Summer Plans
Am I the only one who plans to torture my kids by doing school over the summer? I would love to hear what everyone is planning for their summer. I normally do not do year around school, but this year has been really difficult for us and I just don't see where we have a choice. My son (ds10) has had days off throughout the year just because his health problems made it difficult to get work done. As it is he can not go out everyday to play and when he does go out it can only be for a few hours or we have horrific "meltdowns", so I figure we can get caught up, if he's going to be stuck in the house anyways.
Little One will just continue as always. If he wants to do work, great, if he doesn't, no pressure. I figure he's not "officially" in K until fall and as long as he is progressing steadily, I do not need to get pushy about his lesson. Right now he knows his ABCs, can write a good deal of them, can count almost to 30, is starting to add 2 and 3 numbers together, knows his shapes, understands relational words like big and bigger, understands words like behind and under, and is learning his address. He also learns alot from tv. Lets see... he has told me that reindeer live in Lapland, said "mommy the tower looks like the one in France" and said "when there is a fire you crawl on the floor under the smoke" and preceeds to show me how this is done. He's 4 1/2 so I don't see any reason to really force schooling when he is doing that well. So the main concentration of school work is going to be on my oldest who is also very smart but just has too much going on in his head right now and it's causing "issues".
I've been trying to come up with my goals for this summer so we have a road map. I feel like we are floundering too much, so here goes.
Writing: I would like him to be able to write a
good paragraph by the end of
summer.
Spelling: Continue to take words that he has
misspelled from his writings.
Math: Continue to go through 5th grade
math.
History: Finish Greece, Rome and Egypt.
Science: Animals
Reading: Continue Pathways
I plan to lighten the load some, like we probably will not be doing as much in history as I had planned but he will be covering this time period again in 9th grade, so if we skip a little bit, it's ok. In science I was going to do Apologia's Zoology 1& 2, but I think I'm going to do mostly unit type studies instead.
Some other plans include hubby has a vacation next week and we are going to get some work done around the house. We are also hoping to take the kids to the zoo. Little One has never been and my older one has not been since he was 3 or 4. We wanted to wait until Little Ones health improved so he could enjoy it better. It would have stunk last year going while he was still in his brace. I'm also hoping to get some swimming in and maybe some more swim lessons for my oldest one. Our movie theater does a cool thing each summer, one morning a week they show a free kids movie. They also encourage the kids to write a book report and the ones who do get their name in a drawing for prizes. Hopefully they will have some suitable movies for the kids to see. They usually do. Some I won't take my kids too, but usually I can find a few that I don't mind. We will probably be doing out library program again this year. They put the kids names up who read certain amount of hours and list them under their school. What's cool is they have a separate section for homeschoolers. So my kids can put their names by their friend's names. Ok, I'm rambling now! Of course it is 1:30 in the morning, did I really think I could write a coherent post at this time?????
I would love to hear what your plans are this summer and are you going to continue to school or give your kids (and yourself) a break.
Btw... If there is a really strange comment on this post tomorrow morning just ignore it and I will remove it when I get up. Someone was going through the "Last 100" list and leaving a really weird anti- Christian comment on each of the blogs. It was really, really long so I didn't take the time to read it all, but it was not good. My other site got hit already. Hopefully HSB got it taken care of, but I thougth I'd add this just incase. So if you had a really weird comment on your blog this morning, know that you were not alone!

May. 31, 2007 - Summer Schedule

We're planning to continue on a reduced schedule for much of the summer. My ds (6) is so into dinosaurs that I've decided we will spend our summer in a dinosaur unit. I've planned on 2 days a week, and a 7 week unit. I've kind of compiled a lot of different stuff from various websites, books, etc. And I hope to do a lapbook, though we've never done one? (If you've done them, can you tell me - do you usually work on it a little every week, or do you make one at the end of the unit?) We've got some science, math, art and just plain old fun activities planned.
In addition to the dinosaur unit, I plan to do math a couple of days each week, lots of reading, including focused attention with dd (4 1/2). She's doing well but would benefit from a bit of focused attention.
I also have some missionary studies we'll probably work through. The kids have asked to make a pop up card, so we'll do that, and try a bit of piano. Ds tried in the fall, but we weren't disciplined enough to really make an effort at that time. I also want to do some cooking projects with them and take a few day trips to area sites I've never seen.
And then finally, swimming lessons and a mini-soccer camp/lessons for ds.
Whew! I'm tired just thinking of all of it! I think my main goals for the summer are: continue learning (don't let the thinking muscles atrophy with lack of use!), get dinosaurs out of the way (!), and make learning fun for my kids (something I sometimes failed to do in the ordinary school year routine.)
Lots of luck to you as you continue through the summer! May it be one especially blessed by God!

LOL! No, no summer school here. We are all ready for a break! We usually start school back up fairly early, but I'm leaning towards not this year. We have a very small window of nice weather when it doesn't rain much (i.e. July & August) and I think we're going to enjoy that this year. But we shall see.
But I see why you'd want to. Under those circumstances, we'd do the same thing. It sounds like you have a good plan though!
Praying for your little guy and I thank you for your prayers!
Love, Alyssa

May. 31, 2007 - Good Morning

Hello. I noticed that comment over at JoAnn's this morning. I did not read it either, but quickly could see it was weird and LONG. Anyway, it sounds like you have a good plan and a good handle on what your boys need. We have a movie theater here like that and it is just down the road now. I will have to give it a go this year. Last year, my youngest was only 4 and I was not sure he'd last a whole movie. Now he is King Couch Potato, so I have no worries there. Well, except for the obvious ones now! Have a great day, Lynn!
Jenn
PS...we are going to the the summer reading program and our Bridge books this summer. That's all. I will not keep track either. That is my vacation. :-)

Yes, I got hit with that comment too. I already sent HSB the IP address.
We are doing light schooling this summer. Sarah has grammer and spelling, and Paulie has Phonics/reading and writing. That's about it. Then we'll go heavy again next year. I don't usually do school through the summer either. But this year we need too.

We're planning on continuing through the summer as well at a relaxed pace. No pressure just a little bit each day. I like to get ahead so that if I need to take some time off for anything later in the year we can without any worries : )
Blessings,

Jun. 1, 2007 - School in the summer

I think most everyone homeschools during the summer, just more relaxed. You take more trips, do more projects, read aloud more. You give yourself permission to enjoy teaching them what you enjoy instead of what they have to do. An if you would rather not have school one day, you don't.
That is what summer school looks like in most homes.

LOL! No, you are not the only one to make your kiddos do school through the summer. I do it too! (Mean Mommy's of the world unite!! LOL!) Anyway, we take time off at times through out the year, so we just carry on as usual all year around. If something good comes up to do then we stop and do it! We took 5 weeks in the states at Christmas, plus time off for France and other trips. I know these are educational in themselves, but it doesn't get the math covered! Besides, in England they only give the kids 6 weeks off and then they start back anyway. We may not get lots done this summer as we may be doing alot of respite care for fostering services while regular fosterers are on holiday.

It has been quite a few years since we did "summer school", just because I really like that big long break! When I *have* done homeschooling in the summer, it is very little and very relaxed. I am planning to do that this summer and will kick into our "summer schedule" next week. My plans are to do history (which also includes some language arts) 3 days/week, math & handwriting 1 day, and math & journal 1 day-- plus the kids will do piano practice, reading, & chores. HOPING I can do this and still get some summer projects done-- we'll see. If not, I may just condense all those things into 2 days/week. Plus, we'll have some long weekends off for birthdays & holidays, and some weeks off for camp & vacation.

We are homeschooling our DD over the summer as she went from 3rd to 4th grade this last year and is going to finish 4th grade this summer.
Stay focused and all will work out!
