fragances and colors. If you haven't tried the foaming one, pamper yourself just once and stop in and get one, actually you can get 3 for $10.00 always and if you blessed enough to have a factory outlet near sometimes you can get them much cheaper!

When I review toys I only like to review the ones that we really LOVE around here! And this is one of them. The Littlest Pet Shop. They have a zillion pets (dogs, cats, ducks, rabbits, mice, etc.) They are small and easy to carry around. My daughter really loves them. You can also get towns, amusement parks, the bakery and hospital. There are so many extras you can get buy my daughter's favorite is the pets themselves. She takes them everywhere. She does have a couple of the buildings that she received for Christmas and I will tell you they are so much fun. They have seats that move around by magnetics, they spin and move and even my boys will play with these with her. Okay I will admit, mom loves them too! Each pet usually comes with a dish of food, a pet toy, something that a pet would love! I would recommend this if your looking for a gift for a little girl in your life, they are great fun!

Today I am going to review the new Old Schoolhouse Planner! Heidi from ReviewsbyHeidi has given me a planner to review on my blog and the website. I am so excited! This was on my wish list for sure! The best part is I also get to give one away in a contest!!! I'm going to review it here and my next entry will be the contest details, I hope you all try to win! Its such a great planner.
The first word out of my mouth as I opened my planner was WOW! I heard how great this was but I don't think I realized how great it could have been until I saw it. It is AWESOME! This planner is by far the greatest one I have ever seen!
This planner is an ebook. The great thing about that is you can print off what you want and leave what you don't, the cover would be great to print off and put in a 3 ring notebook and you could put the rest of the book inside and have a great planner for school time. It has 247 pages in it, it's also interactive so you can work on the pages in your computer and print them off, wow-thats great.
It has everything you would imagine a planner to have. Calendars, charts, address pages, and dates to remember BUT it has so much more! So much more! It has field trip planning, sheets on your garden, the US Presidents and their wives, State and country capitals, budget, vacation planning, chore charts, Bible reading schedule, and prayer journal.
It also has some wonderful tools to help you at home. Menu planning, daily schedules, monthly homekeeping reminders, family health records, a sheet for the babysitter and through out your will find some great recipes. I'm telling you it has it all!
Of course no homeschool planner would be complete without pages to help you with your homeschooling. It has sheets on your curriculum, your schedule for the year, a measurement conversions sheet, a sheet on famous composers, and even a timeline of inventions. Throughout the whole planner there are teaching tips, anything from why its good to teach a foreign language to solving your science struggles.
If you have this planner you will have a homeschool and house notebook in one. The ones who put this together thought of it ALL! You can tell this was made from homeschool homemaking moms! They left nothing out. I can think of no better gift for yourself then this, it will help you be more organized and efficient and you will be able to keep all your records in one place. You don't want to miss out on this one.

Today I am going to talk about my Flylady Calendar. This is one of my favorite things, its one of those things I ask for every Christmas. I know there are many calendars out there but this one is a great for your Family Center to put all your important dates on for everyone in the family to see. I love it because it has huge blocks and you can fit several engagements on one date. It comes with stickers where you can label your cleaning zone by week and all of your special dates. I love this, you can get it at www.flylady.net.
I can't believe all the books that I have received lately with paperback swap! I have been organizing as you know and have donated some books as well as listed some on paperback swap so I have been getting several credits lately. I have a two page waiting list for certain books and some have been on there awhile. They are finally starting to pay off, I have really been getting several lately on my list. I know most of you are familar with paperback swap but for the ones that are not you list 10 books you are willing to get rid of and you automatically get 3 credits for books that are listed, you get them for free. The ones you request them from pay shipping and when you receive the book you mark it as received and the giver of the book gets a credit for a book. When you send a book you pay shipping. So the more books you have listed that get requested the more credits you will get. I just LOVE it! Here are some books I have received this year.
If you sign up because of my blog please put in my email and I will get one free book. You will find my email at the top of the page.

THE HORSE AND HIS BOY
CS LEWIS
Well we just finished The Horse and His Boy in the Narnia Series. I LOVED it! Of couse what Narnia book don't we like, right? We listened to this on audio CD, which was just so great-we had it in the car and just couldn't wait to go somewhere so we could listen to what was going to happen next. Audio books are such a great way to get some of those classics in that you just don't have time for. My husband enjoyed this so much that he decided we should have a couple of nights that we listen to a great book together as a family, like the old days of sitting around listening to the radio because its all people had. I bet so many memories were made that way! We want to start Prince Caspian so we can go see the movie!
I found this book a little harder to understand at first, I tried to play this for my son quite awhile ago and he just didn't seem to be getting any of it so I took it back to the library and we tried again recently. It made all the difference! I think its slower to get into at first unlike the two before it but once it gets moving I think its quite thrilling. I loved the characters in it, Shasta (slave boy)and Avavis(runaway girl) and the talking horses from Narnia. They brought so much to the story, learning about each ones background and past and why getting to Narnia was so important for each of them. There are many suprises in the story which I won't reveal in case you haven't read this one yet. There are also some exciting battles and many other characters they meet along the way that add so much to the story. And of course no Narnia story would be complete without Aslan himself, just like in the others, some great parallels to Christ. I love when Bree the talking horse just can't believe that Aslan is really a lion and Aslan is telling him, "Touch Me. Smell Me. Here are my paws, here is my tail, these are my whiskers. I am a true Beast." It was like hearing the story of doubting Thomas!
The owners of Sonlight say this is their favorite in the Narnia series, you don't hear much about this book compared to the others and there may never be a great Motion Picture of it but in my opinion there should be. This is an excellent story, make sure if your reading Narnia-you don't miss it!

I LOVE this mop, we bought it from the clean team. Its called the sh-mop. It has a cloth over the bottom and you can rewash the cloths after you are done mopping. The mop turns and swivels, so its easy to get under the cabinets and furniture. It has a really wide bottom so it covers a lot of floor in one swipe! The clean team sells a cleaner that is all natural, free of chemicals to use with the mop as well, however you can use whatever cleaner you like. They recommend stopping up the sink with the stopper and dipping the cloth in that since the mop is so wide and won't fit in a standard bucket. Even my husband loves this mop, you know when you get a man to love a cleaning tool, it has to be good. LoL. This is what their site/catalog says about it!
