Sneak Peek: Christmas Pictures (and *gasp* I'm in one!)

Posted in PhotoBlogging
I tell ya, sometimes I think it would be worth the money to pay a *real* photographer to take our pictures. It was an all day ordeal and I didn't even get any WOW pictures. But, I will settle for what I have because I am NOT going to do this again!

I started the day by bathing Nooshie (what we call our husky, Annushka) and got Kenton to do Ceph (Bucephalus). I wanted to try & get them in a picture or two and wanted them looking clean. Nooshie's whites get yicky after all her digging and chewing through extension cords that *were* powering our outdoor Christmas lights and chewing on our house and whatnot. Ceph never *looks* very dirty since he's all black, but, well, I still wanted him washed. That was quite an ordeal.

Then I picked out all of the children's clothes. Couldn't find some shoes and after searching for a half hour or so I decided the children were going to be sans shoes in the pics.

Started tearing apart my living room. I have to make room for my stuff. Kenton & the boys helped (well, Kenton did anyway). He even got out my backdrop stand, backdrop, light, reflector and other things while I put hot rollers in the girls' hair.

Then I jumped in the shower. After I was done getting ready I did the boys' hair, took the hot rollers out of the girls' hair and styled it and then came down and hooked up my light to my camera, did my custom white balance and got the settings adjusted for exposure. I much prefer shooting in natural light outside. It's a hassle, I tell ya!

Now you're getting a little sneak peek. If you know my parents, you cannot tell them that I got a family picture of us! It's supposed to be a surprise! That's the only thing they've asked for for Christmas & I told them I didn't think I'd have time- that it was enough of a hassle doing 5 children and I was pregnant and blah blah blah. I look too fat. Wait three years till I lose some weight. Excuses. Basically, I hate having my picture taken. But I thought I'd try it for them & if I got one I liked okay enough, I'd give it to them for Christmas. My mom even called tonight- she knew I was taking pictures today and said, I know you don't want me asking, but I just want to know, did you happen to get a family picture? I told her that it was crazy, that it was hard enough getting a pic of 5 children and we got the dogs in a few too. So I didn't lie, because I didn't actually say, "No, I didn't", however I did lead her to believe that I did not get a family photo. :) (the last family picture they have of us is when Millie was a baby, which means Josiah's not even in it!)

This was fun. I set my camera on Gabe's school desk, set the auto timer, focused, pushed the shutter release button and RAN to get into my place with my family. I do have a tripod, but it's a cheapo Walmart tripod. I've had one snap in two already and did NOT want that happening with my camera and NICE (expensive!) HEAVY lens. Don't trust it. Anyway, the children thought that it slightly amusing seeing mom have to run and jump in place to get in the picture. Hee-hee. Here's the best of the 4 or 5 I took of all of us. I wish Alek wasn't so slouchy and Gollum looking and Gabe was smiling and some chins were down and I know you can hardly see Ceph, but oh well. It's going to have to do:

Now here's where I need your help! We are going to print this off and send it along with the Christmas cards to announce our pregnancy to family and some friends. So far the only ones that know about it are our parents (and my cousin Kim, who reads my blog sometimes! Hi Kim!). But I am wondering if/how this can be improved? I am SO NOT creative when it comes to wording things in a clever way. If you can think of something better, PLEASE let me know- and quickly! I want to get these done on Monday (hopefully)!

Can you read it? If not, it says:
Bun in the Oven
(for best results)
-Hand of God             -Husband and Wife
Preheat oven to 98.6 degrees. Mix in lots of prayer, rest and good nutrition. Let bake for 9 months. Remove from oven around July 3rd and enjoy for a lifetime!
Yield: half a dozen (yield may vary)

I put "for best results" because as you know, you don't HAVE to have a husband and wife to have a child.

So here are the rest:

And then Josiah thought he'd entertain his siblings with his fabulous "go to sleep while taking Christmas pictures" trick:

I had to perform Photoshop head swapping surgery on someone not looking at the camera in this picture. Can you tell who?

The pyramid/Christmas tree picture I imagined did not turn out. It appears that Josiah is afraid of heights and Alek is not quite as strong as his younger brother, Gabe, which is why the lighter, younger sister is on his shoulders instead of Gabe's.

Not at all exciting. But I LOVE HIS LIPS! (now picture Larry singing the lips song)

This was Kenton's idea & I loved it! He was trying to make them into a star. I just need to be about 3 feet taller to get them all in the picture while standing on the chair (or maybe I should've just let Kenton take it....).

Got milk? Cookies for Santa... but since they don't believe in Santa and they do believe mom when she says they can eat the cookies after just a few shots, they were getting a bit anxious.

They've got the go ahead! And they're off!

How many can I shove in my face at a time?!?!!?

Sorry, Santa. The children ate your cookies.

But not this one, oh no. She's *completely* innocent! She's an angel! Never does *anything* wrong!

That's all there is, there isn't- anymore.

It's a great family picture. Really. Five kids, two dogs, a timed picture -- and you all look happy. THAT, my friend, is success.
I love the picture of the star. I think that one is my favorite.
Great job. Your mom is going to be thrilled.

Congrats on the pregnancy!! I have missed seeing your blog. Here I am. Baby woke up at 5 am wanting to play today...so he's in his excersaucer and I am getting some much missed time at the computer! ;)
I LOVE your pictures. They are better than ours, and we DID pay a "real" photographer. Wishing YOU lived closer!!
If I had to guess, I'd say it's your older daughter you did the head-surgery on...am I right? Whoever it is, you did a good job, because it looks very natural.

Take care!

Got here from the MOMYS Digest. LOVE the pictures. I love the recipe too. I don't think you need to change or add anything. It's great. My favorite picture is the one where they are laying down on their bellies - love that look. Merry Christmas

Hi Alyssa-

Too cute as always! I love the announcement. Way too cool!

If there is a next time for us after this one is born, we are going to have to do something creative. I was so shocked at our friend's and families response this time. Next time, we just won't tell them! :)

I love the PJ's. Where did you get them? Too cute. The star picture is super. And Millie is a ham. :)

Wonderful pictures. I love your family picture. You look so beautiful! You have a super family there!

Have a blessed day!

What talent, hard work and precious family!
I love your family photo! I expected you to be at the outer edge since you were trying to get in quick. Just the fact that you were able to get down, in the center, and place Josiah on your lap while all the other including the animals stayed in their poses is outstanding!

I also love the announcement! I cannot think of a thing I would change! I am asking permission to use that if they Lord ever blesses us again that way!

All of the other pics are sooooo cute too! Mary laughed and laughed at the milk mustaches picture!

Very precious! I am so glad you took the time (when you do have plenty of reasonable excuses) and shared them with us too!

Blessings to you! Love, Eva

You are too funny getting the Christmas photo all done up right...I chose to do ours after church, no one matched and there is a stray cat being held on some of our photos but my objective is 5 pictures and one has to work. I do the same thing....self timer, run real fast, and who cares about white balance!!!...we're all in the same picture. I mean beggars can't be choosers!!!
I have a friend who took all day to get their's done. She said she'd NEVER do that again. (Yea right)
And I love your announcement. It's perfect.
Check out our picture at my blog.

You did it again! Incredibly fantastic pictures! You never cease to amaze me.
We just had our family photos taken, too. Now, I thought it was a big deal getting our big family all here at one time with coordinating clothes and even, like you, shoes! But to think I would be in charge of taking the actual picture, too? Now, that's mind boggling!
I love, just love, the striped p.j. pictures. If their not the cutest pics under the sun, I don't know what is. The colors, the poses, the expressions, everything. Your amazing!
Antoinette

(p.s. thanks for including the family picture with yourself in it. Your mother is going to love it. Rachel once asked me why you never had your picture in any photos. I told her my theory, which was: "Alyssa is a perfectionist. I can tell that she is. Therefore, she "thinks" she does not weigh just right, but I am absolutely positive that she really looks terrific but because of her perfectionism standards, in her mind, she will not share a picture." That is exactly what I said, and therefore, I must be very good at theories because after looking at your picture, I was absolutely right! You look great!

I went and took a bath and while soaking, I started thinking about your beautiful pictures and remembered I didn't answer your questions.

#1 About the witty card to send announcing the birth of your baby, I never knew (until now) that there was a witty way to do that. Very clever! If you think I'm underestimating this, look at my profile where everyone else has a paragraph about themselves. Or just look under my avatar at the right hand side bar where the same info is listed. About Me - "My farm and my home." Or how about my name - when I was signing up for this blog, I couldn't think of a thing for a user name. All I could come up with is "haflingerhorses". lol Now just what kind of picture of a person do you conjure up when you leave a comment from "haflingerhorses" ?

#2, No, I really can not guess which head got switched. You have to tell us now.

#3 Where everyone seemed to be partial to the p.j. star picture, my favorite is the one you thought that wasn't to exciting (the lips). Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I thought that one was soooooooo cute. I could just see it on the front of a Christmas card. All the cookie ones were cute, I wouldn't be able to pick.

#4 I do hope your taking lots of pictures of yourself with the kids (even if you aren't posting them) because your kids are going to cherish those pictures when they are older.

#5 And I have a question - did you go to college and major in photography? I was telling my mom all about your abilities and she suggested that you must have learned this at college.

Dec. 18, 2007 - We finally get to see a pic of you! Yeah!

Posted by seasonsmom
Alyssa! I was just wondering when are we going to get to see you too! ANd it happened so soon! Now I see who the girls look like! Oh my! Carbon Copy indeed! YOu did an awesome job to look so rested in the pic like the other bloggers already commented. You need more creative ideas on baby announcement! I You got it girl! I thought it was absolutely the most creative thing! I was trying to figure out how you made it. I wondered if you only created the card separately or even the apron and the bun too! Hmmm, maybe you can share that one with us later one day!
I think you changed Annushka's face (well, whatever you call an animal's face) head maybe a better word. But it's really hard to tell, you did a great job on it, I can't believe you are even asking. I don't have a favorite. They are all great pics, every one of them special. I wouldn't be able to pick one if I had to. Keep on teaching and amazing us, girl! Go, Alyssa! Natalie

Hello Alyssa!
It seems like forever since I've visited. How are you? These photos are just fantastic! Love them. Your parents will be so surprised to have a family photo of you. It is fun seeing one with you in it. I wondered if you took it or had someone else do it for you. I'm sure the kids had a laugh with mom running into place. These all look so great!

love your pics. We just got a new camera and tried the "lets take a picture of ourselves with the timer" bit. Let's just say that after several tries, we don't care anymore about who is not looking at the camera :-). Your pics are awesome and i'm going to steal some of your grouping ideas!!
