• Sep. 26, 2005 - Acronicta hesperida [Noctuidae]

Posted in Daily Log

We found a strange caterpillar today and were able to identify it as Acronicta hesperida[Noctuidae] thanks to The Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center.  Unfortunately we have not been able to find much more information on it.  We did, however, go to www.enchantedlearning.com to study then label a worksheet on caterpillar anatomy.

For math today, we reviewed our multiplication tables by watching the School House Rock movie. After that we got to add negative and positive numbers.  I didn’t remember going over negative numbers with Chelsey last year, but she says we did.  We must have, because she picked up the whole concept so quickly!  I’m pretty excited, because now I know for sure that her mind has really opened up to abstract thinking and we’ll be able to delve deeper into math and other subjects.   All in all it was a great homeschooling day.

Neat! We've been seeing quite a few woolly bear caterpillars, too. We also found a huge ugly spider in the house. My husband, who is afraid of spider's, decided to try to herd it out of the house and flicked it. I thought it landed either on me or the carseat and we searched frantically. We finally found her and put her in a jar to watch for awhile. She wasn't in there 10 minutes before starting to make a nest. So now we have that sitting on top of the computer to see what happens. Will they hatch? How long will it take? I don't even know what kind of spider it is...I'd never seen one quite like it. Can't get a good picture of her in the jar, and I am NOT letting her out just for pictures. Maybe we could release her outside and keep the egg case...

I love to watch spiders! Unfortunately, the only spiders I know even a little about are jumping spiders, hobo spiders, black widows, and brown recluses, but I don't know anything about any of their breeding habits. A good resource on spiders is: http://www.arachnology.org/ . Good luck with your spiderlings! :)

Thanks for checking out my blog! My husband's arachnophobis seems to have gotten the better of him, as I see our jar is gone. I need to ask him what exactly he did...I can't see him releasing it. Maybe its out in the shed?

I don't know much about Abeka except that a lot of people really like it. That is one thing I like about the Principle Approach...it isn't really a curriculum, per se, and it can be utilized with other resources to make the prep work a little easier. I use Singapore mat, but at this point am doing my own curriculum in everything else. Next year we'll begin with Mighty Works of God for history and Judah Bible Curriculum for bible.

I enjoy your blog...we just found a caterpillar I can't identify and it appears to be pupating...it must be a moth since it is spinning a coccoon?
