Nature Studies
Wow! Spring is almost here!
Last week we already had a taste of spring (high 50′s, low 60′s) and now I just really want it to get here. I’m starting to see some buds on the trees and my mom had some crocuses coming up. I wanted to take a picture, but it was raining when I saw them.
This spring, were are going to start nature studies. I’ve gotten really lazy about this the last year, but we are going to get back to it! I’ve done some studying about nature studies and one report I was reading was saying that nature was almost as good as medicine for ADHD. Well, since both of my children have been diagnosed with ADHD, I figure we really should make nature studies more of a priority, even if it means scaling back some of their book work for a while.
Right now, I am in the process of putting nature journals together for the boys. I want to get them completed this week so they can start using them. Here is a resource for nature journals:
I think that nature journals are one of the best ways to study nature. It will be fun having the boys keep a yearly journal that we can look back on and see their progress through the years.
I also plan to buy each of them the book, My Nature Journal: A Personal Nature Guide for Young People to help them with their nature studies. I absolutely love this book! It gives a lot of guided nature studies activities to do and a place to record the findings.
Some other books that we are using are Handbook of Nature Study
Both of these books have excellent nature information in them and will help us with our nature studies.
I have put together a lot of nature resources on this page:
Some other pages that you can find resources for nature studies are:
Nature Study- The Backyard
Wild Tracks- Nature Study
Following the Coast- Nature Study
Animal Studies for Homeschoolers
Animal Studies for Kids
Nature Study- Robins
Nature Study- Hummingbirds
Nature Study- Cardinals
Plant Lapbook
Bee Lapbook
Weather Lapbook
Tree lapbook
Nature Coloring Pages
Bird Coloring Pages
Sunflowers
I hope some of these resources will help you with your homeschool nature studies. I plan to write more on nature studies as we get farther along. Please check back on our progress!
Check out my new blog entry to learn about nature notbooking pages that are on sale until spring! Here’s the link: Nature Notebooking Pages

Looks like a great list of resources. Thanks for sharing!
What great resources. We are finally getting into the habit of nature study this year! It has been so much fun for the kiddos.
Blessings,
Dawn
Good for you! Now that we are in our own place again, we will put out our feeders, grown some things and try to do more at parks. I am sure that being outside, getting exercise would be good for any child (and mom.) I need to make more of an effort, myself.
