Prayer Request
Could you guys please pray for our family? I have mentioned before about my son having ADHD and OCD. He unfortunately has a lot of issues that need to be worked out. We are taking him to a Christian Counselor and it has not really gone too well so far. We have had him in treatment for about 10 months for anxiety (the OCD) and he just doesn't seem to be responding. His counselor is now suggesting we put him in public school with an IEP. Keep in mind she is a former school teacher and her kids went to Christian School which we could not afford if we wanted to. I am dead set against him going to public school. I do not feel it would help him and I really feel strongly about homeschooling (in our situation). Unfortunately, my husband now has some doubts. He is not real involved in the homeschool process and does not know that much about it and he is concerned about the stress on me with dealing with all the issues our son has. My son, does not want to go to school and said he can behave and he will prove to everyone that homeschooling is the best for him, but it is not that simple. If he could just turn off the problems, we wouldn't be where we are at. To make matters worse, my son will be in middle school next year and he is a little immature. Going into a new middle school, with an IEP and immature (and small for his age) is not something I want to see my child go through.
Could you guys please pray that my husband and I have the strength to help our little guy, that our hearts will not be swayed by misleading forces and that our family finds harmony in the middle of chaos. I would appreciate it. Thank you in advance.

Mar. 26, 2007 - I Have, and Will Pray

My youngest son seems to fit the bill for something called NonVerbal Learning Disorder.
He has been in the Public System (I posted about it in I'm Not In Blogger Friend School) for half of one year, but I agree with you that the worst place,it seems, for these boys is in the system where they have the hardest time.
I also know things go well with me when I listen to my husband's point of view ... the boys ended up in school because I was worn out emotionally. God was just as much in that as He is with us now as we homeschool.

Yes, I will be praying for your decision. It's not an easy one. I fully agree, the PS is last place your DS needs to be.

Mar. 26, 2007 - Clarification

I do want to clarify something. I am not saying that there is never a time to send kids to school. Obviously, if God leads someone to that decision, then they need to follow God. We even considered receiving help from the schools for our littliest one so we could get physical therapy (Luckily, we did not have to go that route) for him. In this case, though, I do not feel it would be helpful, but only harmful. My oldest gets very influenced by the kids around him and he has been somewhat sheltered. He is immature (ADHD does that sometimes) and he's small for his age. He will be 11 this summer and only weighs 65lbs. I have felt very strongly about homeschooling my children since my son's second grade when I went through a lot of self doubt and questioning. I feel God laid it on my heart that I was to continue homeschooling my children and if anything that feeling has just grown. I wanted to clarify this because I know some people have had reasons to put their children in school and I didn't want anyone to feel I was judging them because each family has to make that decision for their family.

I am praying and will continue to pray. I can see how the public school issue would be hard. I pray for strength, guidance, wisdom and peace for you and your famil.

I'll certainly be praying for your son and for you as a couple to be directed together! I do understand about living with OCD as my dh has been diagnosed with it two years ago! (Some of us knew for years that he has had it most of his life, but he was only able to admit it two years ago! Trust me your son's future wife will thank you one day for getting him the help he needs!! My MIL and FIL just told me that dh was weird and never acknowledged that he needed any help! It is much harder to combat after 39 years of habit forming!!!) My dh was on the fence about home schooling when we began, but in the past couple of months he has told me that if they make it illegal here in England we will simply move to America so we can continue!! So hubbys can come round to the idea with the Lord's help. Be encouraged!! And thanks for your comment and well-wishes on our eiffel tower adventure!

And my prayers are with you. I've always felt that of all times to homeschool, it would be best if ALL middle schoolers were at home with the people who love them.
OCD thrives on routine. I can't help but fault your counselor for taking him out of his normal routine and suggest that you stick him in a completely unfamiliar situation surrounded by strangers (and not them most sensitive strangers at that). It sounds like money is an issue here, but if I were you I would invest in a second opinion before you make such a major change in your son's life.
But that is just my humble opinion. (If it means so much to your husband, tell him I do have a B.A. in Psychology.)
Prayers and Peace,
Cristina

I know more than anyone that sending your problems to public school just gets you more problems! Oh, I will pray for you! I think I'd get another counselor, if you feel so led. We are counting the days here until Grace is home. I still feel as if the Lord was in our decision and He has blessed us through remaining under the trials. But if I had known, I would have kept her home. Oh my heart aches for you!

If you are interested contact my husband and I at chatkat@bellsouth.net - we are dealing EXACTLY with some similar issues - but we refuse to use the "labels" everyone has - I would prefer that you contact us privately and we can talk.
