Posted in Homeschool as usual

I like the idea of learning centers, but like so many other homeschoolers, I lack the room.  But even with a small space there are some things you can do.  This is a portable writing center I came up with for Little One.  He's on this writing kick and says he wants to be an author when he grows up. So who am I to hold him back??? lol!!!!
I used a mini cleaning organizer to put the stuff in.  Then I added some blank books I made for him.  All I did to make these were, I printed out primary lines about half down the paper and printed in landscape.  So basically it is blank at the top for a picture to be drawn and then there are lines to write on, on the bottom half.  After I printed this out on both sides, I folded the paper in half and stacked about three sheets together.  I then folded an piece of cardstock in half to use as a cover.  I used my swivel stapler and stapled down the spine to make a book.  Then I added some word cards to the center.  These I printed out a picture with the name of the picture under it.  I cut them down to card size and laminated them.  Now Little One has a good selection of words that he can spell on his own without having to ask me how to spell it.  Next I put pencils and colored pencils in the center to complete it.  Here are pictures of it.

School Day- Wednesday

Posted at 1:40 AM on Jun. 5, 2008

Posted in Homeschool as usual

We had a great day in school today.  Little one did a Capital letter to little letter matching activity which he got all correct, a flower word search, some math problems, I read a book about how plants grow and we did an experiment on growing plants.  With the plant experiment, I am having Little One keep lab sheets.  This is a first for him.  I took beginning pictures of the experiment (they aren't real exciting yet. lol!) and explained more about out experiment on my nature blog, Lynn's Nature Notes.  He didn't want to stop, but it was lunch time and I thought we covered quite a lot for the day.  I hope his enthusiasm last for at least another year.  It is sooooooo refreshing!   I am hoping to get Little One signed up for co-op next year.  I feel it's time to get back into some of our old activities.  I just hope not to over due it this time.
Tomorrow (Thursday) we are going to try to get an electrician out.  Our circuit breaker is acting flaky and it keeps tripping even though we are doing anything to trip it.  I hate that we are going to be out more money, but we have to have working lights, especially since both our shower and bath are affected.   Poor Hubby is going to have to shower by lantern light in the morning.

Wordless Wednesday- (Not So Wordless!)

Little One was so excited to start the 1st grade today.  This is the first year I have ever schooled through the summer, but since Little One loves school so much we are going to plow ahead.  I figure we don't have to school everyday and it will be just for a short time anyways.  I felt I needed a cut off day and a beginning so, June it was.  It was a logical choice since 1st grade will end next June and it was better to call him a 1st grader this summer than a kindergartener. lol!!! I made this little sign for him that was waiting on his little desk for him today and he was really happy with it.  He's just so proud of himself!!!

English Curriculum

Posted at 4:35 PM on Feb. 22, 2008

Posted in Homeschool as usual

I hate teaching English!!! I always find English curriculum extremely dry and boring.  I know it's a necessary evil, but that doesn't mean I have to like it!!!  I figured next year I would use the Scott Foreman program with Little One that is on the net for free, but I was stumped as to what to get Prince Caspian as he will be in the 7th grade and the Scott Foreman curriculum only goes up to 6th.  I knew I would be using my Story Starters book for writing with him, but I still wanted to cover some basic grammar with him.  My idea of a dream curriculum (which I never imagined in my wildest dreams thought I would find) is one that is interesting, the student can do most of the work themselves without a lot of adult intervention, one that does not have a lengthy teacher's manual that I have to follow and of course does not cost a lot of money.  Like I said I never expected to find it!!! Well, I may have...
I was looking through my new TOS magazine and there was an ad for a Language Arts curriculum that claimed to be Charlotte Mason style of learning and only cost $19.95.  So I went to their website, hoping they would have examples because I almost never buy anything sight unseen and I especially would not by a language arts curriculum that I know next to nothing about without seeing a sample.  Well, I was in luck, they did have a pdf sample of every level they offer.  I LOVED IT!!!!  Now, keep in mind I have not ordered this yet.  I have only seen the samples, but this is the first time I have EVER been excited about language arts.  Since it's new and many of you probably have never heard of it, I thought I would get the word out.  The program is called Language Lessons.  Here are some things that it includes:
Picture Study
Diction
Narration
Copywork
Grammar
Poetry Reading
Creative Writing
The lessons are real short and they look interesting.  I don't think it will be overwelming at all.  I saw an example of the picture studies and they especially looked fun.  In fact, I'm so excited over it, I plan to order it for both my children!  Here's the website:  www.queenhomeschool.com and look for Language Lessons.
