What Do YOU Call Grasslands? Savanna, Prairie, Steppe, Campos, Plain, Pampas?

Well, it all depends on where you live (er, or where the grassland is located)! At least that's what I my children learned in school today!

Alek & Gracie are staying with their grandparents for 2 nights. It's that time of the year again- assessment testing! And since my in-laws only live 5 minutes from where the children have to test as compared to a 45 minute drive for us, and since they are morning people and we are not, we've always given the grandparents the privilege of being in charge of the children for a couple of nights and getting them to their tests. So the atmosphere is a bit different without them here.

Gabe and Millie are school buddies this year. They are doing Winter Promise's Animals and Their Worlds program and this week, as you can probably guess, we're studying the animals that live in the grasslands. Since *my* workload was lighter than usual with Alek & Gracie being gone, we got around to a hands-on project today! Gabe and Millie made Pop-Up Prairie Dogs! They LOVED this project and have played with them quite a bit. They are trying their best to keep them in immaculate condition because they cannot wait to show their older sibs when they get home tomorrow. Their prairie dogs are taped to a popsicle stick and by pushing it up or pulling it down, they can make their prairie dogs pop out of their holes to see if the coast is clear or back in quickly if danger is spotted. They're pretty cute. Let me show you.

Here's Millie's having a peek around:

And after seeing a vicious Siberian Husky (a natural predator for the prairie dog, I'm sure), it quickly went back into its hole:

And Gabe's having a peek around:

Crazy thing on Gabe's head:

Decorating their homes with grass:

Millie's again (just because I actually got to get out & take some pics and took way too many):

And one of just Millie:

I've decided this IS our last week of school. Even if the baby's not born until my due date (July 3rd) and even if it rains every day until then, we will be stopping this Friday. I am very ready for a break, and we have a new routine to get used to- chores! I'd like to get everyone used to that soon. At least we got a good head start for our next school year, and I know what to expect from this new curriculum.

Off to fold some clothes!

Love that last pic of Millie best of all!

How nice that you can get a couple days to focus on the youngers and let Grandma & Grandma do the testing duties. That's great for Alek & Gracie too, to have that time with their Grandparents. Although I tend to take it for granted sometimes, I am so thankful for my parents' involvement in my kids' lives. When I was growing up, both sets of gparents lived more than a day's drive away (in opposite directions), so we saw each set about once every other year. I am glad it is different for us- all three generations benefit greatly from having gparents nearby.

Hope their testing went well! Glad we don't have to do that in MI.

Isn't it funny what we...oh, I mean they learn when homeschooled (C:

I learned something the other day and I can't remember what it is now, but yah, I learn something new everyday.

And as always I love your pics. Can you share with me briefly your tips for taking shots at sunset? I took a few last weekend, and some were okay, but many had funky spots, etc...on them.

The little prairie dogs are cute!:) I'll bet they loved that. They're both just getting so big, can't believe that 's Millie and not Gracie.
Great job on all you got cooked up(that you mentioned in your last post)for after the baby. I'm glad you're taking it easier in a week and stopping with school for a bit--that'll be good for you! :)

Jun. 17, 2008 - Looks like a beautiful day!

Hi Alyssa~

It looks like the kids had fun today out in the beautiful weather! What a relief it must be to call it a day on the schooling right now. We have 4 1/2 weeks left of our school year, and then a 4-5 week break - I think I need it more than they do! The assessment tests Alek and Gracie are taking - are they a yearly state requirement? Could you administer them at home? I had thought they were more of the independent variety. Was I mistaken? You know my questions, my friend... :)

I hope you are feeling well, and continue to be so. I'm keeping you in my thoughts and prayers for an uneventful birth, and a beautifully healthy baby!

I love that picture of Millie sitting in the grass! (It did not escape my notice that she's wearing long pants and a long sleeve shirt in the middle of June - it looks wonderful to someone hiding from the 115 degree heat right now!!)

Have a wonderful evening and a lovely week!
Love,
Shani
