Choosing a Major in the 8th Grade
Wow! It's hard to believe that some school districts actually believe that choosing a specialty in the 8th grade is good for children. Children do need time to explore their passions, but most importantly they need a good solid foundation. People need flexibility because the job market is always changing. The wider and more solid the base a person has the more flexibility they will have. It is easier to change from say art history to pre-med if you already have the basics in place such as biology, chemistry and anatomy, but if your school doesn't require those for an art history major, you will already be behind. To have a good base, students need a good foundation in language art including literature, math, history, science, geography, languages, the arts, (my homeschool also includes the Bible but that wouldn't go over in public school) and then time to explore what ever they are interested in this week or this month. Allow a kid to be a kid! For more info about this see Spunky's Blog .
