BFS Assignment #13 - Capture YOur Uniqueness
Posted in Blogger Friend School
How am I unique? That's a hard one because I've never really considered myself very unique. I guess the most glaring things to the world would be that I'm a born again Christian and a homeschooler. To the homeschooling world, I'm starting to feel unique because I ONLY have TWO children. One thing that does make a little unique is both of our children are special needs. I have a new appreciation for people who are raising children with severe handcaps. I am fortunate, in that my children are not severe. However, there was a time I was averaging at least 6 medical appointments a month, sometimes more. Some of our appointments have taken up to a full day. I have sat in an Orthopedic Surgeon's office for over 5 hours and that was after an 1 1/2 hour trip there and 1 1/2 hour to get home counting stops. My littliest one has had more specialists than most adults and has had more medical tests than I have. I am very fortunate, though, he could have been much more severe. God has been very good. Our oldest we are still trying to manage his issues and I don't think we have completely gotten to the bottom of them yet, but I think he will be fine in the long run. Because of all this, I have more understanding in what families goes through when they have a child with physical or mental issues because I have had one of each. One day, maybe God will lead me to use that compassion but right now I have to focus on my own family. But who knows? Only God!

Thanks for stopping by my blog the other day! I'm glad I'm not the only one that can't always do the "fun stuff" as much as we'd like to. I'm going to try & do better though!
What kind of disabilities do your children have, if you don't mind me asking? You sure have spent a lot of time in doctor's offices.
We went through that with my very smack dab in the middle child. He had amblyopia (lazy eye) that started up suddenly & the only pediatric opthalmologist is an almost 2 hour drive away. When that all first started, we were there at least once a month. (he's had 2 surgeries and although he has poor eyesight, his lazy eye has been corrected, thank God!)
Love, Alyssa... whose brain's getting fuzzy cuz I really need to get to bed!

Hello. I enjoyed reading your BFS assignment. I need to get mine done. I only have 1 special needs child and I am pushed to my limits at times. I cannot imagine having 2. The Lord knows what we can handle. I have a notebook question too. We are about to study the colonial period. What is your top 1 or 2 suggestions for me as a new notebooker for that period?
Thanks.

One of our children was very sick a few years ago and we had many dr. visits. I can relate to the many hours spent driving and waiting in dr.'s offices.
Thank you for your comments left on my blog about the adoption. These past few days have been a challenge, but I know that the Lord is with me and is sustaining me.

Thanks for visiting my blog! After reading yours I see we are quite similar in a lot of ways. We've done a unit on the ancient world using Story of the World and Usbornes Encyclopedia of World History. It was great to be able to put a picture to what we had been learning. If you haven't already, you should look at Usbornes Visitors Guide to the Ancient World and Time Traveller. Both are very interesting. My kids had a lot of fun reading through them!
As well my youngest faces several challenges. As well as having Epilepsy, doctors have labelled her moderately - profoundly developmentally delayed. Our days can be a challenge! But, she is generally the happiest, swetest child I could ever hope for. Like you. I believe God doesn't give us more than we can handle.
Whew - I hadn't meant to leave such a long comment!! *lol*
Do you mind if I add you to my friends list?

My sister has Cerbral Palsy - this was a challenge for my mother, but for me, it has opened my eyes and heart to people who are different - because we are all different.
My sister had a pin which she wore with pride - "I was born this way, what's your excuse?"
She never minded children staring at her, or asking her why she was in a wheel chair - because they were honest and curious. What really hurt was the adults who looked away, or walked away.. for they were curious, but weren't honest enough to ask - or treat her like a real person.
Be blessed my sister in Christ, for your children - no matter what the uniqueness the Lord has blessed them with, are precious.

That is great that you are able to see down the road where you might be a blessing to someone who is going through something similar. That is great insight.
I have had a terrible situation happen in my life and one of my thoughts and focuses was that I hope that I can help someone down the road. And praise God He was able to use me.
