I wanted to add a little more about notebooking. I have been visiting a site regularly and absolutely love it! It's called Notebooking Pages (click). The woman who runs the site has been very given. She has TONS of free pages that you can down load to use in your notebooks. She also has many pages to sell. I feel they are very reasonable priced and I feel they are very well done. She has a special that if you buy the basic plus notebooking package (see her site for info) first, then you get a discount on future packages. I own all of the notebooking packages except her newest one. I am going to wait until after Christmas since it is a little more expensive than her other ones have been and with good reason. The package has over 1000 pages, so I think it is still a real bargain. I've looked at the samples that she provided and absolutely loved them. So I planned to get them soon after the holiday season. Most of her packages are under $20.00. A great way to see if you like her stuff is to try her samples and see if they work for your family. On Notebooking Pages, she also gives a lot of information on how to start notebooking. So if you’re a newbie, it's a great place to get info. She also provides a gallery where you can see some of her children's work. They are so good!!! Seeing her kids work is one of the reasons I decided to give notebooking a try. I am really glad I did. In just a short while, my son's writing has come ALONG way. If you are not familiar with notebooking, I would really suggest it. It is a great way for kids to internalize the info they are studying. There are a lot of great websites out there to help you get started. There is no one correct way to do it, because it is as individual as your family. Some key things to remember: 1. Encourage them to do their best on it. 2. Show it around. It is a great way for family and friends to see that, yes, your kids really are learning something and the notebooks look so impressive that it will probably give homeschooling a boost up in their eyes. Plus if your kids know your going to show it off, they may work harder on it and neater. 3. Don’t go correcting their mistakes. This is discouraging. It is better to just note their mistakes and work on them at another time. Such as spelling mistakes can be added to their spelling words. If they wrote a sentence grammatically incorrect, type it out how they wrote it and have them fix it as part of grammar class. If you do it directly in their notebooks it will make them look messy and they may be more embarrassed to show them off. Notebooks should be used for encouragement. Now that don’t mean you let them scribble out just anything, but just don’t be too picky. 4. Allow your kids to make them colorful. Give them time to draw pictures to go along with their writing. Don’t try to short cut this part of it because you feel they could be spending their time doing “real work”. The drawing is part of it. 5. If your kids are nervous about drawing pictures because they don’t think they can draw, then it might be a good time to invest in a few basic drawing books. The Draw Write Now series is a good one for some basic stuff. 5. If they are notebooks that you are going to treasure forever, then protect them. Put the pages in page protectors. As with anything I write, please investigate it for yourself before you invest in anything. What is right for my family, may not be right for yours, but I would encourage you to at least research this subject. Some previous blogs on notebooking that I wrote are: Notebooking Sites! and Notebooking!
Enjoy!
